What a Beautiful voice narrated by Brenda...I'm Happy to know that Washington gave Kate her freedom in his will...I'm sad that Kate husband wasn't free.
What a fascinating story, and yet there is so much the records don’t tell us. I wonder what affliction the boy had - sounds like something related to the kidneys. Kate sounds like an amazing pillar of strength in her community. Thank you, Brenda, for all your videos! Hope to visit someday.
This is why I don't like Black History Month. Black History is American History. 24/7/365. I'm a History buff. Some is great, some is horrible. But the truth needs to be told!
What a difference a name makes to an anonymous person along with excerpts of the enslaved woman's life who lived in George Washington's Mount Vernon. Kate must have been very intelligent and confident throughout her life very much aware of the unique opportunities before her in the President's household and knowing how to obtain them. It's nice to know there were some happy and life changing moments enjoyed by enslaved people albeit a select few during during the late eighteenth century.
Having someone who has endured the life that you have had must have made such a difference for women and girls going through the terrifying process of childbirth. Likely a far cry from someone who may more than likely be biased against you or not take your pain or struggle seriously (which is still a story many black women live through today).
Thank you for these insights into the community at Mount Vernon. I am going to the site now to learn more. What an amazing woman. Did Kate also help at the births of any of the white children born at Mt. Vernon? It would be wonderful to know. Thank you for keeping these stories alive. History is a valuable tool in educating our children and grandchildren. I love the way Mount Vernon does that. It's such a wonderful place to visit.
My 5th great grandmother, Dorcas Parker, according to Geo Washington's January 1773 ledger B, sometimes acted as mid-wife. Dorcas lived on the neighboring property to the Washington's.
Brenda, you have the perfect voice for narration. Looking forward to watching more of these videos about Mt Vernon 's slaves.
Your passion for telling the story of our ancestors resonates through your videos. Thank you so much for sharing these with the world.
Great but sad story! When you speak her name, she lives! Thank you.

It is always so jarring hear to the transactional descriptions of human beings being past as inheritance. SMHD

God bless Kate
They didn't look at these people as people they looked at them as property.
