I'm so glad I was able to see this. I saw the Brent Barret version from the Tonys, but had always wanted to see David Carroll's performance -- both excellent, but Michael Jeter was incomparable in both versions!
Oh my goodness what a treasure to see David singing and dancing alive and healthy and Michael so gifted and talented. I thought the floor moved or the bar moved when they were doing this dance and now I see it’s all them it’s all Michael that is just amazing! Such talent. bright and short and fast but they live on in all of our memories and thanks to this to future generations as well!
David at 1:03 "... On this cold and careless day" lifts' his frozen had from the bar rail ;) Thanks for posting~ and thanks for finding this or keeping this to be posted 15 yrs later
This is great! I always wanted to know what their dance moves were during the chorus break - the Tony Awards clip cuts to the chorus! Though I'm not sure what the TV director was thinking cutting out their feet from frame for half of this performance.
Constantly amazed at the incredible treasures found on RUclips. Great to see David Carroll. And Jeter, doing his amazing dance on a wet surface and in the snow no less! The audio must have been pre-recorded. I wonder if a clean master recording still exists. If so, RCA/Sony should add it as a bonus track on the Broadway cast CD.
On the original cast recording Brett Barrett was the baron. The day they were originally set to record David Carroll hadn’t started recording yet, then laid down in a couch, passed out and never recovered. The only recording of him is a bonus track of him singing Love Can’t Happen at a nightclub with only a piano accompaniment
It was quite different on the stage in that there was a much bigger cast behind them. It was a fabulous, exciting show, very sophisticated and brilliantly staged. Totally loved it.
I can't believe I've never seen this! Thank you so much for putting this up here. So nice to get to see David Carroll in this ~ and what troopers, out there in the snow. Love this show, and Michael Jeter was crazy good in this. What a shame both these great performers are gone.
Had no idea this performance even existed! I've only seen the one from the Tonys. I haven't even gotten 10 seconds into it I'm already stopping to comment because I'm so excited. Especially stunned to think they were going to be doing complicated dance moves with snow falling on them or whatever that precipitation is. Going to assume nothing dire happens.
The fact that none of the fell shows the depth of talent. The isn’t easy choreography on a dry stage let alone a a wet, slick street. They were amazing
Fun number. I'm glad they got to mark it for the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade. They probably had a performance that night and didn't want to risk getting shin splints. That number is so much more extraordinary in a theater on dry floorboards. What a nightmare to have to dance on Marley on top of asphalt and in a steady drizzle like that. YIKES!!!
Robert Preston was so precise with his performance in The Music Man that his lip syncing in the movie looks uncanny its so accurate. One of his Broadway costars said that his sense of timing was so accurate that the ushers could tell the time based on what song they were performing. Personally, I've played the obcr and the omps versions of Trouble back to back and if it weren't for a few tiny technical differences, and the larger orchestra for the movie, it's almost the same performance!
Idk why they haven't released this audio publicly. It is obvs them lip-syncing over a studio recording. It would be nice to have this recording available for download. :)
The recording was delayed by legal issues until 1992, so this was years earlier. He became ill in 1990, 6 months into the run, so that's why he didn't perform at the Tony's. He recovered enough to attend the recording, but as was said, he passed during it.
I wasn't sure it was possible to neuter one of the great moments in Broadway history. But this comes close. That amazing staging in the middle of a huge street with a crowd who couldn't care less, on wet asphalt...that's Broadway. It almost looks uninspired. If the aim was to sell tickets they should have shown the Tony version, which is the best thing ever.
It's pretty much the same as the Tonys. Other than I think everything you say I agree with except I was pretty blown away by the professionalism of the performers pulling it off during adverse conditions. I'm sure they were not thrilled but carried on brilliantly. Also, the show had just opened and the reception was so tepid in the beginning. It didn't take off until the Tony Awards presentation. At that point though the crowd present was at a dud given new life after the Tonys. It crept along for months until that happened.
Imagine that - transferring a carefully crafted number to a fully lit street in the rain didn't totally explore the nuance that could be achieved in the theater. You wanna know what - to every theatre geek who sat in their parents house watching and hoping to see something from a Broadway show, this was friggin' gold. Sorry your sensitivities were crushed.
This was shot about 2 weeks after the show opened. Brent Barrett was a replacement. Although Mr. Barrett has wracked up lots of Broadway performances he hasn't originated a leading or supporting male role in a successful show. He did open "Kiss Me Kate" in the London revival but after Brian Stokes Mitchell couldn't do it.
I saw Brett Barrett in the London production in the summer of 1992 which opened after the Broadway production. Also, he and Micheal performed this number at the Tony Awards. That too is available on RUclips.
Thanks for the gift of David Carroll...sooo missed
This clip shows the talent and chemistry of two fine actors who, sadly, are no longer with us!
I always smile when I see this performance. Jeter is like a liquid balloon man, flying around that bar.
I can watch this over and over and love it every time.
Oh my god, watching this they're both still alive and I am 23 years old and drunk on their magic again.
We lift a glass to you both today and forever ❤❤❤ thank you both for your incredible talent and the joy you brought us ❤❤❤❤
I'm so glad I was able to see this. I saw the Brent Barret version from the Tonys, but had always wanted to see David Carroll's performance -- both excellent, but Michael Jeter was incomparable in both versions!
I was lucky enough to see this on Broadway! Michael Jeter was absolutely brilliant.
I saw it too, and I am forever changed by their sincere and honest performances. May they both rest in peace. They blessed us all.
Tommy Tune: genius. David and Michael pure gold. When Broadway was Broadway.

