What you can do mate is get an orbital sander with a 240 grit pad, add some oil to the stainless and go over it with the sander it gives it an excellent Matt finish. So basically professionally scratch it to save you looking at scratches at the beginning. Then just re finish it same way whenever you want. That’s what I do 👍🏻
That's a great tip! Thanks!
stainless steel is required in professional bakeries and kitchens, surprising more homes don't have them. you are so funny with your dog!
Good video & thank you for telling people they will scratch! I am a sheet metal woker. We get so many calls about scratched stainless countertops. If you want a countertop to stick without releasing use a glue specifically made to adhere to metal. We use Loctite PL Premium for countertops all the time and do not have any release issues. Also recommend returning all exposed edges with 1/2" so people who run hand along edge of countertop do not get cut.
I found an 8x4 sheet of stainless for $100. 1.00 mm thick. Going to chop it into three pieces and make smaller free-standing islands, 30" x 48" each. On locking casters.
You're videos rock man, appreciate the fact that they're informative and fun.
This is such a great idea! With a stainless steel countertop, you can roll dough (baking), temper chocolate, etc! The possibilities for all things baking and cooking are endless with a stainless steel counter. The only modification I'd make to it is to install a cooling mat under the stainless steel sheet because stainless steel takes time to cool down when you put hot stuff on it (example: chocolate to temper it). A cooling mat will eliminate that problem and make it easier, and more enjoyable, to work (baking cooking) on that countertop. Thank you for sharing!!! It's a really great idea!!!
I know it's been a few months, so I hope you see this...I'm actually looking into making one section of my counter stainless for the exact reasons you mentioned & I had the same thought re: it holding onto heat. What do you mean by a cooling mat? I was thinking just a garden-variety insulated mat on top but I think that would still prob get/stay hotter than I'd like so now this cooling mat idea has me intrigued!
Thx in advance 😊
@@marchi.fleming Professional kitchens, dedicated to candy making, have a cooling mat installed under the stainless steel. For what I've gathered, some cooling mats have different temperature settings to choose from, depending on what you're making. Those cooling mats can usually be bought from specialized vendors only. However, they're worth it.
I hope this helps.
@@marchi.fleming my understanding theyre plumbed with water to draw heat out of the surface
Thank u!!
hi , we enjoyed this video so much! can you please tell where you purchased the stainless steel counter peice?
Fantastic....I wanted to change my commercial kitchen into having cabinet bases...thank you thank you thank you
Lovin’ Storm♥️ what an awesome pup!
You kill me!! You and your dog make a great team. In the future I plan to put in all stainless steel countertops and now I know how to save a fortune and get the same result!! Thanks, Cathy
Great video and extremely good info. thanks
Nice job! Love the work.
Awesome! Thanks 👍
It looks amazing
DIYer here. Thinking of doing this for a washer/dryer enclosure. Your video is not only informative and well edited, it's funny. And Storm is the star!
Beautiful!
I Liked and Subscribed because I LOVED this video.... right down to the GSD. This gave me hope that I can make this happen in my kitchen. Thank you so much.

Thank you! Glad you liked it!
Your channel is awesome, man. Tons of great ideas. My wife and I are getting ready to build a home and I always see your house in the background. It looks sweet, man. You should do a house/homestead tour video, and reference/recap some of your projects.
Thanks! Congrats and good luck with your build.
Great idea! And I LOVE the dog!
Like it,like people who have ideas and work hard
Nice work. Great money for the product and it seems pretty accessible for most DIY-ers.
Thanks! Yeah, I think a beginner DIYer could definitely do this.
Great cost saver! Lucky you had the dog to help save on labor costs! 😂
So true!
First video I've seen of yours, great diy idea and hilarious video edit.
Thanks so much!
Nice!
*love it you are so funny 😂 storm is a great helper*
Thanks! She's a big help 😁
You have a great sense of humor! I have a German Shepard too.
Thanks you! Awesome 😃
I need to hire you right now today. I need a whole home professional stainless steel kitchen without the $ tag for a matter of Life and health 😣now due to being higly sensitive allergies and respiratory to voc chemicals. How much do you charge? Or do You know what company or where, who I can get this done for reasonable price? Hurricane IDA took my kitchen cabinets. This is my first time seeing Your video . Thank You for the very insightful video and I will be checking into the other videos You have.
very nice!
Thank you!
Thanks for the great idea. What gauge stainless steel did you use?
🤣🥰 So funny! Thank you for the video! I wanted a stainless steel top for our kitchen island but did not want to pay an arm and leg for it. Now I just have to convince the hubby to watch this and give it a try 😆. Wish me luck!
I'm glad you found it helpful! 😃🤞
Where can I get the stainless steel you used from?
