I think the HPRShredder mindset leads to the truest definition of a hidden gem: lots of games are hidden gems if you take your time and let it speak to you on its own terms. Hold it up and see how the light catches, behind one gleam could be another

THIS is exactly how I envisioned a Pokemon for the NES to look like. Konami was always good at making crisp-looking sprites, and matches GameFreak's initial productions.
Another incredible video! Thank you. I’ve been playing games since the early 80’s, watching “hidden gem” videos since the dawn of RUclips and this is the first time I’ve ever heard of this one. Truly appreciate the effort you put into these videos.
This video came at a perfect time, I had a really lousy day and even considered saving the video for later when I saw it in my notifications, but nope - sat through it in one go and it was lovely. Made my day, so thanks for that! 🙏 Also thanks as always for showcasing all the cover art, manual art, even the ads - so glad you're sticking to that format, because it sets the mood so well, like it sends you back in time a little bit. I really wanna play this game now. The Layla-Nicol-Mario-Zelda comparison seems on point. (Also the fingersnap edit in the beginning, my _god_ 😭 However long it took to edit that, it was worth every second)

Hello! I recently discovered your channel and have been really enjoying your videos. Your speaking tone is so easy to listen to, and I really appreciate your dedication to using old hardware and capturing the mindset of someone playing these games when they were first released. I’m so thankful for your videos and grateful that you spend the time to make them. Thanks to your video on the original Legend of Zelda, I finally played it for more than 5 minutes, and with some help from the online manual, I’ve completed dungeon 3 and am on my way to dungeon 4! Keep up the great work! You are really inspiring people!
I hope you enjoy the rest of Zelda! It's a beautiful game. I think about it often. Also, I'm glad you've been enjoying the videos. Hoping to get a new one out in the next two or three weeks.
Another great review! The layout of the first level is really good! It made me want to explore and got me curious enough to get really into the game. And like you mentioned, the player controls really smooth! This game is truly awesome! I had never heard about it before when me and my brother stumbled unto it a few years ago. Love it!
I know it's only been a few months since your last video but it felt like an eternity! I'm also glad you're covering this game in particular because it is one of the best classic Konami games that we never got in the US. I would have played the heck out of this had it come out when I was a kid and discovered it maybe 15 to 20 years ago. 😇
I keep trying to get quicker but then I also keep wanting to do more with the editing! But I'm going to try and get this next one out sooner if I can. It's generally not a good strategy to upload so randomly. But I'm always working on them. Thanks for the comment!
@@HPRshredder Nah man take all the time you need and I'm in no way complaining just excited! That was another fantastic review with great editing but you're right in that this is a more refined and better implementation of what they did with King Kong 2 which I never beat but am familiar with. I certainly miss this era of Konami as a kid in the late 80's and early 90's where they seemed infallible with the memorable music, charming graphics, and level of sheen unrivaled by few other than Nintendo themselves or Capcom. Once their heavy hitters left to join or start other companies like in the case of Treasure they just haven't been able to recover with the exception of Kojima's Metal Gear games. Now they have become more like a publisher and just outsource their games to other developers.
I'd give it the title of hidden gem based on everything you said. Great video as always man, that intro as great. Laugh so hard at the echoing "but actually good" Also daaaaamn that outro song goes hard.
@@HPRshredder I did; it was clearly such a labor of love for a game I really hold in high regard; I’m so happy you had such a deeply enjoyable experience from it, I certainly deeply enjoyed watching your video! Passionate and beautifully made as always; and I think you’re so correct Ai Senshi Nicol has all the tenants of a great 8-bit Konami classic, refined to perfection
Well, I found the first game I'm trying out on my Everdrive when it arrives besides Cosmic Epsilon and Getsu Fuuma Den!! Got an audio expansion module too, so I can get the full experience. This game looks absolutely fantastic right off the bat, I can't believe I wasn't familiar with this one prior? I'm blown away just watching you mess around with the controls around the 15 minute mark, I've never seen anything like that on the Famicom. Haven't played King Kong 2 yet, but spent a good amount of time with Goemon, and this definitely looks like a huge step up in both playability and fairness overall. Kinda has a top down Blaster Master or Gremlins 2 feel but this looks infinitely more enjoyable imo. Also, your editing has gotten SO good, man. Always love seeing your stuff pop up :)
I hope you enjoy the Everdrive when it arrives! It's a very convenient tool. I have one as well, but it's a bit of an older model. One for the NES and one for the N64. Also, Ghetsu Fuuma Den is the next game I'm playing - so we'll be playing at the same time!
