Loved the edit man. The phone screen overlay was great, and I know it took you forever to pull off, so great job! I have found the biggest advantage of the higher resolution to be, as you said major zoom in, but also if you want to add noise reduction to the image. In DaVinci Resolve if you have the 6k pixels at your disposable it amazing how much better the noise reduction works. Also I find tracking to be more accurate!! This is my experience using the GH6 5.7k vs downsampled 4k.
So basically if your going to be doing any VFX or extreme zooming with the footage I do think its easily worth it to shoot in the higher resolution.

I experimented with raw 5.9k on my S5 and the sharpness you gain vs 4k is insane ... IF you want to zoom in post 3x or more. For everything less than that it was really hard to see any advantage.

As a visual effects artist, I think 6K should be reserved for VFX shots and green screen shots. Most movies you see in theaters were shown in 2K for many years. Only a handful are shown in 4K today. There is no such thing as "future proofing" yourself by being able to shoot in 6K or 8K. Don't let content creators fool you into thinking you need high resolutions. You don't.

That's just not true that only a handfuil of movies are shown in 4k. We are in the streaming era. Netflix requires all new productions to be 4k. That's a tremendous amount of films. Also Arri now switched to 4k for their latest camera. 5 years ago this comment would still mostly be true, but we're now entering an era where acquisation in 2k or below will be the minority almost certainly. Projector technology really is the final thing holding back 4k being the norm across the entire spectrum.

  • @Nick-4K

I remember when 4K really started kicking off, I'd record in 4K and down squeeze it into 1080p timeline. Which made the image just a little more crispy. I now film in 6k and down squeeze it into 4K timeline. It definitely isn't as much of a jump as before, but I find that I notice a little more detail and I shoot in open gate on my GH6. So I have extra room to work with.

the only 6k that is practical is 3:2 open gate format so we can crop into 19:6 & 9:16 without losing 4k pixels. Vertical videos are here to stay regardless anyone's opinion towards them.

Nice video as always! 😃 As an amateur wildlife videographer, an affordable 6k is a little dream: things happens only once so cropping is a huge advantage and I can have 2 different angles of view with just one camera (that's why I use a lot the 6k photo on the Panasonic g9). Also, I'm a solo shooter so during a documentary is really nice to being able to crop a little bit in post just to make things more dynamic! But, in the end, Italian tv is still 1920x1080 so even the 4k is big enough

Editors will prefer 6k over 4k for cropping/frame headroom, stabilizing (does crop), transition effects etc in a 4k composition. Larger resolution is welcome for multiplatform editing, 3:2 6k open gate footage in vertical composition for social media platforms that use vertical video. However, 8k would give you more headroom so people might skip 6k and upgrade when 8k cameras arrive.

TOP TIP. Add some "cinema" grain from Red Giant, for example, and even when youtube compresses your video you won't see as much banding. Banding is generally about bit rate. 6k benefits include being able to stand up to heavier color grading without crashing the image. You won't see a massive file size difference until you start shooting RAW; great files but massive.

4K is here to stay for a long time (actually UHD, but thats a different story.) Just to the human eye limitations and diminished returns.
Thus, 6K is the perfect resolution for Mastering in UHD. (Again, UHD will be the standard for the foreseeable future.) You may need a little, crop, digital zoom, digital pan, special effect, digital stabilization and plain old debrayering.
Oh, and the 3:2 mode maybe great for anamorphic ..

Thanks Sam - great info as usual.
But I don't really see the advantage of open gate. If you have to film a object and it needs to be in frame from top to bottom, that object will need to be within your 16:9 frame markers and 9:16 frame markers, so you may as well shoot landscape (16:9) with portrait markers (9:16). Its to difficult to judge from the open gate ratio.
    😆 Hope that makes sense.

Your illustration for vertical video using Open Gate is not as strong as you might think. You can still use standard 4K 16:9 and have plenty of head room for video to be viewed on a phone. The challenge is you have to frame your shots for it and make sure you have that head room. Its hard to do on a dinky screen and shooting in Open Gate does help with your composition. So it is useful for those that post that type of video. But again, 4K 10:9 does still work if you do it right.

Hey Sam! Im very new in video. And I bought a s5ii but I really don't understand the Record quality options. Why do I read that I have to use open gate and they say that it's 5,9k 4:3, but I think that's old information (and info about the GH6?) and the s5ii doesn't has that. So with my logic I say that 6k 3:2 on the s5ii is open gate right? But then I also see that it isn't 422 but 420 and that im losing stuff (detail I think). So why shouldn't I use the 4k or c4k (Don't know why there is a c4k) 422 10bit etc and then get more detail. Im just confused and maybe you can make a video about this. It would also be great to get more videos about the s5ii and go really in depth about it and what the best lenses are etc etc. Great videos, helps me a lot! :D
What im also thinking is that I maybe can shoot 6k 420 10 bit for videos that I will use on different sociale medias and shoot in 4k 422 when I know I want to do a lot in post for colors. Im just confused :( :D
I Also know you say things about the 6k 3:2 in your video, so Im gonna use that until I can find more info about why I should and shouldn't use it :DDD

The content that youtubers create barely worth the 4k, more important is the content than the image quality. Even for clients. You should go back to Canon, R6 mark II is another story.

