Welcome to the new Shmup Junkie. Now a cooperative effort. This is a great 1st video of the new channel format. Great job guys! I missed having those Sunday morning Junkie videos.
@@ShmupJunkie does an hdmi 2.1 cable have less imput lag than a 2.0 cable? And if so can a 2.0 port benifit for a 2.1 cable in terms of imput delay? I hope you answer as theres not one online anywhere at all.
@@Jinfwjump No, not the cable nor the port or version have anything to do with input lag. Anyone that tells you otherwise has no clue what they’re talking about or trying to sell you something. I did an old video years ago on HDMI input lag. Search that and my name and you’ll find it. It should help answer further questions. Good luck!
You know if Konami didn’t gave us Gradius on SEGA Genesis until SEGA Saturn, well at least we have this game that will simulate some Gradius stuff on SEGA Megadrive and I still wish someone would make a homebrew game about Gradius on SEGA Megadrive
The fact that Retro-bit was able to recreate the marketing with James is one of my absolute favorite marketing moments in video game history. It's so golden!
I'm gonna miss the old format but at the same time I like the collaborative effort intentions of the new one. This is a promising look at what is to come, but I still don't know what to think of the fact that the old format is no more...
Used to have MUSHA, Truxton, Forgotten Realms, Elemental Master, Thunder Force 2/3/4, and Gaiares over the course of the Genesis lifecycle with the latter being my favorite (Yes I had the T-Shirt). May have to throw it back on now that I have a wireless Saturn controller for my loaded down Genesis Mini and it’s all about that D-pad!
Gaiares was dope back in the day, and still stands up to this day. Get some Shmup in your veins and play this if you haven't before, or even in a while. Also, don't knock the mullet in the ads. That's some El Camino class hair, Hoss.
I already saw this a while back but thanks for uploading it on your channel for all the rest that haven't seen it. Or maybe I'm thinking of another video?
8:20 Damn it!!! That's the reason why I could never beat this damn game back in the days. The extreme difficulty was my only complaint about this legendary shooter.
For the folks who weren't around, Gaiares was actually rated by many video game magazines at the time as the best shoot 'em up ever made for the Genesis.
I actually remember the day this came out, and one of my best friends (to this day!) got it. It was well-anticipated; we'd seen the previews in some of the magazines at the time. It was a time when there were SO many awesome shmups, and Gaiares was no exception. WHAT a blast. Cheers!
Dearest Junkie, without you this doesnt work. So glad youre still part of these productions. Like the host introducing horror movies each week. This video is awesome. Well done to Junkie Jnr. Top quality stuff. Your new format definetely works!! But with you included! Xxx
Definitely a well deserved debutant video collaboration. Fantastic research, quality, sound and visual editing, speech cadence and pacing. I wish I knew how to equalize this god as to lower the volume of songs while I talk seamlessly. Props to retro arcade, props to the new Junkie format, props to shmup communities all around.
I remember playing Gaiares at my buddy’s house. We were really into shooters at the time, and we both thought it stood out from the pack with the TOZ system and its large amount of cutscenes. The gameplay was what kept us coming back, but even at the time we thought the music and sound effects were just average. And those castle-themed stages make no sense at all. At least now I know why! Still, ZZ Badnusty is one of my favorite video game villains. She’s so confident, and has such a bombastic name, and yet she falls prey to a regular ol’ guy named Dan.
Oh man I was starting to have some junkie withdrawals. Im really digging the new direction to the channel that allows lesser known RUclipsrs have a chance to receive some recognition.
Gaiares was an amazing game and a feast for the eyes and ears; I purchased it upon release. The game truly placed you in another world. I'll say for me the "fun factor" fell short of MUSHA and Thunder Force 3 but I played it constantly just because it was an awesome "experience". I still have my copy.
Gotta love a good start to a new era!! One of my favorite shmups on Genesis gets the love it rightfully deserves and from a content creator that really knows his stuff. And hey! I already subscribed to Rewind Arcade! I remember his videos on Ghosts 'n Goblins and Gradius. They are some of my favorites of all time
Excellent video. I absolutely love that you are sharing your space with others who love shmups and the retro game genre. I've recommended your video to the retro game and Sega fans in my Discord too. 😊
Good start to the Shump Junkies initiative. Rewind Arcade was a channel I follow so seeing a new vid from them was cool, but I'm very excited for new faces to put themselves out here with the channel
Sweet! The first video of the new Shmup Junkie channel! I never got very far in Gaiares myself but that didn’t stop me from enjoying it every time I fired it up!
This is really well done! Thanks for sharing, showing, and promoting this!!!! Honestly stoked to see content from creators I've never heard of and hearing their insights into games I've also never heard of!!!
Really good stuff, man-watching this was a lot of fun and it was cool to learn what the title means! I remember having a really rough time even finishing the NA version with savestates! I wonder how far I’d get on a casual play now. 🙈
I remember these ads and I remember renting Gaiares, I beat it...with cheat codes of course. I bought the game 10 years ago and yeah, that difficulty is no joke!
Excellent video! I was a little skeptical of the new format, but if it surfaces more videos of this caliber, I'm all for it. Fantastic original animations! Really helped visually convey what was being said. Brilliant!
Great first video for the re-branding. I love/hate Gaiares for its originality and for its difficulty. A really fun but at times punishing game with very interesting mechanics that always make you want to try again with a different strategy.
I used to own this as a kid, but could never get past stage 6. Still, I loved the game dearly. I bought a copy of the excellent Retro-BIt reissue, and while I can't even get to stage 6 thanks to my now-aged reflexes, I still love the game. In particular, I listen to the OST on youtube on the regular. An absolute banger. Thanks for this excellent retrospective, I learned a lot.
Amazing video and I love the background digging on this classic SHMUP! If this is what’s to come from the new SHMUP JUNKIE channel then I’m very excited:-)
Gaiares wasn’t released in the uk so I’d never heard of it back in the day. It was one of the first import games I got due to seeing RUclips videos praising it years ago. A great, great game and Jesus the music is next level!
Great new format, it helps me decide what i want to see in my game too, but i want to fucus on bosses more than levels, so my shmup will feel more like boss rush, but levels itself will not be boring too!
Gaiares kicks a ton of ass. I remember playing it when it first released on my uncle's Genesis. I bought a copy for myself a few years ago. The game is hard as hell, but that's par for the course with shmups. I still love this game.
Very well presented. I enjoyed learning the history of the games development. The developers are legendary and have worked on some of the best games ever created! You earned my subscription with this one! 👍👍
I bought the Japanese version purely on the cover, from an import store when it came out, being heavily into anime & the likes, it was an easy buy for me. I knew it was something special the moment I popped it in: the cut scenes were amazing & gameplay crazy hard. For me it'll always be the best side scroller on the system & I'll gladly die on that hill...
I still remember all those gorgeous layouts EGM did for this game. I was never a Sega kid, but for sure this was one of the games I really longed to play. Years later I own a Japanese copy, I like it but they might have overtuned the difficulty. I kinda have to wonder if it would have been a bigger hit if its balance had been more in line with its contemporary, Thunder Force III. Most people couldn't get too many games back in the day, so blowing a birthday or Christmas gift request on a game you might not be able to beat could be a risky proposition.
That game was never released in Europe (where the Megadrive/Genesis was selling extremely well). Yet a friend let me played his japanese version, and later I bought it (then sell it, then rebought it regretting having sold it.... took me months to get my hands on another cartridge) My favorite shmup of that era until Last Resort (neo geo) was released and blowed my mind away
I absolutely love this game! Great review and history, as always! It was a real passion for me when it came out, which inspired me to send my best score to EGM. Couldn't believe it when years later, I met Walter Day at a show, and he saw my name badge and said, 'Hey you have some scores in the Twin Galaxies book!' And I'm like, really?? He flipped it open and showed me this score, and a couple others. Couldn't believe the score was still out there, or that he had the memory to recognize my name. Quite a day, lol. Keep up the great videos, love it!
How with all these years of being a fan of arcade games I never knew about the Rewind Arcade channel? I can't forgive myself. Excellent inaugural video of the new generation of the channel, I can't wait to discover new channels and community members!
One of the best Gaiares discussions came on Game Sack when Joe showed his really cool Japanese cover while Dave had the extremely lackluster US version. It's in their Genesis shooters video if you're interested and I have to say Dave's face while he holds up the game is totally worth it.
not a bad pick for the first guest review! had no idea about the whole backstory on renovation and the spinoff companies. seems like a really fun shmup I'm gonna have to look it up!