Ai Senshi Nicol, seems like a mash-up of "Gremlins 2: The New Batch", 'Fester's Quest', 'Blaster Master', 'The Guardian Legend', and a splash of 'StarTropics'.
It also reminded me somewhat of Crystalis, which shares the camera angle and general movement style, the small square platforms sliding across pits, and the pits that drop you to new areas instead of killing you. Seems like none of those games quite does what this one does though. There are so many ways to do Zelda 1-inspired screen-by-screen (with limited scrolling) dungeon exploration
When you said there was **waiting** waiting while the game loads, I instinctively felt what that meant. Not long enough to really matter, but long enough to notice the time taken. Also interesting how this game has pits you fall into which can be fought through to something that shoots you back to where you were. Reminds me of Wario World. I wonder if at least one person who worked on this game ran off to make Treasure and then reused the same idea there. Finally, I noticed the distinct lack of Japanese in the game with just about everything being in English. Pretty sure Konami could have ported this game to an NES cart and called it a day, might have even gotten away with the cross at the end too.
I would agree with that, they really could have just ported it outright. Only would have needed to translate the manual, because the game is perfectly playable as-is.
I remember reading about that exact theory in a Destructoid article when I was researching this game. I'd link it, but links in comments tend to get auto-removed.
Man I wish I discovered your channel sooner! The videos are thoughtful and engaging with tremendous production values and let me just say: save some drip for the rest of us!
Fantastic video and review as always! The person at Konami who decided to keep this game exclusively in Japan robbed the rest of the world of a fun little adventure. The main question that needs to be answered now is who would win a showdown between Ai Senshi Nicol and Bio Senshi Dan. Nicol has some awesome weapons but Dan has that Star Wars light saber...
Now it's a great Tuesday, I already watched the 46 minutes, watched on x10 speed. That's almost as fast as I race on Mario Kart 64. Beautiful intro holy.
Yet ANOTHER NES game that was exclusive to Japan. Thankfully it isn't any... oh... it's great? Glad Konami will release on multiple pla... oh... exclusive to a 40-year-old foreign console. Time to sale the seas, matey!
Didn't know anything about this title and I agree it looks very well put together. You can see smooth scrolling and movement a mile away. Perhaps a kilometre (meter?) since I'm in Europe. Whatever. Piqued my interest man. I couldn't but think of the similarities with The Guardian Legend and its labyrinth portion. Perhaps it's just a superficial assonance but it immediately came to mind. Thanks and catch you next time!
@@HPRshredder I look forward to it. Just discovered this channel so enjoying the other videos. I especially like that nes metroid video. Everything you say is thoughtful and I hate the reputation that game gets for its age. It was probably the first Nes game I ever played along side Kickle Cubicle. While I never beat metroid until I was older as a 6 year old I would play everyday always getting a little bit further until I finally beat it. Metroid is such a special and memorable experience for me.
I keep wanting to get them out faster, but they keep taking so long lol. Hopefully the next one will be two months max. Hopefully closer to one month, though.
