Mountain and Snow camping in the Hennessy Hammock

- I threw together a quick overnight trip up in to the Olympic Mountains. With me I had my trusty Hennessy Ultralite Explorer Asym zip hammock.
Unfortunately after a late start, knee high snow on a 45 degree slope and no snow shoes I was not able to make the designated evening camp. Fortunately the steep mountain slope I was on happened to have a crap load of trees... hammocks like trees.
I think it is safe to say that at this point the Hennessy is my go to sleep system for most of my adventures... providing there are trees.
Thanks for the adventure, loved the views and hammock set up
Great video amazing footage - sitting here in sunny hot Brisbane Qld Australia scorching 36 deg C day wishing we had that snow. Stunning place - loved the camp!!
+Christine Schlieff Glad you enjoyed the video!
Just found you on the you tube. Have the Hennesey Asym Expedition for summer and an ENO with down under/top quilts for winter. Don't know why I was a ground dweller for so many years. Awesome video. Thanks for sharing.
Greg
+Greg Stritch Thanks Greg... happy hang'n.
Love seeing different hammock setups. Winter camping sure looks fun. Except that you could die. But at least all the critters are in a deep sleep. At least the ones that could eat you. Lol! We live between Lake Tahoe and Yosemite. Like you, we are so blessed to live in or near paradise. Great filming!
+gliderrider Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. Good thermal gear is critical... without it hammocks and snow covered mountains can quickly become an ugly pairing. Stay safe.
hi gliderrider, know your territory, my kid and her family are in arnold. they are big campers
I had an HH ul explorer in 2004. It was my first “real” camping hammock and loved it. Good video.
Absolutely beautiful and amazing ❤️❤️!!
Thanks for sharing. loved watching it. A little escape from flatland ;-)
You talked about food seemingly being a theme in your videos. . .love it. I found when I winter camp, food must be easy to make, nutritious and filling, those criteria met and life is good! Thank you for sharing with us. Bibsoutdoors
Looking real good!! Don't worry about the water!! Looked as pure as the fallen rain!!!!
Micro organisms are invisible to the naked eye, hundred yards upstream could be a rotting carcass :(,be safe.
Good video! I love camping on steep ridges with my ultralight backpacker. Best way to camp away from everyone else
I have the same hammock and setting the head end about 8" to 12" (20-30cm) helps keep you from sliding down while sleeping. The heaviest part of your body (head/torso) wants to slide down to the middle (lowest point). Setting the head side lower, you move the lowest point of the hammock to where you torso is. I know it sounds counterintuitive, but give it a try. I think you'll be surprised.
fun adventure. many who are not around mountains dont understand how many dangers there really are. i am sure you do know. or you would not be out there. well it was a fun adventure. you said washington i think. i live on mt hood in oregon. i love the mountains and the adventure life. hello from mt hood oregon. my name is jason. keep having fun and stay safe. i make adventure videos also. peace.
That hammock looks like a good one!
that long walk toward the camera made me subscribe lol dedication to a good video
Wоnderful places to backpacking!
Great adventure , Thanks
Awesome hammock!!
This is awesome, BAM ! I hit the bell
LOVE this stuff!!"!!
Good of you for getting out there in those conditions! Try hanging the foot end of your hammock a bit higher than the head and you won't slide down at all and yet still feel level. Of course hanging after dark makes everything trickier. Another thing you may want to try is using a wind screen around your stove. You'll be amazed at how much more heat gets to your pot instead of being blown away. Even a slight draft will rob heat away. Lots of fun even though it's lots of work. Good job.
+wkf57 Thanks for your comment and the tips. Happy hang'n!
Great!! thank you for sharing!
Glad you you enjoyed it.
Starting to get dark!! A nice fire-and all is good!!!
Piece of aluminum foil makes for a great lid , also useful as a wind barrier for your stove. It's also super lightweight. Cheers from Alberta, Canada.
looks like a great time... beauty spot.
I also use a thermarest when it's sub tropical out. it definitely make a big difference, but I find that I wake up with cold shoulders because they are so narrow. would be cool if they designed one specifically for us off season hammock guys... something with a wider top area....maybe like wings that could still form to the shape of the hammock while protecting more of your body. would probably help to keep it under you as well.
