Squatters Are Taking Over Las Vegas’ Abandoned Houses (HBO)

"I would just eat out of the trash, sleep on the ground," a squatter named Dawn Louden told VICE News correspondent Michael Moynihan about life before squatting. "You do what you have to do to survive."
Las Vegas was hit harder by the 2007 economic downturn than most cities, and evicting squatters from previously foreclosed houses has become a priority for the Las Vegas Metro Police. "What we've typically seen is a direct correlation to a squatter house being the nucleus of crime for that neighborhood," Lt. Nick Farese said. "You just really never know what's going to be on the other side of the door."

Theft of property on the other hand, especially for facilitation of crime is a whole nother animal and needs to be dealt with.
Hell i can see being stuck in a rut a s wnding up homeless from some bad circumstances but you find a free place to squat FREE and they said lights n water worked shower clean up and get a job stack up so when you do get evicted you can just go rent a place

You know the system doesn't work when we have more empty houses than homeless people.
1 in 7 American houses are empty.
1 in 402 Americans are homeless.
24 empty houses are available for each homeless American.
Cucks for Trump well most homeless choose to be or have poor choice making that force them to be shit even if homes where dirt cheap we would still see a lot of homeless people as most folk no matter what live beyond their means:/

Lots of people that live in the desert go somewhere less oppressively hot during the summer. Some of my family lives all year in a desert and during summer 75% of their neighborhood is gone for many months. It seems ridiculous that after one month if someone sneaks into your house you can't kick them out.

My neighborhood had to deal with some squatters for a couple of years until the state finally revised the laws and not only kicked them out, but managed to connect them to a drug ring that stretched from East Vegas to Henderson. Needless to say, I was more than happy to provide evidence of their mule-work to investigators. Now a nice Mexican family lives there :)
Yes a caring society that's America,as long as you have money everything's ok, if not go live on the streets
They don't want you on the streets either from what I understand...nor do they want you to eat by refusing to allow some kind soul to feed the homeless. America has really went back in time. Meanwhile, the riches of Vegas are worrying about champagne corks damaging their Basquiat on their yachts.
Can you imagine if these so-called rich and famous lost everything. Man, they would fall apart trying to figure what to do next and then they cry. The squatters and homeless know how to survive and they are forced to and that is the advantage they have.
Damn you guys really envy them
What does this have to do with rich people? It's this way of not thinking that keeps you inline with a 5 year old. There's no yachts in Vegas, it's a desert.

Squatting is illegal... I get that.
I have also been homeless. Now, I never squatted, BUT...a few times I took refuge in backyards of vacant homes, garages, carports, etc. to get a relatively safe night of sleep. But before dawn, I would clean myself up the best I could and take leave before neighbors could see me.
I wish eventually discovered by a homeowner who, to his credit and my lifelong gratitude, took notice that I had cleaned up the area.
(Plus, I had served as an 'accidental theft deterrent and druggie squatter repellent!) And offered me a job as an assistant property manager for his several holdings, and got me off the street!

I have lived in Vegas for nearly 9 years and have seen some crazy shit. When the housing market crashed I was cleaning up to 5-6 houses a day, sometimes past midnight. People poured cement in the toilets, threw appliances in pools, urinated all over the floors, locked their pets in the home to starve to death, etc. We eventually had a flood of foreign investors buy up many of the houses that were finally up for sale (there is still alot of homes but they are held back by the banks so we don't crash again)
Now things are a little more calm but its hard for a local person/family who is looking for a house here because they get in a bidding war with someone who will just sit on the property till the value rises. Not that its a horrible thing to do but because the houses are empty squatters move in. I may come across a squatted house once every two months or so but squatters don't give a fuck. The houses are always gutted for anything valuable, everything has to be replaced, trash everywhere, etc. Our crime rates are also really high too and it is party because of squatters but not most of it.
Sometimes the local news will show what police will uncover and its pretty horrible. Stolen laptops, multiple stolen wallets and purses, other peoples mail, deplorable conditions, etc. I have ZERO empathy for squatters! As shown in the video with the woman with the apple laptop and expensive purse, she could of by passed those items and got a cheap flat for 500 a month easy and or split the cost with a roomate. We also have many womens & childrens shelters around town that will give temporary housing if you are willing to stay off drugs and they also help with job assistance. I donate to the one next to me when I can. Its rough here but if you are willing to get your hands dirty and work odd hours you will do just fine here, its a 24 hour town, lots of opportunities to take.

Whenever you see someone in need of help, you immediately tell your self (and anyone who will listen) they it is their fault they are the way they are.
Here is a newsflash for you buddy, just because you have a job, doesn't mean you have house. While you try and rap your head around that paradox, try to wrap your head around the affordable housing crisis currently sweeping across the nation thanks to Landowners taking part time jobs in the government.

