John Madden had the very unique ability to leave most every job he ever had when he was on top. He was never forced out of anything. His head coaching career lasted 10 years with the Raiders, when he retired from coaching at the age of 42. He won the AFC West 7 times and came in second the other 3 times. Can you imagine any coach in today's NFL stepping down at that age after winning so much? He also stepped away from his NFL broadcasting job at the top. Could have easily worked another 5 to 7 years, but had the good sense to spend his remaining years enjoying his friends and family.
Watched him as a coach, loved him as an analyst, played the video games, Madden has been there throughout my entire football life. Rest in peace coach your legacy lives on.
I’m an Aussie. I started watching NFL in the 90s. It was John Madden’s description of plays that taught me the game. I thank him for that. May he Rest In Peace.
I'm another Aussie. I went to college in America on a sports scholarship. I had been watching the NFL in Oz before hand but never really understood the actual tactics of plays. When I got to the states I realized I knew even less than I thought I did. It was watching JM that fixed that. I went to college at U. Illinois which meant all my friends were Bears fans. It was almost sacred that every Sunday we'd watch the Bears and which ever game Madden was commentating. John M at that time had become one of the first broadcasters to use a light pen (telestrator) to draw lines on the screen. He might not have been the first but he was the most prominent user at the time. I still remember him drawing lines all over the screen and then watching players follow them on replays. It was extraordinary that he could watch a play in real time and remember where all 22 players went and what they did. I can remember some of my mates being amazed at that and some of them had played football all through to the end of high school. When I got back to Australia (Early 88) they were just starting to use the light pen in cricket. So JM even affected how we commentated on cricket. Its hard to describe what he did for sports commentating and sports analysis.
