I hear you buddy, it's just not natural. But I'm sure the Ukrainians are motivated because of the future they envision. The Russians on the other hand are between a rock and a hard place. Most Russians probably don't know how they got there and they're copping as best as they can. I don't blame the soldiers, I blame the political leaders on both sides. By political leaders I mean Putin and his cronies and NATO. NATO has the means to end this cluster, by providing the equipment. It's my belief that NATO is deliberately trickling in equipment, just enough so that neither side can win decisevely.
I know I wouldn't be able to do it as I currently am, but then I suppose that's what training is for - making you confident and capable, and able to deal with the insane stresses of that kind of situation better than you otherwise might.

Trench warfare has its limits but if it is infantry against other infantry elements its whoever it caught off guard first dies. The element of surprise is your friend as well as fire superiority and grenades.

Novel weapons or tactics usually don't have a long life. Once the opposition become aware of what is going on, countermeasures are taken and the weapon/tactic can be combatted. I suspect they were all shot down.
Glad you mentioned ptsd, post traumatic stress disorder, at the end. It has been a significant casualty for troops after the battle is over. Hopefully, it is not as significant for heroes defending their homes, but undoubtedly a concern for Ukraine’s recovery, though that’s a battle for another day.
What one needs to understand is that none of the trench warfare seen up until now has been in the prepared lines - this is just the regular field fortificstions that dot every front line.

So far I've seen 1 video clip of cluster munition DPCIM (Supplied by the US) being used in the war so far, hope to see more of it and how it effects the battle situation for the Russians and how the Ukrainians will be using it for more effectiveness.
As we see now, it does not affect Russians too much. We knew that beforehand though. The reason Ukraine was giving clustermunitions was to make up for shortages in 155mm HE type of rounds. The west simply couldn't deliver as much as Ukraine needs, hereby adding clustermunitions to the stockpile. Cluster-Bombs are certainly better than nothing at all and hearing 60 little explosions in very short succession all around you is most likely terrifying. Well, until they get used to them an the little effect they have on troops hiding in trenches.
The fact that in 2023 we're back to using proper full scale trench warfare is wild to me. Tanks, AFVs, and IFVs meant to easily storm trenches are no longer viable due to things like AT missiles and easily deployable mines, and now warfare is back to brutal meatgrinders a la WWI.
It shouldn't shock you. War has always gone back and forth between the defensive bias and offensive bias, now we can clearly see the defensive bias is back after Monash and Currie's set-piece battle and combined arms development in WW1

2:10 cluster munitions are really bad for trench warfare, because any kind of overhead cover will most likely stop fragmentation and even shaped charges. unless you catch troops in the open, eg with the first rounds splashing down, HE rounds are far more effective. once the troops had time to take cover, cluster isn't going to do much (except maybe make storming the trench that much harder because of duds)

It's claimed that the New Zealand Maori were first to use trench warfare, as they used it when the British arrived and was one of the reason a treaty was signed, because neither side was winning. Normally the Brits cleaned up in battle, but not facing the Maori in trenches, Apparently the Maori used trenches in warfare against each other hundreds of years prior to the Brits arriving in NZ. I was taught this in school 40 years ago, (It might not be correct of course. Maybe someone else will know?)
I don't know why Ukraine did not strengthen their border before the Invasion. I mean after the annexation of crimia, they should have strengthen their border with static defense systems such as trench network systems, minefields, anti-tank ditch/traps, barbedwires, and etc. Then those trenches are manned by territorial defense forces. Plus complimented by artilleries, mechanize units, air support.
A mined and trenched field isn't able to be farmed and most of Ukranian land is farm land. Also I don't think trenches really work if their not actively lived in. Over time a trench deteriorates and is pretty useless unless it's maintained.

Every Nation/Country has its own border guards, but Ukraine has its own border guards and territorial defense forces which can be utilized to man, manage, and repair those static defense systems such as trenches, etc. 3. When it comes to maintenance, shovels are maybe enough to maintain those trench networks.
Ukraine was in limited supplies of many military gear and equipment due to a 1991 agreement they turn over all their nukes and reduce their military once Ukraine voted independence. With promises of American and Russian protection.

