This entire album is a Masterpiece, can't wait to see your reaction to "Green Earrings". Owsley Stanley, a chemist brought LSD to the San Francisco area in the early 60's, and
introduced tripping to the hippie culture. He was also a roadie for the Grateful Dead. However his fame caught the attention of the Feds, so ends the song, "Is there gas in the car"

"...yes there's gas in the car...I think the people down the hall know who you are", funny thing I was a Steely Dan fan since the '70's as a kid, my mom had a killer record collection, yet didn't know what or whom this song was about for a long time, even years after discovering the magic and majesty of lysergic, Owsley is now a hero of mine, get along Kid Charlemagne indeed.

Such incredible musicianship, they had the best session players to create the ultimate ensemble band for each song and album, Larry Carlton just blows me away with his guitar playing on this one, so advanced but tasty and groovy, great tribute for Owsley.

This song was also sampled by some rappers...can't recall who. You answered my question. This is my favorite by them, dig in. Also the great Larry Carlton on guitar. Enjoying your analytics of music.

This and Black Cow are my favorites by this band. I enjoyed your reaction when you realized it had been sampled! The song is about Owsley Stanley. He was a roadie for The Grateful Dead. He was known in San Francisco for making the best LSD and was the main supplier to the Haight-Ashbury district during the 60s. The line “Look at all the white men on the street” referred to when cocaine took over.

Great groove to this tune. The drum beat is fire mixed with the jazz great Larry Carlton's guitar work ( legendary ) is off the hook.

Let’s face it, if an R nB artist or a rapper then Steely Dan is your go to if you want a sample. Fagen and Becker were the funkiest white guys on the planet. Do more Dan! ❤

I'm old school. REALLY old school. I think sampling should be outlawed. Write your own damn music and play your own damn instruments.
But anyway, I LOVE Steely Dan, and this track in particular, and I'm glad you did too.

    Genius? Yes it is.
Yacht rock wants to be this, but isn't. It's a fantastic song off from (maybe) their best LP. I think they really hit their stride right here and on the rest of the Royal Scam.
Funk? Yes there is. Perhaps do Green Earrings next,.
    47 years fresh.

its funny cause back in the 80s a lot of black people when subwoofers got popular would be rockin steely dan and from florida when i move to new mexico they'd be rockin Stevie ray Vaughn ,that struck me in awe becuase it wasnt a thing but it was normal to them ,it kinda stuck out in a good way

Just by chance you crossed the diamond with the pearl
You turned it on the world…
No other interpretation than LSD. Not Psylicybin or other natural substance…Chemistry.
Those test tubes and the scales
Get ‘em all out of here….
You caught on quickly. I’ve only heard this song hundreds of times and I still don’t fully get it - but it’s poetry open to interpretation and templates.
