This was one of the first FDS games I ever played when I started trying out games for the system and I was blown away by the unique sounds in the game like bells and violins. This is another Konami classic where I wonder how well it would have done with a western release? Maybe not as popular as Contra but definitely memorable like Jackal and Rush 'n Attack. 😊
This almost looks like an entire console generation leap over Zelda. The black outline, the use of highlights and shadow, an understanding of color relationships, easy to read characters that stay on model, and background tiles that hint at a stylized 3D space, without overthinking it... Even a main character with more than 3 colors. This is AAA. It's a shame the actual design behind all this amazing technique was all a bit safe and by the numbers. No wonder why 80's Konami preferred to rip off Hollywood or go officially licensed. That said, any FDS game that still looks, sounds, and plays this well in 2024, must have blown the minds of those who discovered it in early '87. We know what lies ahead will steal a lot of this game's thunder, but I would give nearly anything to be a Japanese gamer when this landed. And get excited over the maturation of the Famicom's 8-bit design facing off against the PC Engine's next generation tech. And not know what the future holds...
@@mistertagomago7974 I was referring what lies ahead in their time, not ours - the fact that carts would outshine the add on designed to replace them must have been a bitter pill back in the day. @@juststatedtheobvious9633 Oh was Blaster Master originally on the disc system? If it was I didn't know that. And this game is a standout. I also loved Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa.
I think you mean OH! MY GOD The graphics in this game are just amazing for an FDS game, especially one from 1987. Consider the kind of games we got in the US before the use of mapper chips and compare it to this. Konami really are the masters of the FDS, squeezing every drop of power they can out of the add-on.
@@anactualmotherbear After 13 years in the country, I don't entirely disagree that exclamation marks are frequently oddly placed (especially "Oh!" which gets used rather liberally). However, at least recently, "Oh my God!" is generally written with the exclamation at the end - from what I see on a daily basis.
Vusually, this looks about half a generation ahead of the other games you've covered for the Disk System so far (and it looks pretty fun, to boot). It's a real pity Konami never followed this up or released it in the West.
Konami doing Konami things, as usual at that point. Yet another solid action game. I played through it once, it's actually pretty fun. The presentation is very good for the time too. Worth a playthrough in my book.
Just looking at the video, it reminds me a lot of the topdown sections of Blaster Master. Or rather, in original release order, I wonder if this was an influence on how that game designed its top-down sections?
Crazy thing about this game too is that the entire thing is in English, even though the OH! MY GOD at the start was slightly Engrish. If they brought this to the Switch online service they wouldn't have to do much of anything except maybe translate the manual.
The Medusa Head mini bosses in stage 5 are the most infuriatingly difficult and unfair enemies I've ever encountered. It's nearly impossible to avoid damage. You just have to go in with a ton of health and tank the fight.
I think I've heard of this one but never gave it a good look. water being as deadly as lava though? yeah that sounds like a videogame alright. sounds like I might need to give it a second look, though!
@@ChristopherSobieniak That would be ニック and not ニコル. By that logic, they could’ve called him Zachary. We are transliterating the katakana into something English-like, not making a localization.

The diamonds!
Why was I not surprised that you immediately have the ST:TOS font available?

A lot of FDS games looked more like later NES releases. This game is plenty fun though either way. What's the games that'll steal it's thunder?

Very reminiscent of Hudson’s Bomber King (RoboWarrior) and Sunsoft’s Blaster Master, I wonder if it influenced them in any way.

I concur, the exclamation comes after "Oh" as if surprised to see your God appearing.
@@horgh_japan It's a weirdly common phrase to see in Japanese media. Always an exclamation point after OH!

Konami library on FDS was really exciting, except for the Exciting sports series 😅

It is fun! I can easily vouch for it.
It looks like a mash-up of Blaster Master, Fester's Quest, and Alien Syndrome, with a dash of Crystalis.
haven't been following these as well as i was with famidaily but i had to pop in for a banger

I've seen them compared. This game despite being older feels like a more refined take on it (though I'm not sure which game id say is better overall)

There is a hack rom to run this game on NES/Famicom perfectly well!

I think its Nicole...not Nikol
Yeah, probably. The way Japan writes these in katakana, I could see how confusing this could be.
They (whoever it was) probably decided to transliterate it as Nicol because Nicole is a girl’s name and ニコル is a guy.

Konami is known for making good games with red-haired, blue clothed protagonists. Maybe Nicol is Mikey's descendant.