The main problem isn't trenches. It's minefileds, artillery and, of course, aircrafts. Also mosscovits bought 30 times more drones from china that Ukraine.
Veteran's "psychological" problems may miss physiological issues: Aerobic exercise, diet/microbiome and healthy sleep solve most "psychological" problems and the cheapest sleeping medicine is low dose sleepy cannabis, possibly hours before bedtime and proper sleep hygiene. Microbiome can be fixed by traditional fermented food. Respecting trenches, high tech, 24/7 surveillance, multi spectra, should be available and integrated, and assault troops should approach Milrem and Allies research and development including robotics for the best equipment. Your friends at Canada's Draganfly can put it all together, including anything you dream up. Ditto the Scandinavians. USA tends to make things more complicated than necessary. They love gadgets that aren't always necessary.
I don’t think they are allowed under the Geneva convention. Once they are introduced on the battlefield then they are available to both sides. No one want to die like that.

We knew that beforehand though. The reason Ukraine was giving clustermunitions was to make up for shortages in 155mm HE type of rounds. The west simply couldn't deliver as much as Ukraine needs, hereby adding clustermunitions to the stockpile. Cluster-Bombs are certainly better than nothing at all and hearing 60 little explosions in very short succession all around you is most likely terrifying. Well, until they get used to them an the little effect they have on troops hiding in trenches.

The fact that in 2023 we're back to using proper full scale trench warfare is wild to me. Tanks, AFVs, and IFVs meant to easily storm trenches are no longer viable due to things like AT missiles and easily deployable mines, and now warfare is back to brutal meatgrinders a la WWI.
It shouldn't shock you. War has always gone back and forth between the defensive bias and offensive bias, now we can clearly see the defensive bias is back after Monash and Currie's set-piece battle and combined arms development in WW1

cluster munitions are really bad for trench warfare, because any kind of overhead cover will most likely stop fragmentation and even shaped charges. unless you catch troops in the open, eg with the first rounds splashing down, HE rounds are far more effective. once the troops had time to take cover, cluster isn't going to do much (except maybe make storming the trench that much harder because of duds)
Unfortunately, Ukraine has limited resources, so they are having to use these things - the clear up afterwards doesn't bear thinking about.

I'm not even considering the longterm threat of duds an issue, considering how much cluster munition has been fired by the russians already, which in turn is nothing compared to the mines laid all over the place...

If air superiority was established I’m sure they wouldn’t need cluster munitions. I’m no expert but I think that cluster bombs will help in the short term but eventually air superiority will have to be established. Slave Ukraine.

Historical Nit: Trench warfare dates back at least to the 16th century. After the Battle of Bunker Hill (June 17, 1775), one of the British generals (William Howe?) famously said, "Never give the Americans a chance to dig in!"

It’s not practical, shields are heavy and clunky, even more so for shields rated for rifle rounds.
Meaning that a man with a shield is a sitting duck.

It's claimed that the New Zealand Maori were first to use trench warfare, as they used it when the British arrived and was one of the reason a treaty was signed, because neither side was winning. Normally the Brits cleaned up in battle, but not facing the Maori in trenches, Apparently the Maori used trenches in warfare against each other hundreds of years prior to the Brits arriving in NZ. I was taught this in school 40 years ago, (It might not be correct of course. Maybe someone else will know?)
I don't know why Ukraine did not strengthen their border before the Invasion. I mean after the annexation of crimia, they should have strengthen their border with static defense systems such as trench network systems, minefields, anti-tank ditch/traps, barbedwires, and etc. Then those trenches are manned by territorial defense forces. Plus complimented by artilleries, mechanize units, air support.
A mined and trenched field isn't able to be farmed and most of Ukranian land is farm land. Also I don't think trenches really work if their not actively lived in. Over time a trench deteriorates and is pretty useless unless it's maintained.

1. I rather turned a 1 km deep of land area(within or close to the border) into a static defense systems rather than losing vast territories just like what happen to Ukraine.
2. Every Nation/Country has its own border guards, but Ukraine has its own border guards and territorial defense forces which can be utilized to man, manage, and repair those static defense systems such as trenches, etc.
3. When it comes to maintenance, shovels are maybe enough to maintain those trench networks.
Ukraine was in limited supplies of many military gear and equipment due to a 1991 agreement they turn over all their nukes and reduce their military once Ukraine voted independence.
With promises of American and Russian protection.

Here's something that can help Ukrainians in clearing the Orc Trenches, "Thermite Grenades" it is Not Banned Internationally and can only be used where there is Only military personnel i.e. a Soldier, if Thermite Grenades are used against Unarmed Civilians, the act will be looked upon as a War Crime.

Why don't they use teargas and/or smoke to storm these trenches with their deep underground paths? Either by drone or individual troops. It would show where all the other entrances are at and clear out any enemy troops.
