      I'm an old ePSXe user from way back... & Even 6 years ago it had it's issues. I was using it on my phone with a Bluetooth controller & it overheated most phones I played it on; but duckstation kinda just owns it... on Android at least.

      @@TheAffroShowGameplay extremely well made emulator, epsxe can't hold candle to duckstation, from precision to easy to use, all very well explained in settings, better widescreen support, way better graphic options and not as much infamous ps1 flickering effect, although props to the epsxe guys, it served me very well for years.

    The only reason I can see for using PSXe is if you've always preferred it because that's what you're comfortable with, and/or you insist on using real disks. Sometimes the classics (emulators in this case) do get outclassed by newer choices. That doesn't make PSXe any less legendary though.

    • @voteDC
      @voteDC 2 года назад +4

      On Android that really isn't the case. I like to use .pbp for my PS1 games. Not only does it compress the games but also lets you combine discs into a single image, so less clutter (one file instead of two for Grandia for example).
      ePSXe sees each disc in the image separately and so you can launch the second disc of Grandia straight from the menu. You can't do that with Duckstation as it only sees the first disc in the image, you can disc swap once the game has loaded but it's been very hit or miss for me.

  • @SianaGearz
    @SianaGearz 3 года назад +9

    My first encounter with PS emulation was just finding one of those black PS discs on the street 20 years ago, picking it up, and putting it into my PC; upon discovering that my PC can physically read the disc, but not execute it, and googling (just barely no longer altavista-ing) around, i found people have made some headway, so this made me determined to make it run. The emulator at the time, PSEmu Pro, was an absolute torture, it was prone to crashing if you even just looked at it wrong. I did have a pretty nice computer, it was pretty new, i fished it out of a dumpster but it had a fresh really fast Athlon 800 MHz and 128MB SDRAM and a TNT2 (soon to be replaced by a Geforce 2mx), so i was well equipped. The computer suffered a power supply explosion, i think a Chieftec, it even had a freshly exploded stank on it, this is how it ended up thrown away, but the mainboard, RAM and the CPU survived, and i had plenty of other components to get it going again. Optical drive, hard disk and GPU in there were toast and needed to be replaced, as well as the power supply.
    A couple years later, thanks to EJ's GPU plugin, i had emulation going full speed on an old laptop which was also discarded, that was a Pentium MMX, not sure which speed grade, but must have been between 166 and 233 MHz. The performance gap between a Pentium MMX and Athlon is several times larger than the frequency suggests, it's immense. Getting that sort of performance out of an MMX is astounding. This fills me with hope that maybe we can take the crummiest hardware there is, like the F1C100s chip found in the recent SEGA Game Gear Micro, or at least Pi Zero, and optimise the emulator enough to reach full speed reliably, which it doesn't quite reach on Pi Zero at the moment, and on F1C doesn't even get close.
    11:35 that slight clicking doesn't make me entirely happy, not sure what it's down to - if it's unaffected by settings, perhaps it should be reported to the devs, maybe they want to take a look at that. Otherwise, duckstation sounds nicer, i think.
    Breath of Fire 4! One of the first games i found cheaply back in the day, played it, loved it. Though i personally don't think its style necessarily benefits from upscaling, they had a lot of art tricks going there to disguise the polygonal nature of the world at times, such as with foliage, and they tend to become more apparent when you run the game at higher resolution. Makes for a great handheld experience though!

    Besides the differences already noted ePSXe has a much higher tendency to crash than DuckStation and overclocking is where DuckStation's real advantage lies in, since Duckstation is using dynamic recompilation vs the interpreter that's used on ePSXe, the performance difference is massive the more you want to push what the PS1 could've been capable of, for example, say you want to run the PS1 Quake 2 port at 60 FPS, on ePSXe you can probably get roughly 40 FPS on a good scenario with a really good CPU, on DuckStation you can easily get 60 FPS on much weaker hardware
    Edit: forgot to mention, cheats that improve visuals beyond what's normally possible, you used Gran Turismo 2 in this video, what you didn't show was that DuckStation has a cheat that once combined with overclocking makes it seem like ePSXe is running a whole generation behind because you can make GT2 have: 60 FPS, widescreen, higher draw distance and have every car run at its highest possible quality, the difference is honestly insane

    • @TheAffroShowGameplay

    duckstation is how the games looked to my 13 year old brain that had never seen an HD image or non pixelated 3d graphics on a CRT. So in some ways it's more accurate than real hardware because you can never see the games in that context again.

    Hi, are you familiar with the android version? The touch controls can be swapped between digital arrow controls and analog stick which is obviously better. It should make the character walk and run depending on how far you push the stick. But I couldn't do it in touch control. I can do it of I double tap, but that is almost useless because you have to do it every time you change rooms or let go for a second. And after that you have to be really quick and precise to turn running back on. It's just awful for just about any game. I tried Medievil. Very frustrating control. Would you know anything about that?

      I mean I always say to everyone if one emulator is serving your needs nicely, you don't need to move to Duckstation but it's there if you ever decide to try it out :)
      If you feel the new additions don't add anything for you that's no problem:)

      If you can't notice the difference just due to the perspective correction then there's definitely someone here that's blind.
