the logic is that the defroster and defoggers are visibility related. That's why they're with the lights. Did it NEED changing? No. is there a logic to it, and does it work? Yes. Not a big deal, as the owner of a GTI and a Golf R.
A lot of reviewers give the Atlas a hard time for it's interior. IMO, it's better than a lot of the competition. It doesn't appear cheap at all. Hard plastic is not an issue when everything looks good. I know several Atlas owners and a few people looking to purchase, and they are all satisfied. The native UX is not intuitive and requires you to read the manual in order to become comfortable with it. Fortunately it supports Carplay and Android Auto, so you don't have to use the VW software that much.
Calling the previous interior a « train wreck » is just not objective. It has hard plastics below the waist, like most cars these days. The new interior is better of course, but the old one works fine.
We purchased this car 3 weeks ago and here are my $.02: as you mentioned the infotainment is very confusing initially but after some time you learn it, works really well and you can customize it to remove apps that clutter the home screen. The interior looks upscale and better than its competitors, for example we test drove the new Lexus TX350 (their version of the Grand Highlander) and it’s easily a better, more upscale interior. It’s pedestrian compared to the 2024 Atlas. All in all we are very happy with this car. The combo of tech features, interior quality and looks, exterior looks, spacious 2nd row and 3rd row that adults can actually seat in comfortably, and price was the best we saw out there. We have two car seats and the middle bench seat tilts fully when allowing access to 3rd row which is huge because you don’t have to remove or adjust the car seats.
Nathan of TFL is a super underrated car reviewer. He's extremely knowledgeable and insightful. And actually has intelligent feedback on the trends and technologies in the current automotive world. I love seeing him on TFL, but honestly if he ever branched out on his own I would subscribe to his contents in a ❤ beat.
Don't ever tell Nathan I said anything nice about him, but he is not only great at what he does, he is a pleasure to work with. Comes to the table with great ideas, delivers his lines spot on and in one take (something I wish I could do more of) and adds wit, intelligence & humor.
Hey Motoman, great seeing Nathan in your video! What are your thoughts on the iPad style display. I much preferred the way the screen was integrated into the dash before this refresh.
Thought I was pretty clear in the episode . . . not totally against a screen, it is the UX that is the issue here. Actually kind of shocked VW admitted the mistake and made a major change. There is still work that needs to be done here, but a better effort. Mercedes sorta did the same thing for a future product. We have an interview the Chief of Design for Mercedes where we discuss just that. August 9.

Volkswagen is recalling about 2,000 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport SUVs from model year 2024 because their engines can fail while driving. “In rare cases,” Volkswagen says, the problem can trigger a vehicle fire. VW tells federal safety officials that “contamination during the bearing production process may have caused an increased particle occurrence in the engine oil circuit,” which can lead to wear around the connecting rod bearings. That can loosen those connections
For that money just buy a grand highlander max limited. Better in every way. Only benefit is these will have discount after a few miles on them the grand highlander won’t
Big man likes torque! I'm sure they're competitive, and could be considered by the same buyer, but how many buyers will test drive more than one model before they buy a new car? Don't most people purchase what their eyes long for, and not for what it is and does?
HA! In all seriousness, my father still has a first gen Touareg. Bulletproof and the interior is as nice as any other German brand . . . probably the reason it didn't sell:(

I know for a fact most of you ignorant car snobs will disagree with me and that is, nobody is doing 3 row crossovers better than hyundai/kia via the palisade/telluride right now. In the $50,000 give or take range. I challenge you to disagree with me and provide FACTS. The biggest knocks I keep seeing repeatedly are, one they are unreliable. Ok, give me the facts. Let's see which manufacturers are the most unreliable. And two, they are cheaply built. Give me the facts again, show me a car in the same category that is built better with higher quality material. Now, we can also get into performance and fuel economy. So if you are a professional race car driver who takes a family crossover on the track, then feel free to chime in. If you're so financially destitute that pumping at the gas station means the difference of paying rent or getting evicted, also feel free to chime in. Now, I am a fan of VW. Always have been. I love me some old school Jetta GLI. I'm talking early 2000's models. I love me some Mk6 Golf R. I OWNED a Mk7 GTI. I absolutely love VW. But, if you just want something for the family with a TON of features and a price that won't chapter 11 you, then consider a Palisade or Telluride.
Uh uh uh . . . Most of us 'ignorant car snobs' gush over the Palisade/Telluride twins in that they are great values in the segment, beautifully designed and offer good ride quality for their mission. Including me. That said, it is one thing to like a car or support the car buying choice you made in the comments of a competitor video, but know your facts before applying labels to folks when you don't know them or their work.
Koreans have never been known for reliability, or any other categories you can think of, despite 10 year powertrain warranty. In fact they are the most stolen car and insurqnce companies were not willing to insure. It may shine on the outside but lack of substance. They are budget brands after all. Why arent people gushing over the new Pathfinder and its Infinity twin? With bulletproof vq motors and a 9speed zf tranny, 6000 lb towing capacity, on paper that should steal serious sales from competitors
Can't say I have watched other reviews of this car, but did see Nathan film his episode behind the scenes as we worked together on our episodes, but if I were to take a stab in the dark, most of us already like the way these drove, just hated the interior. That is definitely the case with Nathan & I as well as Brian Makse. The interior was so bad that it kept me from suggesting this to most people. The struggle is this: It now is a complete product but launched into a world where the Telluride, Palisade, Grand Highlander and CX-90 exist . . . crazy stiff competition than in 2017/2018.
@@MotoManTV I subscribe to a number of channels and honestly, not saying it was the case with you, many seem to make excuses for what I consider poor 0-60 times. I test drove the last generation and agree about the interior..I couldn't wait for the test drive to get over with. Your assessment is correct about it being a different market now in this segment.
