    Andrew, I stopped growing crops years ago, wasn’t worth it, I just concentrate on growing grass and doing more grass silage.

    Pasture looks good Andrew. I have a bit of low ground down the far end of the place that tends to waterlog in the winter and set like concrete in the summer. One of my sisters grew arrowleaf clover last year and was raving about it so I threw some in back in May. I'm six feet tall and the best of it is literally up to the bottom of my ribs! Flowers the size of eggs, massive amount of feed and it doesn't bloat cattle. Not much cutworm here at the moment- but they are talking locust plague later in the summer :) Enjoy your break Andrew.

    Growing corn is always frustrating here too, the bears took at least 10 percent of our corn this fall

    I wonder if the pellets you spread out when you planted also killed off the natural predator for cut worm? Seeing how your neighbouring farms have not had the problem. I have it happen in my banana farm at times

    There's always bloody something. I once had a fields of spring barley that looked fantastic from the gate but when i went to to the first herbicide spray there was a portion of the field that couldn't be seen from the gate that was absolutely decimated by bloody leather jackets. I wouldn't want to have it happen again as the leather jacked spray (Dursban) has now been banned in Northern Ireland.

    Why wouldn't you consider replanting the maize after being sprayed with cut worm control?

    You've got a labrador retriever and a shotgun; the pheasant problem is solvable. Within appropriate laws and regulations, of course.

      The pheasants are possibly after the insects too

    Do you do a post sowing pre emergent Andrew? Pretty common practice here to do a weed spray and insecticide to help

  • @caveweta1
    @caveweta1 19 дней назад

    So is the cut worm dormant in the soil through the winter? Can they not treat the seed with insecticide before planting or won’t that help?

    A bit of a bugger about the maize, next thing the ants will be carrying the plants away! In all seriousness though would you consider moving away from growing maize and grow forage crops?

  • @henkvandelaar8
    @henkvandelaar8 16 дней назад

    Why don't you stop growing and feeding corn? We did a few years a go and we are very excited about it, because of the increased health of the cows. Corn has a lot of mycotoxines, gives to much digestion on the intestines and has too much omega 6.