My Marmot down jacket never lets me down but I agree, small 6" wings would around the shoulder area may be a good idea.
Them making that cooking cup black would also help
Fantastic videos man. I just discovered your channel - awesome!!!!! Funny 420 pause. Come visit Marble in Colorado. Sjvista
once you go to a underquilt you will never go back, but the same thing can be said about hammocks in general. I threw my mattress away 2 years ago and went full time sleeping in my hammock
awsome, i have the bg canteen and cup, plus an us army one as well w/ a sterling cup with it, that sterno, i dont like, i just use the foldable stove and take some kindling w/ me and use small limbs and feed it cooks awesome. like your video.
+brave wolf I am with you on the Sterno, that was a first and a last.
+Off Grid Warrior You are awesome! Beside wood what else has been a reliable way for you to heat food inn the snow?
0320: Have to pee -------------LOL.Good video.
awesome
Beautiful place! And brave of you to camp in that snow! How cold did it get? Take care xxx
Where in the Olympics is this we just camped by Crescent Lake at Fair holm campground last month.
Sadsquah markings!!
Fantastic video!!!
I own a Hennessy Hammock. How well did the solar blanket work, draped over the hammock? How did you attach it to the hammock? I'm guessing just about anything would help under the small asym fly!
Thanks Brian. Emergency blanket worked pretty well, the only downside is condensation will collect on the underside of blanket resulting in a few drops of water here and there. Blanket was just draped over the ridge of hammock and I tied the corners of the blanket together so it would not fly away if the wind picked up.
Thanks for taking us along. Brilliant idea with the emergency blanket. Glad it didn't condense too much. Agree with pitching/sleeping with your head at the lower end of the hammock: you won't slide. There are insulating wing things available, I think from ENO: HotSpot Hammock Sleeping Pad. Holds your pad and has the wings. Or see ShugEmery's fairly new video on pads in hammocks. On the other hand, "Friends don't let friends sleep in hammocks with pads instead of underquilts." I couldn't really tell, did you have a sleeping bag inside or just your triple layers of clothing? Just found your channel and subscribed. Looking forward to more videos. Best of luck and fun.
+Christopher McKellar Thanks Christoper. the less I have to stuff in my backpack the better... I was in a Marmot -20 degree sleeping bag.
I noticed your tarp/hammock was right beside a widowmaker
nice little blacktail deer. very cool terrain. do you have a under quilt on your hammock? i am building up my equipment for backpacking.
No under quilt. I am not apposed to one but I have to say my Thermarest Prolite is doing a fine job in cold weather... mid 20's is the lowest I've experienced with no problems.
+Off Grid Warrior opposed
Off Grid Warrior is it the stock hennessy or do you have the super shelter slung under it?
world deece I've had mine for about 4 years now and love it.
good morning! Im in western Wa and we would like to camp/ hike in the Olympics. On that side of Puget Sound we have only camped at hurricane ridge but would like to try other spots. where about was this hike at? Thank you for the videos! keep them coming!
Two nice trails can be accessed at the Hurricane Ridge National Parks gate they are Heather Park and Lake Angeles both trails start at the same parking area, this video was shot just short of Heather Park. I would definitely also recommend taking a look at the Hoh River trail near Forks WA.
would it not be cool to make your own snow shoes right in the woods?
Love your videos. Can I ask what you use for a camera?
Oh lovely snow there, me and my family are thinking to climb mount snowdon soon, what are your opinions on this? I was wondering if I can possibly get a shoutout? Loving the content keep it up ❤️
Seem like you were about to let loose on a 420 joke after saying "flying high, we're in washington state"
I was...
hahah top lad
is this the hennessy expedition?
frogg toggs great products light weight.
What snow boots are you using?
HAM-AHH-K
So I don't even know where in the world you are... but, do you have something you carry for protection from predators? or are there any where you are? Pepper spray? big ol' knife? small handgun? air can screamer?
I won't hammock camp in the winter till I spend my hard earned $300 on a zero degree underblanket.
+Bobby Harper Good idea, freezing the family jewels whilst hanging from trees is never fun.
I’ve just bought 2 sheepskins wondering how that will fair. Heading out to Galloway forest in Scotland in a couple of weeks with a friend so will see
Are you South African?
exRhodie yep , so am I
i liked your video but you say 'erm' far too much
