- Jan. 15, 2019 | Bob Boilen -- Aaron Lee Tasjan arrived at the Tiny Desk in his fashionable ascot and mustard-colored shirt, sporting reflective, red, rounded sunglasses and mutton chops. As he warmed up, the sound of the middle-and-late 1960s came through his seagreen, Gorsuch 12-string guitar while his voice felt both familiar and fresh. This buoyant, East Nashville-via-Ohio soul and his fabulous band have a knack for channeling Paul McCartney, Tom Petty and The Kinks.
Aaron Lee Tasjan's love for this older sound infuses Karma For Cheap, his recent album, with an optimistic THC-veiled sentiment - one that can be heard on "Songbird," his opening number here at the Tiny Desk. "There's a songbird singing, I'm laying on the floor. Something feels right that has never felt right before."
These are songs of encouragement, and the final tune in this Tiny set, "Set You Free," invokes that sentiment in plain-spoken language: "You gotta change your mind, you gotta plant the seed and let it set you free." All the while, drummer Seth Earnest, guitarist Brian Wright and bassist Tommy Scifres seemingly channeled their love of David Bowie's 1972 song, "The Jean Genie" (a song mixed in Nashville), in its rhythms and vibes. It's all in good fun, exploring the ages and traversing music history. Aaron Lee Tasjan has a knack for making music that is timeless, as good music wants to do.

Proof that there’s still great music!
Karma for Cheap for album of the year in 2019. My favorite live concert of the year in Toronto. Can't wait to see him again...
I've seen him live, opening for St. Paul and the Broken Bones. His guitar playing stood out the most to me.
St. Paul is amazing
ALT is quickly becoming one of my faves! Really digging it.
Their time-travel and background vocals are endearing.
Catch him solo and acoustic for an amazing treat.
best thing to come out of nashville in a hot minute. saw him open for greta van fleet earlier this week and got such a surge of city pride. cant wait to see whats in store for him
NOW... THE NASHVILLE BEATLES!
Saw ALT at the Cain's Ballroom in Tulsa with Parker Milsap. Both were amazing!
I have discovered quite a few great new artists through Tinydesk. Always a sucker for great 12 string playing.
Me too, what brand 12 is he playing there, any idea?
love it! keep hosting kick-ass musicians & sending them to us!
This dude/these guys are fantastic. The whole thing, songwriting, arrangements, performance. The dudes song Little Movies is on TCM. That’s how I found him.
Highly recommend following him! He's great live with band or acoustically!
What's weird is that this is probably my first Tiny Desk Concert with a traditional rock band...but I love it!
Oh hell yes, ALT!!!
So good!
One of the best Tiny Desk Concerts!
Small Faces? Love the sound from my youth!
They look like Rubber Soul Era Beatles, sound like them also.
Guys you are very coool band!!!
good luck to you!!!
Cool bassist - check
Love seeing the E.L.O. box set on the shelf.

