I enjoyed recording this at St David's Hall in Cardiff recently. One of the best Schubert songs, Erlkönig, arranged for piano by Franz Liszt. The lyrics written by Goethe, tell the story of a young boy and his father riding on horseback through the night, who are chased by an evil spirit.

I was fortunate enough to attend George's concert at St Davids Hall, this clip appears to have been filmed before or after. His entire performance was absolutely brilliant, making it one of the best Piano recitals I've attended at the hall, and judging by the audience reaction at the end, I don't think I was alone in thinking that.

Wow! I just know that Liszt made a solo piano version for this! Just the accompaniment alone is already so difficult! The more difficult when you have to play the melody as well. And you could picturized the characters according to the singing text! Bravissimo! 👏👏👏

Oh I love Liszt‘s piano arrangement of Schubert‘s ‚Erlkönig‘ so very much… and you dear George are putting the energy of these two musical giants together in your unbelievable interpretation which I love 💕 very much! I really cannot think of any other pianist completing the composer’s work and musically expressing Goethe‘s words …

I like the Liszt transcriptions from Schubert songs. They are very astonishing if you’re interested in „Lieder“. I am. It’s always a good encore in Germany. Another transcription I like is the song „Widmung“. Thank you for this George. Hope to see you at Wigmore Hall. And Frankfurt next year.

I have, since listening to your performance last night, listened to vocal performances of settings of Erlkonig by Carl Loewe (not terrible) , by Johann Friedrich Reichardt (stillborn), and even one from Beethoven's WoO works, completed by Becker, but I keep coming back to the Schubert (so many fine performances on RUclips, But Ms. Norman blew the other vocal performances out of the water), and the Liszt transcription.
Your performance is energetic and urgent, among the best.

Je découvre cette performance aujourd’hui….. et j’ai 2 ans de retard😅 - Liszt mélange souvent la passion, la virtuosité et l’improvisation, et ce n’est pas toujours facile de trouver le bon équilibre, mais ici sur cette partition très exigeante l’équilibre trouvé par le pianiste est parfait. Bravo!!!!
