M7A sound more natural. Love the care you put into these speakers. How will you be selling them? Also completely agree with your view on the midbass crossover.

The original video had some issues so I ran it through Shotcut again and made some changes so the sound & vision are better now ; )

I have these and the smaller M3 which I love so much. That said, the problem I'm having with the 7A is that I don't have enough room in my spare bedroom for proper speaker placement, according to the manual and forums. They still sound amazing, but I've never been able to get them to image as well as the M3.
Maybe that's why you couldn't fully enjoy them? They are definitely too close to those lightly treated cinder block walls in video.

Kinda surprising how speaker design has advanced to the point where $75 speakers can go toe to toe with the high-end speakers of 25 years ago. The M7As are fine but I wouldn't want speakers that large in my living room and definitely not in my bedroom.

I've been an audio enthusiast for 21 years now and I found most of the time expensive high end audio gear only sounds a little better, than a affordable but respectable system. The difference from low-fi to mid-fi is very noticeable and may only be $100 vs $500 system. But mid-fi to hi-fi differences a $500 system to $5000 system are less noticeable. Diminishing returns on audio gear is steep. A lot of money for small improvements.

I'm very surprised they sound so close. More low-end on the M7A which makes perfect sense.

Its impossible to tell in the video but the M7A also have better center imaging. But yes the point of the video in one way is to show how much better affordable speakers have gotten. The M7A still sound great by todays standards but there main value lies in their history and beauty.

Owned a pair of the M7As
    Heavy little things
    The speaker cone material degraded
I kept the cabs for a few years with hope of installing better spks
    Never did saddly

Great comparison, even more interesting tho if you demoed something like the ELAC Unifi 52s against the M7As they would just completely slaughter the M7As for $550...We live in great times for home Hifi

High end audio isn't always better. Preference is king at the end of the day and I've heard a hand full of expensive gear that left me shaking my head. The M7A are beautiful but I sold them as they just weren't to my taste.

@@iowaudioreviews I've definitely had a few of those moments too. I have the Sony CS5s hooked up in my office and ELAC UB52s for HT and 2.1 listening. I couldn't imagine replacing either anytime soon.

M7’s are very amp dependent. Your Marantz sounds very clinical, which they don’t like much at all.

Almost like you need someone here in the states to grab a set when they're on sale ($73) and ship them to ya about $50....

Been into audio for about 35 years now. Part of appreciating the differences in audio gear is developing an ear so you can actually hear the differences. When I started out, I had no idea what to listen for and my ears weren't refined enough to hear even if I was told what to listen for. All these years later I can tell you even recorded on your crappy camera Mic, compressed for uploading, played back on a cheap Amazon Fire HD through $30 Chinese earbuds, the SS-M7As absolutely destroy the CS5s. When you said you were in a basement I was even more impressed. With concrete floors there is very little bass reinforcement and the M7As played with weight and authority. They were also very balanced from low to high and far more neutral. I can't speak to the imaging and soundstage without being there. The CS5s are very tinny and the bit of bass being produced sounds very boxy. They would definitely cause listening fatigue for me due to the very bright top end. However, for $75 they are a great value and offer a way for those on a budget to get some decent sound on the cheap. Yet if that was my budget, I would absolutely pick up some used or even vintage speakers and get far better sound for my dollars as opposed to the CS5s. It's going to be used once you own it, so it might as well be used when you buy it! Anyway, thanks for both videos about these classic Sonys. I know they took a lot of effort.

I owned SS-m7s for years, and they’re not being fed the kind of quality source and amplification here to really show what they can do. They will give more long after the C55 give out. They’re not perfect. I sold them. But it took me $8000 in modern speakers to totally outdo them.

I later tried them with a Emotiva A300, VTV Hypex NC252MP and HK3490 plenty good enough and still just wasn't impressed... best thing about them is their appearance for me.

You can tell that the M7A's were designed for the kind of music reproduction that was popular in it's day, not bad just different.
