Playing with the reed up was definitely an early technique. You still see it with clarinet players doing ragtime, dixieland, and early jazz. It wouldn't have been strange for early oboe players picking up an extra instrument.
www.andyfirthmusic.com/a-how-to-guide-swing/: “Swing music came to the forefront and attention of the world during the early twentieth century when New Orleans musicians, mostly self-trained picked up instruments discarded by battle-weary soldiers at the end of the American Civil War. Being self-taught and approaching music with an African and sometimes Cajun roots allowed them to express music in a less regimented and rule-based manner than that of European classically trained musicians." I am guessing this is why they played with the reed up as they were self taught.
The thing is, with clarinet, you are best off waiting for front adult teeth to be there and fully through and settled. Then by this point they are usually big enough for a clarinet. Also, the lower register of the clarinet is similar to treble recorder fingerings and this Chalumeau is in C so you might as well do recorder instead (great practice for covering open holes) and then there is always the hope they will continue recorder alongside taking up the clarinet and have two lovely instruments to learn. Clarinet then supports the learning for the alto recorder fingerings and helps recorder develop nicely.
Thanks. I have recently started teaching a junior school child the clarinet. She is only just big enough, and I was wondering about teaching her a bit of treble recorder as well.
I was remembering the very terrible reed it arrived with and the recorder (flute a bec) fingering chart supplied with it. The recorder fingering chart is not correct for the Chalumeau- I think they were cost cutting because it is a very good little instrument for the price.

This is very helpful.
Would you use it instead of a clarinet as a starter instrument for junior school children?
