Surviving Mars Review - The Final Verdict

- Surviving Mars combines so many interesting mechanics and genres but seems to lack the overall depth that defines more specialized titles. Nevertheless, it's an entertaining romp in exploration, survival and colonization that's good for a couple dozen hours or so.

The Tropico dev has great flavor in their sim builder games. Pretty excited to try this one. They are always different than your Simcity and Cities Skylines.
I was hoping it wouldn't be so cartoony. I was also hoping you could build underground in Martian caves or regolith covered structures. In fact do they even use the word regolith? That's ok, that isn't the aim of this, but i wish someone would do that. I'd like to see a Solar System colonisation game where I can go to Europa, Titan, Ganymeade, the moon, etc. I'd like to be able to build my ships, go to Earth and build up the space station and gateways etc.
Same here ... the cartoony style just doesn't do it for me.
In fact, the whole interface and hex based tiles are just "bleh" ... I'll pass on this one.
It looks decent but then I saw the drones.. when you zoom in on them they look more like a joke than a serious attempt at doing something realistic that could fire up my imagination..
Make your own game smart ass.
This reminds me of Fragile. A old PC game which along side StarCraft are still to this day my favourite RTS.
To me, this is the inofficial Tropico successor. I actually call it "Marsico". I didnt play Tropico 6, but 1, 3, 4 and 5 and for my taste, that series started to regress between 4 and 5. Good features have been removed, instead of being expanded on, and unnessesarry micro-management elements introduced.
Every colonist in Surviving Mars has more personality than el presidente in T5. Or look at the work-shifts of Surviving Mars´ buildings. Now that´s an improvement over any Tropico title i know (again dunno about 6) and exactly the right direction in my book.
If anyone prefers T5 over "Marsico", i can think of only 2 reasons why that would be so: 1. Theme - if you have no interest in Mars and find the constant red barrenness boring and find a tropical island much more appealing and 2. Elections - Those are missing from Surviving Mars (at least in stock vanilla).
I love that this game is free on epic. in two years the devs made this into a game so popular, they can give it away and still make profits

I hated it because of it's micromanagement, i tought i was gonna get a macro game set on mars, how wrong was i.

Snoop Beerus what I mean by that is I love games that allow me to do a specific thing a few time then don't worry about it for a while, i hate those who force you to do the same thing over and over again with no benefit Wich is just tedious, in this game in particular that would be the cables randomly breaking, having to assign drones one by one, or not being able to get a list of my colonists needs (have to search and micromanage them one by one, even Tropico had that way better)
Better or less or same as aven colony??
It's gone for realism to a higher degree than Aven Colony did, looks a lot better and is generally better reviewed.
Thanks for the overview. City Skylines with red dirt and no water then? I’ll wait till it appears with a massive sale discount and the endless raft of Paradox patches and free upgrades to make a working game have been applied.

And: why all the characters have indian voices?? the developer couldn't use native english actors...?? Wtf?..? really breaks the immersion as it makes no sense everybody is friggin indian in space.
Native English as in the English? Plenty of Indians speak English natively. Seems like it could be a refreshing change from American accents in games.

Cities skylines is good but a bit to hard. So with SM I will give it a miss. Shame.
Atlanta Chrome cities skylines hard? It’s easy as hell sounds like you just suck at this genre
its hard for a beginner on these type of games but with some youtube vids and a bit of time ...you will ADORE it ..I promise :)
