  • @WXKFA
    @WXKFA 5 лет назад +199

    Jumping method has a flaw and that is your cat might not trust you to catch him if he jumps, that's why he's trying to climb. You already established with him that climbing is ok too. What you should do instead is to lift him and then give him a treat in so called final position. Do it enough times and eventually the cat will realise that being on your arms (when you assume the correct pose) equals a treat so he will jump to your arms whenever he wants a treat. It will no longer be a choice then.

    • @willworkforchocolate6331
      @willworkforchocolate6331 5 лет назад +13

      Maybe while still in the sitting phase, scooping your arms underneath him supportively as soon as he lands. Even with just one arm so that the treat can be held up with the other hand.

    • @leerwesen
      @leerwesen 4 года назад +4

      @@willworkforchocolate6331 Maybe having the cat jump up onto something, like a ledge, would work. That way you don't need to support them, and they can use the knowledge of "jump" to more than just your arms (like a bed, car seat, etc.)
      I taught my dog to "jump" by having her grab for a toy that I hold up high, then saying "jump" on walks when I was standing on something to get her to join me, then saying "jump" to get her to jump up on something when I stayed on the ground.

      was more difficult for loki because the man subsequently increased the height that loki needed to jump. there was increasing difficulty but not increasing reward in conjuction. when loki jumped on furniture behind the chair to get to the man's lap, that confirmed for me that loki didn't like to jump that last height. normal / steady lap height I think would've convinced loki

    For Loki, he's hesitant to jump onto your slanted lap. He knows not to use claws on you, and he can't see a safe place to land otherwise. Start low again, and every time he jumps up gently scoop a supportive arm around him. Then work on increasing height. He'll learn he's supported every time, and that your arm is a desirable place to jump onto. As it is, you're offering him no safe landing place (as far as he's aware) as your lap becomes more vertical.

When we got home I took him out in the backyard with my bag of treats ready to do training and he looked at me like" it ain't happening" ... and he would walk away and refused to participate. LOL

    I suspect that if you had introduced the "catching" part of the equation before even raising your height (maybe kinda lightly grabbing him once he was in your lap), that Loki would have felt more confident he wouldn't just fall when the angle of your legs got closer to a full stand. Great vid though! And your cats are too precious!!

    My mom loves cats. She was just diagnosed with late stage cancer a week and a half ago, and I’m trying to find things to make her happy. I’m learning violin and practicing piano and harp more. We’re doing a book club (I had like 50 books I wanted to read with her eventually, so that was pretty sad to put most of them aside). We’re going on a preemptive wedding dress shopping excursion when she’s having a good day so she can do that with me. But I want little things to give her happy moments, and since she loves the cats and we’re pretty goofy, I think she’d love being able to get a high five. Helps morale. “Even the cat is rooting for you!”
    This would be harder for my cat; my Bombay doesn’t really like treats! She likes wet food, some, but mostly the gravy on it. And freeze dried salmon is interesting to her, but like two pieces and she’s done. A single shred of shredded cheese is tasty to her, then she’s done. Maybe clicker training could draw out session length? But I dunno. I want to try it though. My Mom would just adore it if her cats and mine could do some tricks. She already loves that mine plays fetch.
    Thanks for showing the process, that it really requires a lot of time and repetition, and that sometimes you have to work around a problem. It’s really cool. I hope I can find a video on leash training that helps me with that; the kind that’s more comfortable to get my cat into, she just slinks to the ground and won’t move. And she’s been known to be able to back out of it, a disaster nightmare scenario if we’re outside. The lighter harness is complicated enough that when I’m done with it, she’s already nervous. And again, treats... aren’t able to be used just a ton with her. I bought so many kinds and handed them off to my mom’s cats because she didn’t like them at all, treated them as less interesting than dry food. So it’ll be an interesting problem to work around.

    Just out of curiosity, wouldn't Bill eventually learn, "Hey, if I give him a hi-five, daddy will leave so if I don't give him a hi-five, maybe he won't leave" because you taught him that hi-five equals you leaving therefore if he doesn't give you a hi-five, you'll stay?

    • @SohiHien
      @SohiHien Год назад +1

      If he does it for other situations during the day where he doesn't leave he won't associate it with that. Also leaving for work is part of the regular routine, Bill is used to his owner leaving at that time most days and therefore knows it is a normal thing and his owner will return later that day at a certain time. It doesn't cause anxiety since it is part of the regular daily schedule. And cats are super into schedules and routines. My cat has no problem with me leaving for work in the morning, he knows the morning routine and knows I'll be home around 5pm that day and waits for me then. If I come home early he is simply sleeping or maybe eating some food. Not anxiously awaiting my return or crying at the door. He is only upset if I come home hours later then I should. The high five before leaving will simply become part of the morning routine and means he gets a good pet before his owner leaves for the day.

    • @SohiHien
      @SohiHien Год назад

      @@janistp Well the idea behind tricks and behaviours is to ultimately have the pet do them simply for a pet/praise or just because they are told and not a treat. Treats are just used in the beginning to keep enough interest in performing the behaviour to get them into the habit of performing it on command. So it's great he could get Bill to engage without food being involved.