Thats why i like this channel, introduces me to new music
Refreshing.. Sounds a bit George Harrison/ Beatles / Traveling Willburies .. Yet Unique in their own right
Very Cool. I love (sorry "Dig") this retro sound
How bad ass was this???? WOW
Reminds me of Petty.. like them! :)
Instant LIKE!!
this would have been a pop hit in the 60s
Rocking an ascot...don't see that every day lol nice groove tho. Love the sound!
I love his 12-string playing.
Anybody know what wild 12 string ALT is playing in this video?
Nevermind, it’s handmade by Luthier Scott Gorsuch
I love it! it’s not for everyone but it’s definitely for me
J'adore 🌷
Beautiful guitars
Aye some solid tunes and good vibes😁🤙
Hunky Dory - era Bowie?
I ❤️ ALT!!
Great stuff :)
Wait, what year is it? Have I gone through a time warp? Does the internet still exist?
Great sound. Got a bit of a Sloan vibe from End Of The Day.
WE NEED JON BELLION ON TINY DESK!
Not bad at all.
I like it the more I listen to.
I like them. Tuneful, melodic, and you can understand the singer. Beats the pants of modern tuneless offerings. Bring back the sixties, seventies and eighties. Showing my age here, but damn it they made music back then not like the hip hop, auto-tuned, tuneless stuff today.
Gary LeLacheur you must be great at parties lol
What is your problem with auto tune? Do you prefer strings out of tune too?
Hip-hop is actually super ecclectic, mixing jazz with rock with classical with electronic music with gospel etc... So there's probably some that you could enjoy if you started looking for it :) It's harsh hearing someone criticising genres when they don't know about them
Your criticism is fair. I don't know a great deal about hip hop. It's just quiet different from music I enjoy
I'm too old to party like I did previously. Give me the quiet life now. lol
Beatles Rubber Soul 2019 edition
Whats the genre for this group? Good vibes
New find, Thanks neighbor.
Would love to see an Aussie on here. Could you give John Butler a shot?
omg the beatles!
Verry good s2
Wonderful. Reminds me a little of Ronnie Lane.
Epic!
Kind of reminds me of the band Jellyfish but perhaps more Beetlesque. I'd definitely see this live if i had a chance.
Not my favorite tiny desk, but it had things I liked.
Reminds me of The Grateful Dead
Get take 6 on here asap. Please!
Joe Wilkinson on the bass?
Um... excuse me I thought I ordered the Devils food cake, but you seem to have brought me the vanilla pudding.
That guitar can attach to another mini guitar and become a double neck, voltron style.
What kind of guitar is it?
@@keithedmisten2344 Flux guitars, magnetic double neck, if im not mistaken
@@stocchinet thanks
Anyone listen to The Maharajas? This reminds me of their slower stuff.
Maybe Sons of an Illustrious Father will visit Tiny Desk Concert?
Shades of Jellyfish. Liked.
corksnuff pure extract
Is that a 12 string electric?
Overall I really liked them
Beatles vibe
george HARRISON vibe!!!
Foreal
"I am getting Neil Young, Dead man vibes from the first one."
,dan'
I’d love to see MACK or Dega on here
The background vocals are awesome but the lead only used one vocal style it seemed
Please bring Hiatus Kaiyote on
Please do INDIA ARIE next
This is why you should never watch a Wes Anderson movie before deciding what to wear. Or ever.
Ohhhh please bring Kali uchis!!!!!!!! Listen to the people
Very nice sound!!
The Mustang bass doesn’t have the resonance, richness or depth of a Jazz or Precision. It’s a cheap bass and sounds like it.
Muito foda!
Lead singer's 12 string model anyone? Thank you.
Gorsuch guitars i believe
Thanks
NPR We are waiting for Hiatus Kaiyote
When are we getting a Dawes Tiny Desk
Wait, there are people who don't like this?
Guy needs to open his eyes
this band would be way better if the bassist or lead guitarist did lead vox
He looks like young Yuriy Loza
Brad Pitt on the guitar everybody!
that reminds me, i need to get a hair cut
Lol nice song
Get Kyle Field on here😁
Not sure he should be the lead voice.
I wonder if he's ever listened to George Harrison? . . . . . . .? Not necessarily a complipent. He's the broke George Harrsion.
not for me I'm afraid,Reminds me of Glam rock
Tasjan's a former New York Dolls guitar player... so...

Wannabe-atles
This is from before they got good acts on this channel. I went deep to see what was available back in the day and this is a big no.
I thought all hippies were dead because of drugs.
The drugs keep them alive!
Sheri Pavelich -- the drug & alcohol pickling effect seems to have worked for Keith Richards!
@@broddr he's a special case lol
Great musicianship.
Poor lead vocals.
Had no idea Christian Bale played the bass so that's new and fun
yeh they suck but good on you tiny desk
Wow Jeff Mangum's son grew up so fast...