@Maui Caui right on bro
@@mikeshogunlee excellent.. thx
The one thing I hate about squatters is the total disregard for the place they are illegally occupying. Writing on walls, breaking stuff, the noise and the criminal activity amongst other things. It's bad enough that you're squatting.
Please give us back Mr. Decote we truly enjoyed him very much .Thank You.
no your saying go out and live on the streets. majority of swatters don't own a car
These capitalists don't give a shit about the poor and working class, it doesn't "break their heart". Squatting is not bad for the economy on the whole, it's only bad for the ultra wealthy capitalists who want to hard abundant resources in order to get richer.
what a moron. squatters do nothing for the economy. they are viruses. they leach.
Pretty nice car at least lol! The one at the very end with the dog sticking out.
I've actually done this a few times here in Calgary but it becomes dangerously cold in Calgary😤
lol here last name seaman
Vegas will never come back. Lake Mead drying up.
Like really u cant find a job? Your to good to work at a grocery store, casino retail fast food restaurant or airport
What about rents being high? dude. This is something that the Fox News channels on YT like Tucker Carlson have tried to hang on the Dems ( Clinton & Obama ) like in CA especially San Diego, LA, and SF ) the fact is America has a really bad NATIONWIDE HOMELESS PROBLEM ESPECIALLY IN THE WEST PROBABLY BECAUSE OF THE MILDER WINTERS THERE AS OPPOSED TO COLDER PARTS OF THE COUNTRY. BUT THIS IS LV WHICH HAS BEEN A GOP STRONGHOLD CITY FOREVER.........
BTW San Diego is a GOP stronghold ( high taxes, high COL.....why wouldn't it's at the beach..LOL!!! also 100 mi up the coast you have Orange Co which now also has a major homeless problem ( GOP stronghold too ). how many people in america can afford to buy a house anymore ( $200K-$1M ) even with two income earner families?
First of all you can't get a job without a place to shower and interview worthy clothing. If you are homeless you won't have that. Secondly, in Vegas you need to pay for a food handling card and sheriff card to get jobs there. How can a homeless person do this?
@@Melodylynn69 so for bagging groceries and shit like working at a cvs or walgreens. Use a fake adress jobs dont mail you shit. You gotta face it people been like that for a while dont want to change sometimes they enjoy there free time. No disrespect but they need to go somewhere besides making them a burde
We r going into another recession, all across the US, Expect more situations like this, and more homelessness. The rents keep going up.How r regular tax payers going to survive?
We're not😟
The recession is coming back because of runaway inflation. Have you seen the food prices lately? And the prices of everything is going up, except wages, that is why we need to tax the rich at 90%.
You called it
We are inna recession
Free Rent, I'm coming Las Vegas!!
Spee Spa lol
With ALL these homeless and the thugs in Congress want open borders, they must really be paid well to help overthrow our government, what they don't understand that once the borders open there will be no need for them, we won't need Congress anymore , just street gangsters prowling the streets killing whoever, there Will be no one to arrest them or courts to try them.
Don't forget to tell all of your friends. And tell the homeless in LA & SFO.
Did that squatter put a laptop into a Michael Kors bag?
Zebra Lady75. I covered handbags a few times when I worked at Macy's on 2012. His stuff was trendy, but not at a prestige price point. It seems his highest priced bags were around $150 but many were under $100
They're the home owners, weren't u listening?
Wow! This is really good!! VICE News knows.
That Indecline bill board at the end 🤘🏼

"we feel bad for them, but not bad enough to do something other than force them to live on the streets so the houses can sit empty"

I’ve lived in Vegas for so many years, and can say that Las Vegas is a messed up city. Serious homeless problems 😐
Here is the SCOOP all Corp Media did NOT want to report.
Top BoA corp officer Candice JONES said, "All these loans are fraudulent" and
she said it exclusively on MY TV show.

While living in Vegas we had a squatter move in next door and they set the place on fire, almost burned down our house. For weeks the neighborhood tried to get them out but the cops did nothing. This was just last year so I do not know how much has really changed since these "new laws" went into effect. I never took a chance when I left town, and had someone stay at my house or at least stop by every other day to feed my cats and check on the place, still I was always worried we would come back to squatters given how rampant the problem was. This was in a nice area too, Summerlin to be exact up neat Palo Verde HS.
Wow! It's amazing that someone would be so bold to do this.
Lots of empty houses, wonder why?
I mean who wouldn't like to live in the middle of the desert.
Why should they be empty? Let's figure out some kind of arrangement- it doesn't have to be so difficult.
Why not?
Squatters can be a major nuisance especially when there's laws to protect them. I feel for them but they should leave when asked to
i know right all those homes should be given to muslims.
Mister Mood fuck off troll
Erock Stoenescu ;^)