@@HPRshredder well they keep taking so long bc u care enough to make them this good - srsly ur waaay underrated in the algoritm atm but just wait a bit
watching Random Stranger's Year of FDS makes me realise how much of a cut above this game is compared to the rest of the FDS' library (save the obviously classics like Castlevania or Doki Doki Panic)
really enjoy your videos.. no idea how you don't have more subs or views. this is some high effort videos and i really appreciate these fairly involved perspectives. i don't agree with you sometimes, but always on subjective issues. you aren't just googling and parroting the opinions you found on some 15 year old forum post. you really are great at communicating the experience of playing these games. i feel like alot of channels like this are just people that own a bunch of retro stuff and spend more time on ebay than actually going at a game with the intention to beat it. with any luck you will turn into one of those channels that people turn on while they go to sleep for those chill retro vibes. i also think you should try to beat Ghost N Goblins properly. if you can do loop 1 then you have already done 80% of the work. im surprised most people, including you, don't actually like it. though im glad you recognized it's addictive quality. it's pretty impressive that a game with so few actions the player can make has each enemy encounter feel so particular where most games of the era where you can pretty much do the same thing for all of them and it tends to work out.
Fantastic video. Never heard of this game and it looks so good! I wish it had a cartridge version tho, since I don’t have the means to play disk system.
Over a minute is pretty short if you compare it to C64 "datasettes", or the ones on the Amstrad. You had largely time to cook a meal, eat it, have a little digestive, and maybe go for a short, brisk walk before the game was loaded 😂 Never played this game, it looks pretty awesome.
This looks fun man! I've been looking forward to this video. How much can you expect to pay for a boxed copy? Sorry I didn't stream on Friday, two reasons: Missing my laptop charger and I need to do some major grinding. What level do you think I should be at to try and beat Hargon on DW2?
Talk about your set up, please. Is that a US top loader playing famicom games and connected to a famicom disk drive? Great vid. Much like you this game feels like a hidden gem
It's actually the AV Famicom, it's basically the Japanese version of the toploader. So it has a slot that fits the famicom games on the tip, and it lacks that bump that's on the top of the North American toploader. I have mine modded with the Hi-Def NES kit, so it has HDMI out in addition to AV.
When I look at your footage of the silhouette of the statue of Space Jesus I feel like I'm seeing something I'm not supposed to. A straight-up outline of the Lord just being thrown casually into a 1987 Nintendo game where it's not at all needed... it's beyond forbidden, by the standards Nintendo applied back then. Absolute wrongness. Even if it is just an outline... of a statue... seen from behind.
Hi, do you know famicom disk games called Silviana: Ai Ippai no Boukensha? I search some fds game to play in my laptop and i found that game, its look cute like dragon quest game marriage old ys gameplay.
The blasphemy laws don't apply here anymore where I'm watching this, and we invented those laws in the modern sense, especially the ones you might have copied. We also believe in freedom of speech here. Thing is, we sent a bunch of religious rejects over to the new world, because every Christmas they'd go on about how it wasn't in the bible and people should not be drunk in public, so we said "Why don't you go over to the New World and bother god like that, we're too busy working and generally trying not to upset him by constantly badgering him the way you always do". So off they went and invented Thanksgiving, Second Christmas and now they have Christmas anyway, because some German immigrants brought it back. Also the only one out of us to ever ban booze, can't call a toilet a "toilet", and go heck instead of hell, whereas by now, that's just not as offensive anymore compared to the sexual swearing of the 20th Century. Blaspheming pretty much stopped being offensive in the 19th Century, except in the US, it seems, where they also tried to ban D&D and Harry Potter, were also the only ones to do that. The same with banning abortion to further that state religion of theirs, regardless, we're all secular out here, plus believe in freedom of speech, and blasphemy is just not a problem anymore, given how few people actually go to church now in Christendom, but especially among protestants.
Found you yesterday searching info about KingKong 2 in FC and HotDamn bro!!! Quality of your videos are simply amazing. Love the style, elegance and colors!!! You deserve bigger audience than you currently have. Im running a marathon of your content this weekend and so far I've been loving it. Thnx!
Blaster Master looks so much like this when you're on foot, but it's so much less interesting. I mean it's a good game but mainly because of the side-view parts, not the parts that look like this. This game seems to care about level design in the top-down areas (which it had better do, since that's the whole game), where Blaster Master does not

Yet ANOTHER NES game that was exclusive to Japan. Thankfully it isn't any... oh... it's great? Glad Konami will release on multiple pla... oh... exclusive to a 40-year-old foreign console. Time to sale the seas, matey!
