      A golden era? Where the longest rally in a match was usually no more than 4 shots? Literally these clips are extremely rare. Most matches were just a complete snore fest

      @@guitarreilly Even before there were long rallies, or better, RATHER long rallies especially on clay or hard courts if played baseliners like Agassi, Muster, Courier etc... Obviously at Wimbledon only Serve & Volley could be played, this was until 2004 when ATP standardized the fields making'em all slow and regular, making Serve & Volley ineffective. In conclusion: before there were 2 categories of players, the baseliners and the herbivores and obviously the game was more varied. "Today it's sad that we only play from baseline. On these slow courts, which in fact only change the colour, everyone plays the same way. Any player can play and win everywhere and the game has become more boring. Before we had to adapt to various surfaces" (Roger Federer) Basically the exact opposite of what you said...but if you like boredom it's okay your taste, de gustibus non disputandum est.

    • @guitarreilly
      @guitarreilly Месяц назад

      @@atarumoroboshi75 i actually totally agree haha we do need more variety but there has to be a middle ground between the 90s serve and volley and today's long slog rallies. Something is definitely deficient in the sport when you can win a major without making a single volley

    • @atarumoroboshi75
      @atarumoroboshi75 Месяц назад +1

      @@guitarreilly Exact. The reason why it was decided to slow down the courts was the service, too many aces were made on the grass and hard court and the game suffered as a result. Yours is a good idea but I'd prefer old fast surfaces, perhaps with only one service or alternating them. Solution hypothesized at the time as an alternative to slowing down the courts. The intensity of their best rallies is still insane 25 years later. As Sampras once put it, when he had to play Agassi, he had to shift up a gear. And vice versa. By competing with each other they both got better. One of the best rivalries in tennis.

      I always thought their rivalry was somewhat overhyped. As with any era in tennis, they need to hype up the main players to get viewers, because so much money depends on it. In the Agassi Sampras rivalry, Sampras was usually a fairly safe bet to win, and that took a lot of the excitement out of it. I don't think that Agassi / Sampras was anywhere near the class of Borg / McEnroe, or the big three.

      That's hard to come by. Both Agassi and Sampras have complete arsenal in their game. Their styles are completely different, and this adds the fun to the rivalry. Their achievements are totally different. Sampras won 14 GS and Agassi had a Career Slam. Agassi's 1992 Wimbledon win is arguably one of the most impressive achievements since he survived the serve and volley monopoly in a fast surface. Sampras was a dominant force during his Wimbledon days.

Rafa ,on the other hand, is at his most vulnerable when he is stretched to the forehand wing, as demonstrated by Djokovic.

His switching from a two handed backhand to a one hander at the age of 16 slowed his progress for a short while but then at age 18 he exploded. Therefore I can deduce two things. Either Agassi is not a good judge of potential or he had a beef with Sampras long before 1993 when he made those derogatory comments which he had to hastily retract.
      Which is also a reminder why their rivalry was so intense, there was needle between the two from a young age, no question.

    I've seen this video has pissed off a lot of Agassi lovers. I get it. I love both of em. But with all the hype that was ever paid to agassi's baseline game it's easy to forget that Sampras actually did win the majority of their baseline rallies. It's hard to say that or if Sampras was better than him from the back court.... but.... he did more frequently than not beat both him and Courier from the back. Just nobody wants to belittle that parts of their games by admitting it cause it's all they had whereas Sampras had.... everything. Demi god status. Just not fair.

      You make a good observation. I remember when I used to watch their matches, you would always get the impression that the crowd wanted Agassi more. But Leif Shiras said in their 1999 Los Angeles final match that the crowd loved both players but wanted a close match.
      And I think that makes sense, Agassi fans always felt they needed to make more noise to keep Agassi's spirits high, especially as for a while Sampras had quite a lead in the rivarly before Agassi pulled it back with three wins in 2001.
      I saw them play each other in the 2014 Earls Court exhibition in London, they both had / have equal love from the crowd.

    • @BurnsTennis
      @BurnsTennis 3 года назад +2

      Following on from what I just said, I always felt when watching their matches Sampras would get the job done, win or lose, I feel Sampras fans' were slightly more relaxed in the rivalry and during their matches. Again, I say win or lose because the rivalry was relatively close even if Sampras had the upper hand.

    • @ER1CwC
      @ER1CwC 3 года назад

      Burns Tennis Thanks for your astute commentary. I think Sampras was more consistent (certainly in the early/mid-90s), but perhaps his introversion and cool on-court personality made him more respected than loved by fans, compared to Agassi? Could one also say that Sampras had the advantage on faster courts, while Agassi had the advantage on slower ones?

    • @BurnsTennis
      @BurnsTennis 3 года назад +2

      @@ER1CwC Yes you could say that but I think by the end of their 34 matches it was about even. Agassi was 3:2 up on clay so in the end close, although Agassi won their French Open match easily. Their 1995 Aussie final could have gone either way and Sampras went out of gas a bit by the end with a few mental errors. The 2000 match was on the fastest AO court we saw and Sampras had the match in his hands in the fourth set tie break and let it slip, so that can't be considered a slow court.
      They were tied 1:1 in Miami and Sampras won their Indian Wells match.
      Agassi also beat Sampras on indoor carpet in 1994 Paris.
      Sampras won their 1999 Los Angeles match on what was described as a "slow chalky court".
      At least half of the matches in their rivalry were played on medium paced hardcourts, varying from medium slow to medium fast.

    Unfortunately the very best has been skipped. It was the set point of US Open 1995 where they have had a 21 shots rally and most of them on like the highest possible speed, depth and precision. Even the last shot was an absolute beauty.