Thanks man! Always honored to see you still check out my channel when you see something interesting. Rewing Arcade kicked some ass with this one. A big fan of his work too.
One of the teams at Telenet did eventually go on to make the beloved Tales franchise which my bro and I are big fans of for years to come. Come on, you know which one.
Thank you for reminding me that this game exists, I've never played it, but it looks like a pain. Also honestly wish I could figure out coding so I could be a guy making a shmup in a small apartment.
I liked Gaires, but I loved Thunder Force 3. Maybe if the original programmer had stayed onboard to finish the 8MB expansion, it would have been a different game. Regardless, that was some great info and a flashback to my 16-bit childhood! 😊
Never seen this channel before I wonder how he knows all that. The Genesis had a strong library of exclusive horizontal shooters but it's still a shame it never got any Gradius or R-type games.
I am glad to see you creating new videos again El Adicto. I also hope that you are doing well. Hey, I have an idea; if you get a mullet wig, you can be the new Jamie Bunker of modern times. 😆 I have missed your videos and I hope only good things are happening in your life.
I’ll have to try to beat and review this one myself soon. I bought the cib a couple years ago, and I’ve only played a little. Looks really hard, but very good.
The opening few bars of the stage one music kind of never leave you once you've heard it.
For real! I initially thought I had heard the name but hadn't played Gaiares, but as soon as I heard it I knew I'd heard it before.
Rewind Arcade puts out some of the best retrospective videos. Absolutely chuffed that your first hosting video is one of his.
Anything else would be uncivilized 😬

I thought it was a portmanteau of Gaia (Mother Earth) and Ares (God of War).
🤔🧐
I initially thought the same. This video claims it’s Earth-Less. As far as pronunciation, all the advertisements from the 90’s spell out, guy-are-us 😆

That plot has some serious parallels of the plot for Space battleship yamato.
Earth in a dead state, mission to restore it, that type of deal
Good to finally know why Gaiares is the Smitty Werben JagermenJensen of video games.

So it's Gaia-less... I had no idea. Great research job, as well as all the other aspects of this video.
Great video, I'm excited for the new format. Haven't played Gaiares, but I'm definitely gonna check it out now!
Gaiares is a Top 5 SHMUP of mines for sure!!!
Would’ve missed this if it wasn’t here - great way to shine a light shmupjunkie 🙌
That was awesome!
Have this and love it. Just need Master Yoda's Jedi reactions now. Big love to MD Air Buster/Aeroblasters.
My god. I just tried it. That game is mind numbing torture. lol
Haha yeah, you have to know which weapon to use where. In stage 2 try using the thick laser (I forget the name) because it can go through obstacles and clear away small enemies hiding inside the mountains.
Gley Lancer is nice but Gaiares is largely better looking.
