  • We're back at the Tropicana in Atlantic City, New Jersey but this week... we're going to Boogie Nights. A night club truly dedicated to throwbacks but more specifically DISCO. I rode up with nick because he was playing at The Royce (also located in Tropicana) so we also got some insight into that place and how his set went.

I honestly think that genre at Boogie Nights attracts a specific customer who is not really into the more technical skills of a DJ, it’s all about the music, and I know for myself I get frustrated with DJ’s who quick mix too much in that scenario. Don’t get me wrong don’t long mix it but don’t chop them too short either . Great video Santi

Boogie nights is a dream gig for me. Love those 70's and 80's vibes. I'm hoping this journey doesn't allow DJ ego to take over your brain man, I think this DJ did great. These type of nights are for a specific customer who aren't really interested in clever mixes or technical DJ ideas. Most of the audience want that pure hit of nostalgia. DJ'ing from my perspective is always about understanding the room and delivering a great experience based on what the room is telling you. I don't think he did the bare minimum, I think he knew the assignment.

That was a great room and played properly. Given the theme, I would have also stayed away from Mashups and getting "too creative", not the room for it. These songs are very deep classics-attached to a large amount of nostalgia- you dont want to mess with that. The vibe was that of a large-scale wedding. Great energy, good vid.

Yeah, Gabor and the owner, Dave, literally invented the concept and format together over a decade ago. The place does more business now than it did in 2019 before the pandemic. The secret is sticking to the format and not playing remixes etc… Otherwise, you become polyester’s in Philly which shutdown once the format diverted. Gabor definitely gets creative but don’t get too hung up on wordplays 😂 Seriously, go back watch some wordplay videos more closely. Yeah, there’s always one or two people that are into it but most of the people in the background are like wtf is this guy doing 😂

I’d love to play a room like this. Got to play a similar room about a month ago (strictly 80s and 90s) and it was a blast. Everyone knew what to expect and pulling out the deep cuts from those eras got HUGE reactions.

🎉 - I'd love to play a spot like this but you have to wonder how much freedom the DJ there has. If you have a Disco crowd in AC, you can play less mainstream classics like "Mandolay" - La Flavour, "This Time Baby" - Jackie Moore or "I like what you're Doing to Me" - Young & Company but this DJ was either bound only to the songs he has videos for or sticks to the most popular songs from the era.

I agree! I could def play this room no problem…but i’d want to dig beyond the “hits” and play “real” disco and funk…rather than the “pop” disco and mainstream 80’s. Totally possible with the right a NY/NJ crowd.

I agree with you! I would love to play that spot, crazy how the DJ had 2 whole decades that people willingly are on the dance floor for, but only plays the hits. A little too on the safe side. I would’ve totally loved to hear some new tracks from that era that may be slept on 🕺🏽

I love wordplays, crazy transitions, and mashes...but they're color, little flavorings added on top of solid song selection. The real question is "would they have noticeably elevated the experience of those on the floor?" Because that's what truly matters.
I love our art, but I also don't assume it's always the best choice. Sometimes a McChicken hits the spot better than wagyu.

Agreed. The more I play and the older I get. I’m 36 playing at a pretty packed college bar for 5+ years I notice that setting the proper vibe and playing the right music at the right time is more important than how you cut or what wordplays you can do. (And I like to cut it up lol) Sprinkle them in but don’t rely on wordplay routines because then you as a dj are just doing the same thing night after night. The bar staff shouldn’t be able to guess what song is coming up next. Great videos. But why are they getting shorter lol?

I think when it comes to having a full club/bar hiring mostly local DJs, it's more about the consistency of the vibe than the DJ promoting. If there is a different DJ there every week it's hard to set a tone, especially if it's open format. If it's a dead night I wouldn't take it personally, the venue has to do a better job of bringing in clients and all you should have to worry about is keeping them there.

I don’t think that’s the crowd for word play or special mix or edits - look like they go into original songs themselves as little edit as possible to get that feel of how the song was made on that era … he didn’t need to do word play etc but he had some solid transition and he even transform/ and cut without being to technical … this is a dope format and can take it so many genre - complete wormhole where you wanna bring the crowd

Great journey indeed, thanks. And yes, I would love to do a 70/80s gig. I would especially love to do with just a pair of 1200s, vinyl and a rotary mixer. I agree with your assessment of the night. It’s pretty easy to take the standard 70 and 80s hits and play them. To tell a story and take the crowd on a real musical journey is the key. Someday I’ll get the guts to create a video on how we did mobile gigs during that time. Thanks for the great content.

I would love to play in this room as well. I think the boogie nights theme let's the crowd know what to expect. You, as the dj know what to play makes the dj gig easier without word plays or crazy scratching. From what I can see people where having a great time.

On one hand, it definitely seems wrong that a highly skilled DJ like Nick is playing for 37 people while another DJ who’s not on that level (neither am I, or most DJ’s for that matter) gets to rock a packed room. On the other hand, I remember going to Boogie Nights a few years ago on a Saturday in peak season, and it being almost dead. They’ve definitely put work into building it. The DJ biz is such a weird animal man.

The soul draining part about most, but not all of these, is the people don’t digest anything that isn’t on the standard playlist very well. Generally the crowds, probably rightfully so, want to hear the absolute anthems.
It’s almost like the water-park of the dj realm.
    But they are fun.

Boogie Nights attracts an older crowd. Gen X and Boomers. They’re not huge fans of remixes, quick mixes, and scratching. They just want to hear the classics. They need at least two verses and two choruses. Then beat match out.

The DJ did his job and there was no need for tricks, word plays or any of that shit. People came, people had fun, people went home and fucked or went to bed. Job done. It's a good format idea, but I'd have to be paid a lot to play that room. If you can't dip below the primary hits, the throwback format gets wearying.
Being old as hell myself, I play a lot of '80s nights, and if the room is nothing but kids, you lose them if you play anything besides a A-list hit that gets (over)used in commercials, TV shows and movies. If it's more mixed, you can open up a little into the B- and C-level singles.
Also, that MC would get taken out to the Pine Barrens.

6:20 There's nothing to learn with Video DJing ... you're just dropping an MP4 (or MOV/AVI etc) onto the decks as opposed to an MP3. I don't even worry about the video clip as the software deals with all of that ... as long as your computer is setup correctly, I DJ as if I'm playing an audio file.