So fun to watch……
Hello congratulations for your creation I would have some information for you I would like to know on which website that I could buy the model of saw with the guide that you used? I find its really great for a clean and professional job!
Thanks for the video. I'm working on this right now. Did you weigh down the stainless after glue up? Or any other left out steps. Thanks.Good looking project.
I didn’t weigh it down. The glue I used was instant grab. I did go around it pressing down every so often for about ten minutes just to make sure it was making contact though. Thanks!
Hello thanks a lot for this!
Have you already tried doing it with a sink ?
How do you cope with potential water infiltrations?
I can so relate to your verbal blah, blah. Hahahaha! Love the information. Thanks
Loved this video! Corny jokes, saving money AND a dog? I'm sold! 🤣
Hey first video I came across, got me subscribed! I searched the entire comment section, I know I could find in another video probably but after you lay the counter into the cabinets how/where do you screw the counter to the cabinet. Do you screw from underneath? My dad gave me this idea for my first home I’m remodeling and it’s going to save me thousands, Thanks man!
Yup from underneath
I'm here to find a direction to install a prefab ss countertop. I didn't know my countertop was hollow with metal ribs and folded edge to I cannot put it over a plywood like yours. I bought this after I saw another youtuber installed the same brand but his had plywood core. Anyway, neither his or your video helped but thank you anyway.
I LOVE your doggie!!!!
Nice
Thanks!
great
Thank you!
Bạn quá giỏi, tôi ủng hộ bạn 👍!
Cảm ơn bạn!
what company did you use for the stainless steel? I'm currently remodeling my kitchen and almost complete with the kitchen island. 20 yrs ago I mentioned I wanted SS counters "like a commercial kitchen". Ofcourse I was laughed at. I still want them!
Any info would be greatly appreciated
Hi amazing work! i question what is the Thickness of the stainless steel sheet? what would you recommend for a kitchen? thanks for sharing !
Thanks! I went with 16 gauge steel but 14 or 18 would work also. I've had a 16 gauge top for 15 years and never dented it with hard daily use.
@@HAXMAN yeah 16 or 14 sounds like it should be fine. At first i wanted to go for a more contemporary look with a 1/2''' thick sheet, i have seen it before and its just mind blowing specially from the sides it looks cool, the problem is the price ahahaha no budget for that! thanks for sharing good stuff man, i will go with 16 gauge.
I have some ideas for you. Don't use plywood as your base, tell the fabricator to use square or rectangular tubing to make the base, way stronger and will not sag or absorb water. Second, clean surface with lacquer thinner and use 2k clear coat to spray the top and sides with a spray gun and compressor, 2 coats with some reducer to help it flow like glass, let dry, and flow coat it, spraying 2 more coats, go crazy. Now to have scratch resistance, and you repair it like a car. Also if you're rich Tamco sells ultra hard clear coat for boats and cars, looks like glass but hard AF. Same formulation as what they originally used in Disneyland, unless I read that wrong
What is rectangular tubing?
@@kellyreid978 square tubing means all sides are equal length, rectangular just means 2 sides are longer than the other 2 sides.
Where did you get the steel sheet at?
Do you think it would work as a covering for a kitchen table as well and would I have to glue it down? Stainless steel tables are so great and the top of my table needs refinishing so I was wondering if this might be a good option. Thank you in advance!
I think that’s a great idea! Yes, I would glue it down.
@@HAXMAN thank you! Would it have to be glued down if it was a tight enough fit?
Maybe not but gluing it would help prevent dents.
If you have access to a metal brake, or the ability to build/use a DIY brake, you could always make it so the sides capture the table. You can make it slide on, from one direction, then you could turn the stainless, into a big C clamp basically. It would clamp the table, keeping the stainless secure, while making it removable. I would lay a 1/4" foam mat or lining, over the table, to act as an insulation, as well as to have something to keep the clamps tight by resistance.
Very purdy, have to know how that track stays in place when your cutting please..👍👍💚
Thanks. It has rubber grips under it that hold it in place. On a dusty surface it can slide though and I use clamps.
@@HAXMAN thanks dude, I appreciate the response. 👍🖒💚
Cool! One day Everyone Will love all! Sending my support :3
Best "thoomp" I've ever heard🤣🤣🤣
Great work.Nice Idea I hope my husband can build it for me.Thank you. God bless you. I have a question, my counter is a bit different shaped with sink and will the sheet metal can make any shape?
Yes, they should be able to make any shape.
Hey. So I did this in my kitchen recently but I have not glued it down yet. I was going to use liquid nail but I'm worried about that "popping." How did the glue work out?
It's worked perfectly so far. You should be good to go.
You need to be cloned. I need one of you! I have so many honey-do’s 🤣
Im a newbie baker, is stainless steel counter good for baking and is it more economical a.k.a cheaper?
