You could do this when changing out the wax melts in your warmers. It's already melted and ready to go, just dip cotton pads and make a few of these each time. Wonder how well this would work with dryer lint in a TP tube, since we already know that burns well. Maybe dip the ends of a lint-filled tube, so the dryer lint doesn't burn too fast. This way you're not buying cotton pads or anything to burn, you're using only items that would otherwise go in the trash. I think that's the worst part of these 5 Minute Craft videos - it seems like they are buying all the supplies for their videos instead of actually doing the 3Rs! 🤔

Btw these channels are aimed at kids, or at least kids watch them. My friend's young son used to watch 5 minute crafts and re-create the hacks at home. I have no idea if he was ever successful, as at least the fake baking hacks can convince people they're just lousy cooks, when in reality they were set to fail. @Kayenne54 3 года назад +5

@@maureenlaneski2802 Technically, you were "sheet composting". Like leaf fall is sheet composting. If your gardening habit continued, all you'd need to do to "cover up" the "compost pile" look was throw spoiled lucerne hay over the garden bed, about three inches thick. That's called "mulching". It breaks down, usually with some dolomite sprinkled all over it, and well watered in, and your plants usually love it. Helps stifle weeds, helps retain moisture in those climates that get very dry in summer, and encourages soil life and activity. Crushed egg shell does discourage slugs and snails though.

The candle wax and cotton pad works quite well. 👍
Edit: I don't drip the wax from the candle. I use an old small pot and melt wax in it, then dip 2/3 of the pad into the melted wax, set aside on aluminum foil and let cool.
When using, light the unwaxed part of the pad and hold it so the flame travels toward the waxed part, once the wax starts to burn place it into your kindling. It will burn for about 2 to 3 minutes.
***ALSO*** If you do this, use LOW heat to melt the wax in the pot as that it can and will catch on fire if it gets hot enough. I know this for a fact. 🔥😲

  • @marythayer787

For the candle wax and cotton pad idea, we used to make fire starters in Girl Scouts. Empty cardboard egg carton. Fill with dryer lint or sawdust. Melt some wax in an old pot. Pour the wax into the cups. Stand a match in each one. When you need one, break it off and put it in the wood, charcoal. Light the match. The paper, lint/sawdust burn, the wax burns hotter and longer, and voila! One fire started.

About the only useful 5min craft I know of is for sorting multiple wires. Useful behind your tv or something where they'll rarely move.
    1) take a zip tie and secure it in a large circle
    2) run wires thru the zip tie
    3) run a zip tie between each wire and seal it moderately tight. Should be perpendicular to the first zip tie and will go around it.
Can be repeated at a few different places along the length of the wires depending on how OCD you are. They will not tangle and will look fairly organized, but it is a pain in the butt if you ever want to move one.

I live in Wisconsin & we get a lot of snow & it can be a lot of work to clear snow when the snow keeps sticking to the shovel. It's harder on your back to have to keep knocking snow off your shovel every 10 seconds. The wax and candle thing does work. I make them with empty egg cartons, fill them with dryer lint and pour melted wax into each egg spot. That way, you can just rip them off and use them as fire starters. That's possibly the only 5 min craft thing I've ever seen that actually makes sense.

The lemon tree one is legit. A lot of people that grow their own fruits and vegetables use that method. The egg shell is a great holder that creates 0 waste and then can be used as fertilizer.

Candle wax on shovel actually takes like 15 seconds and does work. Back in old days people put candle wax on (bottom of) their skis too. Also poorly sliding drawers, squeaky hinges etc. Cheap & works.

Lol, yes. Candle wax isn't a good fire starter. If it were, more than the wick would burn. All it does is extend the burn time if the wick, or in this video, the cotton pad.

  • @digifreak90

Yeah, there are three questions you should ask to determine if something is a "hack".
    1. Does it save money?
    2. Does it save time?
    3. Does it save effort?
If the answers to all three of these questions are all "no" then it's not a hack. (there is some wiggle room if not all of the answers are no. I.E. it could still be considered a hack if it saves time and money at the cost of a little more effort)
Also for the grapes, you could also just clean the grapes while they're still on the stem.

The best kindling for camping is to save empty toilet paper and paper towel rolls and egg cartons! I also save papers like free newspapers to use. Instead of melting the wax, you can dip your cotton pads, or better yet the jumbo cotton balls, in Vaseline. Works just as well, is easier, and probably less messy.
A camping hack I like is to reuse coffee creamer bottles. You can crack your eggs in there, then pour them out as needed and don't have to worry about eggs cracking in the cooler making a mess. You can also measure your pancake mix into them, then when ready to cook add the wet ingredients, shake and pour. Pinterest has a lot of great camping hacks for anyone interested.

Cotton make up pads have been used by wilderness hikers/campers for years. Even if they get a bit damp, they light easily, because the wax not only keeps the inner cotton dry, but turns the cotton in to a wick for the flame to last longer, so if you must use damp kindling, you stand a better chance of getting it on fire. Note damp and wet are a spectrum. do not throw your kindling in the water and immediately try to light it like that.