Go all out and ditch 4k. MrBeast, one of the biggest channels on RUclips, does all his videos in 1080p. 63% of people watch RUclips on their phone which defaults to 720p or 1080p max. Less than 11% of people watch 4k on RUclips. Even then, RUclips compresses your 10 gig 4k video into a couple of gigs, degrading quality. And then there's the banding! Watch any of Gerald Undone's videos and look at his background, highly visible purple circles of banding. MKBHD shoots on RED cameras and you can see blocky artifacts in his videos in dark areas all the time. Save disk space and make video editing faster/easier by going 1080p.

Hmm.... Lumix S5 II: 6K 4:2:0, max 30 fps except at 1080p. Sony FX30 4K 4:2:2: 120 fps, better auto focus and $400 less than the S5 IIX. Yes, the FX30 has an APSC sensor and no EVF, but with frame rates like that, it's kind of a no-brainer.

    • @AurelianIrimia
      @AurelianIrimia Год назад +1

You are very wrong! The Sony FX30 shot in 4K 60fps, not 120fps. Sony is APSC and Panasonic is full frame. Panasonic is about $300 cheaper. Panasonic has the best IBIS. Panasonic support 2 cards. On Panasonic you can shoot open gate for vertical video too. Panasonic is by far a better option.

@@DARKLYLIT You're right! I have only seen the top of the specifications. Normally it starts from the top with the highest number of frames, Sony has put it at the bottom of the list, that's why I haven't seen it.
      [XAVC HS 4K] XAVC HS 4K 59.94p/50p 200 Mbps 4:2:2 10bit MPEG-H HEVC / H.265, XAVC HS 4K 59.94p/50p 150 Mbps 4:2:0 10bit MPEG-H HEVC / H.265, XAVC HS 4K 59.94p/50p/23.98p 100 Mbps 4:2:2 10bit MPEG-H HEVC / H.265, XAVC HS 4K 59.94p/50p 75 Mbps 4:2:0 10bit MPEG-H HEVC / H.265, XAVC HS 4K 59.94p/50p 45Mbps 4:2:0 10bit MPEG-H HEVC / H.265, XAVC HS 4K 23.98p 100 Mbps 4:2:0 10bit MPEG-H HEVC / H.265, XAVC HS 4K 23.98p 50 Mbps 4:2:2 10bit MPEG-H HEVC / H.265, XAVC HS 4K 23.98p 50 Mbps 4:2:0 10bit MPEG-H HEVC / H.265, XAVC HS 4K 23.98p 30 Mbps 4:2:0 10bit MPEG-H HEVC / H.265, XAVC HS 4K 119.88p/100p 280 Mbps 4:2:2 10bit MPEG-H HEVC / H.265, XAVC HS 4K 119.88p/100p 200 Mbps 4:2:0 10bit MPEG-H HEVC / H.265
I have seen the specifications of Panasonic and it records 4K 60fps but in APSC mode, and in full frame up to 6K but no more than 30fps. About the price, I don’t know where you live but here in Spain the Sony cost 2300€ and the Panasonic 1900€, body only for both. For me personally, 120fps is too much. In general I never use more than 60fps. Almost almost all my projects are shoot in 5K 25fps or 4K 50fps when I want slow motion. I also can shoot up to 180fps at 1080p with my Panasonic GH5M2 but never used.

Check out DSLR Videoshooter review. Panasonic is definitely improving but there are still bugs in the autofocus, especially at higher frame rates.

Come on. Who is rocking 6K monitors? Most people are still using 1080p. I use dual 4K but a 6K file on a 4k monitor will be........4K! Plus most young folks who really don't understand this are looking at their content on a damn phone. 6K is for professionals that actually have a display that can represent each pixel honestly. If your target is RUclips/tiktok/insta/fb folks....for chrissakes, 720P will work for these handheld devices. If you are on tiktok using a 6K you are a fool. if you are a serious filmmaker then 6K will be a clear improvement over 4k as long as you have a display larger than say 60" diagonal, not a damn iPhone14.

This guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about. I honestly couldn’t watch this video. The resolution was so bad it was giving me a headache. Can you please put effort in and at least film minimum 8k. I personally don’t film anything lower than 12k which is why I use the blackmagic 12k for all my home videos and family stuff. I’ll come back next time and hopefully you will get the resolution right. I was getting a headache watching this. I had to squint just to be able to make out what I’m looking at.