It's great for baking! There are always cheaper countertops available. Doing it this way makes it very affordable though.
haha thx :)
Around how much did you pay for the shell?
Hi! Where would I order a top like that from?
A local metal fabricator.
Great vid; I think I’m gonna go with copper for my ct so I’m looking for great ideas like here; only complaint Storm is kinda of a jerk
How thick is the stainless steel
Was your dog “Storm” helping you put it down? Right after you said thank you the dog barked “you’re welcome.” Lol
Where did you purchase the stainless steel part?
I bought it from a local sheet metal fabricator
How much did you have to pay for the shell?
Sorry if I missed it but where did you get by the stainless countertops
You can get them from your local sheet metal fabricator.
@@HAXMAN I figured. Thanks. I am looking for pre fab online but its non existant
How can you not like a guy that takes care of his parents. Good son. 1:24 FYI 24 sq feet and $600 bucks/dollars is what he paid. Another guy below found an 8x4 (32 sq ft) for $100
Have you ever done one of these with a cut out for a sink?
I haven’t. It would be easy with a drop in sink but otherwise it would have to be fabricated into the top.
Today you could have paid to have the counter installed for the same cost as the chicken quarter you paid Storm with to help you. 😁 The cost of chicken has gone insane.
That is a wicked dresser you have in the background..
Thanks! I built that years ago for my daughter.
It’s been about a year now - how are they holding up ??
Do you have any pictures of the older countertops with all the scratches.
This sounds great. We are doing our kitchen now. I’m going to call my friend at the metal yard today…
Any updates….
It’s good as new.
@@HAXMAN what gage sheet metal did you order ?? Sorry - texting while at work (gauge )
16
what part is expensive and cheap?
What's the thickness on that SS sheet?
I used 16 gauge.
@@HAXMAN awesome, thanks!
Can't get the name of the place where u bought the stainless steel
Just contact your local sheet metal fabricator. That's where you'll have to get it.
When your videos title mentions cheapness, it would be helpful if you provided a link or anything for more specific items.... such as the stainless steel. A number of people have already been ignored though.
I can't give you a link because you have to purchase this from a shop local to you.
@@HAXMAN Thank you, what kind of local shop would I be looking for to do something like this? It seems a hard find.
@@Michael_Print Look for a sheet metal shop. If you can’t find one an HVAC installer might be able to direct you to one.
If it gets scratched anyway why not brush it first ?
Who did you order it from?
You will need to get it from your local sheet metal fabricator.
Quick question... you said that stainless steel countertops go between $70 and $100 a sq ft. At the end you said this countertop would be over $1k. Then you said it's 24sq ft. That's tells me you saved way more cause a countertop place would have been $1890 to $2400 😳
$2k for an island is ridiculous. I'm glad you made this video cause you just saved me a bundle by switching to a sheet metal fabricator 🤣
Did you have to request metal fabricators to polish the bottom edges?
Shall I say this channel is diy building with a dog 🐶🐕😁
I knew somebody named Smige .
Wouldn't it be better to just lay the RSS on top without all ate adhesive? I would be concerned about warpage. Metal and wood shrink at different rates.
You could if you don't have an overhang like I do. With an overhang though, the plywood would start to droop without being glued to the SS. The plywood is not going to shrink though.
🤣🤣🤣🤣excellent video
Sometimes people just wanna save. Always go cheapest, lol.
I wish I could do it myself, but I don't have a German Shepherd :(
😉
Up
practical as a cooking surface, but also very cold to touch.
Next time I’m going with wooden, butcher block style countertop for the island
Where are you from? Our entire family is watching this video (love it BTW), but we can't pin the accent!
Thanks! I’m from Georgia. 😁
Are you Russell Crowe? Cuz that'd make alot of sense...
"After gluing these pieces together, which isn't necessary, I'm going to screw them together." Um, overkill much?
Don´t shouldn´t eat chicken btw because their bones are hollow and a piece of bone can lodge itself in their throat injuring them. Especially not cooked chicken.
Not power grab - no bueno
What does cost matter when you're attempting to purchase a forever product? If you bought nothing buy commercial kitchen grade everything, then youve saved so much on job built cabinets, higher end counter tops, etc. You would save a ton of money just building a professional kitchen that is all go and no show.... Not really hating on your amazing concept. Its your money, do what you will.
German Shepherds are so judgmental 🤣
what if you just glued some tool wrap to your counter?
i always thought chicken bones would splinter and rip there intestines?
Cooked chicken bones are deadly and will do that. Raw bones are safe.
Will look terrible in a year. Dents, Faded, need to unidirectional sand to look new.
It’s been a year. Looks great. This is the second one one I’ve done. The first one is over ten years old and looks great. If you want to to add the “grain” back it takes 5 minutes with a scotch pad.
