- My own personal video tribute to one of the Irelands greatest ever hurling players, though many argue DJ was the greatest!. This video is a pick of some of DJ Carey's finest scores and moments from 1991 to 2003.
Denis Joseph Carey (born 11 November 1970 in Gowran, County Kilkenny), better known as D.J. Carey (Irish: Donncha Seosamh Ó Ciara), is a retired Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with his local club Young Irelands from 1988 until 2007 and was a member of the Kilkenny senior inter-county team from 1990 until 2005. Carey is widely regarded as one of the greatest hurlers of his generation, while some commentators rate him as one of the greatest of all-time
Carey's status as one of the greats is self-evident. In a senior inter-county career that lasted for fifteen years he won five All-Ireland titles, ten Leinster titles, four National Hurling League titles and two Railway Cup titles with Leinster. His tally of 34 goals and 195 points from 57 championship games mark him out as one of the top five scorers of all-time. Carey has made more appearances for Kilkenny than any other player and is the county's third highest scorer behind Eddie Keher and Henry Shefflin.
Carey has also been the recipient of many awards and honours off the field. In 1993 his hurling prowess earned him the prestigious Texaco Hurler of the Year award. Seven years later in 2000 he received this honour for the second time as well as being presented with the Eircell Hurler of the Year award. There was some mild surprise when Carey was omitted from the GAA Hurling Team of the Millennium in 2000. He was, however, named in the left wing-forward position on the Kilkenny Hurling Team of the Century. In 2002 Carey equalled Pat Spillane's record by collecting a ninth All-Star award.
Towards the end of his career Carey also served as president of the Gaelic Players Association.

D.J Carey play,, he just had an aura about him 'God Like' I would of gladly paid admission to the game just to see him warm up.. don't get that felling from any other player today..

the best of all time???? maybe. he is without doubt the most SKILLFULL hurler of all time. people who look to DJs scoring record and say his does not match Rings, henrys or kehers simply do not know hurling. DJ was a goal getter..... but first and foremost he was a play maker. his vision is what seperates him from the rest. some of the passes he made were pure mind boggling

DJ was an artist. He made people want to play hurling. Some people at the time were slow to understand his play especially from 97 on as he matured. He played on some average KK teams. I was at 99 final. His general play on a brutal day was very decent. Very scores from play as final score was 0 13 to 0 12. Regularly hacked at on and off the field. All agenda based stuff.

you cant be serious, DJ,. Shefflin, Tommy Walsh,etc. would lose him,Most of the scores he gets are from frees, now he's not bad but has a long way to go to be up with them.
They may come and go but there is only 1 D.J .Henry Shefflin , Tommy Walsh, Eddie Keher, not far behind.
If he was from cork he would still be playing :L

Was he better than Sheflin or Keher? I think Keher might be the best.....Canning could be the greatest yet ....but he has not the backing of a team like Kilkenny.

Yeah shame he only managed to win All Ireland's in 92,93,00,02 & 03(captaining that year), NHL's 90, 95, 03 & 05, Leinster 91, 92, 93, 98, 99, 00, 01, 02, 03 & 05 and All Stars 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, 97, 99, 00 & 02. He really doesn't have a good enough record at all.