I had, quite literally, the exact same experience upon playing the game for the first time, right down to wondering if I had gotten stuck.
Your videos are so good
Thanks! Hoping to reach the game in your profile pic by January or February!
ITS KONAMI KUNDAY BABY!
Looking forward to the next stream, man. I missed them this week.
Keep up love this 😊😊
The stereotype of Americans in Japan that an American character will say "Oh My God" will always crack me up. 🤣
Long time no see! Good that ur back at it!
Yeah, his video dropped as I was editing this lol. One of the few other videos on the platform about this game!
really enjoy your videos.. no idea how you don't have more subs or views. this is some high effort videos and i really appreciate these fairly involved perspectives. i don't agree with you sometimes, but always on subjective issues. you aren't just googling and parroting the opinions you found on some 15 year old forum post. you really are great at communicating the experience of playing these games. i feel like alot of channels like this are just people that own a bunch of retro stuff and spend more time on ebay than actually going at a game with the intention to beat it.
with any luck you will turn into one of those channels that people turn on while they go to sleep for those chill retro vibes.
i also think you should try to beat Ghost N Goblins properly. if you can do loop 1 then you have already done 80% of the work. im surprised most people, including you, don't actually like it. though im glad you recognized it's addictive quality. it's pretty impressive that a game with so few actions the player can make has each enemy encounter feel so particular where most games of the era where you can pretty much do the same thing for all of them and it tends to work out.
Fantastic video. Never heard of this game and it looks so good! I wish it had a cartridge version tho, since I don’t have the means to play disk system.
This video is S tier
Another banger
Yes. Hidden gem. I'd love to hear more about FDS exclusive games. It's a library I'm not very familiar with
sub count going up!!! hell yea boi!!!
Over a minute is pretty short if you compare it to C64 "datasettes", or the ones on the Amstrad. You had largely time to cook a meal, eat it, have a little digestive, and maybe go for a short, brisk walk before the game was loaded 😂
Never played this game, it looks pretty awesome.
LETS GOOOOO
This makes me think of Blaster Master’s dungeon levels.
Maybe "Nicol" is a mistranslation of "Nikal" or "Mikal" as an allusion to Russian Space Exploration (Space Race)? Just my nerdy hypothesis 🤭.
It's definitely possible, that's not the worst theory. There's not much info about this game out there, and they never revisited it, so I could see it
@@HPRshredder I'd never heard of the game before being recommended your video, so I love learning about new stuff!
Oh! My God.
I'd actually suggest saving your cosmo balls for after you get your girl back, if you catch my drift.
Good! I hated the cryptic bombable walls.
This looks fun man! I've been looking forward to this video. How much can you expect to pay for a boxed copy?
Sorry I didn't stream on Friday, two reasons: Missing my laptop charger and I need to do some major grinding. What level do you think I should be at to try and beat Hargon on DW2?
Oh man it's on the disk system add on! I can't play it then :(.
man, that crt looks so good though..
wow 46min
nice.
@@HPRshredder in a video…
You rule dude
This is totally like the overview sections of Blaster Master except you can jump. You should totally play The Guardian Legend if you haven't.
Guardian Legend is on the list! It's currently slotted as a Season 4 game. Currently, the show is in Season 3.
@@HPRshredder awesome
Konami Konday
Some big visual similarities with The Guardian Legend.
Flying warriors
Please cover Castlevania 2 Simon’s Quest, that game is misunderstood like Zelda 2 in my opinion.
It's on the list for this current season! I'm looking forward to it.
@@HPRshredder Awesome, I can’t wait!
I don't, but I'll check it out!
Thnx!
Glad to hear the King Kong 2 video did some work! Thanks for the comment and I hope you enjoy the videos!
This is what I pretended the game I actually was playing was when I went into a level in blaster master.
Blaster Master looks so much like this when you're on foot, but it's so much less interesting. I mean it's a good game but mainly because of the side-view parts, not the parts that look like this. This game seems to care about level design in the top-down areas (which it had better do, since that's the whole game), where Blaster Master does not
