Excelsior Class is a heavy cruiser. The Lakota, while old was recently refitted with all the latest and modern tech that Starfleet had to offer. The Defiant is an escort, a powerful escort. In a one on one fight, the heavy cruiser will always win. That's why the Jem Hedar bug ships always attacked in packs. If only they gave the rest of the older Excelsiors Lakota like upgrades
If you take the torpedos off dual mode they are more accurate up close. Firing a spread is more of a longer range thing.
The Defiant seems rather weak. I expected it to take more of a pounding.
