Big shout out to those who played along with myself and Marc in the video: Jamie Humphries (Brian May, Queen Extravaganza), Tony Franklin (Roy Harper, The Firm, Jimmy Page), Pete Riley (Republica), and Steve Maggiora (TOTO, Robert Jon & The Wreck)
Marc Martel is a Canadian Christian rock musician. He was born in Montreal, Canada, to father Michel Martel and mother Barbara Beresford Martel. He attended Briercrest College and Seminary in Caronport, Saskatchewan, where he formed the band Downhere with his roommate Jason Germain and a few friends in 1999.
Aside from his own work, Martel is known for his Queen covers, and his vocal likeness to Freddie Mercury.
In September 2011, Martel entered a competition to join Roger Taylor's (original drummer for the rock band Queen) official Queen tribute project, the Queen Extravaganza, with a video of Martel singing along with the Queen classic "Somebody to Love". It generated more than one million views on RUclips after being up for only a few days and as of February 2021 it has over 22 million views. This led to an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show a week following the release of the video. Martel went on to be one of the winners of the competition which led to a six-week tour with The Queen Extravaganza in 2012. The Queen Extravaganza had continued to tour with Martel until the end of 2016.
In 2017, Martel left Queen Extravaganza and joined the Ultimate Queen Celebration.
In 2019, Martel recorded a new version of "Silver Bells" with Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith that reached No. 1 on the Billboard Christian AC Monitor charts, and the Mediabase Christian AC. This was Martel's first career No. 1 song. He accompanied them on their annual Christmas Tour.
Martel contributed vocal recordings for the Queen biographical film, Bohemian Rhapsody (2018). Film producer Graham King confirmed that Marc Martel recorded vocals for the film in Rolling Stone article:
Most singing scenes in the movie rely on either vocal stems from Queen master tapes or new recordings by Marc Martel, a Canadian Christian rock singer whose voice is practically identical to the late frontman's. "Literally, you could close your eyes and it's Freddie," says King. "And that's a very tough thing to do."

I really appreciate that you guys got into some gear talk too - of course the film sound production team should be using what Queen used to help replicate those vocals.
The level of detail in how Marc interpreted, as in almost 'revived', Freddie in his less famous video 'The Mercurotti' blew my mind, gave me chills, and will always haunt me, positively. Respect
Marc’s voice sounds like Mercury circa 1974, a.k.a., peak Freddie (more confident than the earlier years, but with his maximum youthful strength and range). Incredible talent. Thank you, Warren.

I saw Marc with The Queen Extravaganza (in Toronto) when they first toured and being a massive Queen fan, it was a real treat! I really appreciate everyone working on the show and giving the fans a great night of Queen music. I 've seen Marc do some Opera as well and he really kills it!! All around versatile vocalist!!

When you add in his instrumental talents, and yes, even whistling ability, it is unbelievable. His buddy Tyler Warren has even greater instrumental skills (he did a one man cover of Rush's Permanent Waves) and is no slouch on vocals, but Marc's vocals are once in a generation just like Freddie.
As far as I've known, it has ALWAYS been cool to be a Queen fan. ALWAYS!!! And Marc Martel blew me away.

I remember pulling that double sided white Night At The Opera album out of my dad’s collection in the late 70’s when I was about 8. Marc Martell is such a talented guy, and I just love watching him sing. He just brings it all back. Been loving your videos too, Warren. Awesome he watches you too. Such a great pairing. Marc did Aussie tours 3 times. In fact, his live concert album was recorded in New Zealand at the end of his last down under tour. His brother lives there, so he loves to visit.

I haven't listened to much Queen after Freddy went home..and though the. band chose him, I didn't. listen to them with Adam...But Marc??? I will go and see. Might be the best track that you, Warren, have delivered for us PLAP acolytes. I've been playing with Steve M's track "Death of me", and it's great to hear his voice here in. the mix, and now I get to work with Marc's vocals! Mr. Martel? Much continued success , my friend. When Marc was the lead singer of the Canadian Christian group Downhere, there were many, many comparisons to Freddie Mercury. To be sure, there is absolutely no comparison to anyone else. They can't touch Marc for authenticity.

I LOVE Adam! They are two different artists and I love them both!
I've seen Adam, Brian, and Roger perform twice and wow what a show they put on. Definitely among the best I've ever seen.

I’ve seen 1 QE show with Marc and 4 QAL shows with Brian/Roger/Adam! They were all spectacular! Freddie’s music is alive and well! BTW I heartily recommend the Live Around The World CD/DVD album!

They didn't want to become their own cover band. They didn't want to be seen as trying to "replace" Freddie, which can't be done, of course. I understand their position, but I don't listen to any of their stuff with Rogers or Lambert, either, because it's not Queen, as far as I'm concerned.

That part of the interview was a surprise too! That they were only able to get a believable take after Marc had been singing on tour and jetlagged.

If being a Queen fan wasn't cool, then _cool_ wasn't really 'cool', why bother? :)) We were, and are blessed to have immersed ourselves into that legendary music. We wouldn't know how the regretful dullness those who got their cool checked by others on a regular basis feel. But, do we care? I don't, anyway. :)
I have a question for Marc: Does he think that the resemblance of his voice to F. Mercury's influenced his way of singing?

Hey Warren - I've mixed this a couple of times and comparing mine to the reference mix there is an extra depth and dimension on the guitars that I as yet cannot match. Is this your choice of verb or is there another pro secret you're prepared to divulge?
I always pan my reverb opposite to the guitars. So if the guitar is panned right it’s reverb is panned left for instance.
What am I hearing distorting on the lead vocal? You can hear it on "Hello" at :19 seconds.
