Hi Nigel thank you for showing how a proper saddle stitch is done incorporating the Knot, as all the other videos omit this important detail, nice to see there are still some real craftsmen out there. I was tought at Cordwainers college in Hackney London some 14 years ago.
Great video, Nigel! A true Master reveals his secrets. Can you also reveal the brand of thinging chisel you are using and wher I might get one? Thanks for the video and your kind response! Michelle
Exactly the type of belt I want to make. Where can I get tips on the stitching pattern (bit like the design on the gun belt in FFOD). Does it need to be lined?
daytonpyro it's cleaner if you do but it'll be ridiculously long and tangled. I'm not and expert but you can just push the ends in between the two leather pieces and burn the ends.
I am and I do, I use Braided Polyester which is extremely strong, will not fur so will allow very long runs to be stitched. I do not like to see joins in stitching so prefer to deal with very long threads to avoid this.
It goes without saying that your work is stunning and thank you for sharing. Silly question though - do you make your belt boxes or do you have a source for them? I'm trying to find nice packaging for my belts and wallets and I very much like your design.
Thanks for answering via e-mail, Nigel. I'll share your answer here for other inquiring minds: Not a thonging chisel but pricking iron. This one's Dixon 6 holes per inch model. Cheers, Michelle
By a long shot, the best hand stitching video on the internet. This is exactly how my teacher taught me to hand stitch. Thank you Armitage Leather.
Thank you JJ.
I’m just starting in leather work. I’m making Christmas gifts for my family. This video is inspiring and educational!!! Thank you!!
I thought my stitching was neat until I saw all the things I was doing wrong - many thanks
for pointing me in the right direction
Cheers Bri
Learned a lot from this video on technique of hand sewing. I have been watching it over and over to catch on and improve my hand sewing.

Despite of the shown technique - the music is great. :)
I like that fancy work bench you have ;)
Hi Nigel, did u use a single thread for the whole belt? Thank you