aids took so so so so so so so so so so much beauty and happiness from the world
They were magic together. Bittersweet.
How in the world did they do this so well on a WET and ICY surface? So much astonishing talent!
David Carroll, was SO TALENTED!
Loved Michael Jeter, and David Carroll had the most wonderful voice I've ever heard.
so talented, both of them. may they rest in peace.
Michael Jeter is gone ~ 😭😭😭😭

Both gems. Great performances.

I hope michael jeter is my dad or uncle or grandpa. Because I like him.

Such a great Musical Theatre moment! In History! WOW! 🙂!

R.I.P. Mr. Udesky (1952 ~ 2003)
Thank you so much for this. Two of the greatest living performers ever to grace a Broadway stage back in the day. Brings me to tears every time.
Also brings tears for me too.
I can't believe I've never seen this! Thank you so much for putting this up here. So nice to get to see David Carroll in this ~ and what troopers, out there in the snow. Love this show, and Michael Jeter was crazy good in this. What a shame both these great performers are gone.
Michael jeter's body is made of rubber.
Thank you so much for this!
RIP David and Michael
I love you so much , Michael Jeter.

They're dancing in the rain!!!!! Fabulous!!
I want to dance in stage , like michael jeter.
The fact that none of the fell shows the depth of talent. The isn’t easy choreography on a dry stage let alone a a wet, slick street. They were amazing
As someone has said, the audio must surely have been prerecorded but the lip syncing is perfect. Amazing professionals.
Wow. What a rarity. A gem.
All this on wet nyc pavement. Incredible performance! Slightly different from the Tony performance but every bit as joyful and amazing
Fun number. I'm glad they got to mark it for the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade. They probably had a performance that night and didn't want to risk getting shin splints. So great this video exists!!
...and in the SNOW !!!
completely divine!
IN. THE. SNOW.
The way to get drunk that I admire
I think this was recorded live. Nobody could lip to playback that well, especially in the close ups. So alive, these great talents.
Macy's Parade singing is always prerecorded

What is the year of this performance?
1989.
Mr. Noodle
If David died before the original cast recording was made, they must have recorded this just for this event.
He died WHILE the recording was being made. At the studio. It was completely heart breaking.
The recording was delayed by legal issues until 1992, so this was years earlier. He became ill in 1990, 6 months into the run, so that's why he didn't perform at the Tony's. He recovered enough to attend the recording, but as was said, he passed during it.
Comparies?😂
NOT David Carroll. That’s wonderful Brent Barrett with Michael Jeter.
No, it’s not. It’s David Carroll.
This is David Carroll and Michael Jeter in front of Macy's. As with all Broadway shows, the audio is pre-recorded for the event.

@@jimjimmyjames59 Your concern touches me.

@@tommytimp One can only hope.
@@chocolatesouljah different Baron at the Tonys.
Not the original. Brett Barrett was the first Baron.
David Carroll opened in the show in 1989--Brett Barrett recorded the cast album because David Carroll was too ill
Paul Kirchner Brett was the replacement after David Carroll became I'll with Aids.
I saw David live in this as well as in Chess. He was amazing and a lovely person when I waited after the show to meet him.
I saw Brett Barrett in the London production in the summer of 1992 which opened after the Broadway production. Also, he and Micheal performed this number at the Tony Awards. That too is available on RUclips.