    This is exactly how I taught my cat, Baron, to sit, sit up, high five, and spin in a circle. However, he absolutely WILL NOT do any of those commands if there is no treat involved.

    first off, i neeeeeeever want updates from any app or youtube subscriptions.....however, i’ve just rung your bell 🤣. after seeing a few videos, you’re really hysterical and my kind of person 😉 my sweet kitty moxie, who passed a few years ago, came when i called her, was always in the room with me, and fetched fluff and bouncy balls. i now have two rescue kitties , both approx 2 years old. they follow me everywhere, but don’t like to cuddle and have zero interest in treats. one will allow me to pick her up to cuddle for a minute, the other is horrified to cuddle, but has come a long way as i’ve worked with her - she was totally abused. Do you have any ideas how i can get my girls to cuddle?!?! i’d love to talk with you. THANK YOU!!! oh, and totally adore both of them, but really love Bill!!! 😉

    The feral cat outside was very hungry. I started to feed it and gave it a heated water bowl and nice house on the porch with an electric pad in it. This cat was really staying well, helped and and almost happy. Star, was still young and I thought I could get it domesticated. My way of starting was to feed the cat and hold an orange scoop in front of the food. Because he was hungry he batted it to get it out of the way so he could eat. Now he bats my hand after I pour the food in his dish. So much fun. He still is a feral cat.

    You had Loki jumping to high off the ground before reinforcing that you were going to use your arms to catch him. Had you been catching him in your arms with each seated jump, then gone slightly higher and still catching him in your arms, I do believe he would have trusted your arms would be there on the highest jumps. Pretty good progress in one week though! Maybe he only needed 2 weeks for mastery.

    Really enjoyed this training session. One of the best parts is that it shows people that it takes time and patience to train. Also that you can have a failure but I bet Loki will learn that trick in time. Maybe not, he may not want to, but that's OK. I have a new cat about 6 months old now, still a bit on the ADD side but I'm going to use clicker training with him and I may try it with some of my older cats but they don't get too excited about treats so it may be difficult or not possible at this point. Will try and see. Thanks for this video.

  • @TheDannyHamilton

    Something you didn't mention, but might be helpful to others that attempt training of a pet is your use of a "bridging stimulus".
    Frequently trainers will train with a device such as a "clicker". Initially the "click" is given at the same time as a reward, and eventually the animal associates the sound of the "click" as an indication that something just-that-instant happened that will result in the reward. The "click" can then be used to mark for the animal the exact moment when the desired behavior has occurred, with some time delay happening between the exact behavior and the eventual treat.
    However, there is nothing special about the sound of a click. Anything that the animal can sense (see, hear, feel, etc) and which can be easily delivered at the exact moment of the desired behavior can be used as a bridging stimulus.
    In your case, I noticed from the video that you were using the word "yeah" (intentionally or unintentionally) as a bridging stimulus. You would say "yeah" at the exact moment that your received the high five or the cat jumped up, and then the treat would come very shortly afterwards. A bridging stimulus like this can help narrow in the animal's mind the set of recent behaviors that are being rewarded and can therefore speed up training.
    Also, I suspect that, if you don't continue training Bill regularly with positive reinforcement, the negative punishment (removal of something the cat likes) associated with the high five will eventually diminish his trained response and even train him to NOT give the high five. You are planning after all, in his view of the world, to abandon him for extended periods of time immediately after he gives the high five every day.

    • @TheDannyHamilton
      @TheDannyHamilton 6 лет назад +3

      For Loki, the difference between jumping to a lap, and jumping to hopefully be caught might have been too much of a difference. In terms you've used, the stimulus wasn't generalized enough, and the trained stimulus was specific to the seated position.
      To overcome this, it might have been help to train Loki to lump to a target (some easily identified object) on command. That target could have been used in MANY different locations and situations to generalize it. Then if the target was placed in your arms or on your chest when you gave the command, you could have used the conditioned stimulus (target with command) to condition a new stimulus (command with outstretched arms).

    Bill did his trick really well and looked like he enjoyed it. To be fair Loki had a trick that required more use of strength and energy (jumping up high) than Bill's trick of touching your hand with his paw. I think Loki lost interest in the amount of effort required to do his trick, not that he couldn't have learned it.

    I wonder why cats/dogs don't 'untrain' themselves when the treat is gradually removed - I mean, why repeat the behaviour if there is no reward? Or... is the positive reinforcement being shifted from the treat to praise?
    Also, I have two cats - one is treat driven and the other is praise driven. My treat driven cat is trained to 'sit' while my praise driven cat is trained to 'play fetch'. They both still get rewarded, but in different ways.

    • @paintedwings74

      Yep, one of the big challenges in science is to separate out what you THINK you're testing from what you're ACTUALLY testing. You can try to reward a kid for doing his homework by giving him ice cream or letting him play a video game; you can punish the kid for not doing their homework by removing the ice cream or taking away the video game; but if the kid doesn't like ice cream and would rather go play outside, it's not going to change his behavior either way.
