    I would like to see more parking lots get fresh paint. It's frequently hard to see where the lines are they are so faded. They don't care though as it would only cost them money, who cares if you can't see the lines is their attitude.

      I agree, there's so many parking lots where the owners just don't care about anything or legal liability.

    @louvre1981 5 лет назад +1

    Not too shabby, that is an older painter but your lines look good. A lid on that bucket will help keep your paint from drying on top. I prefer to do my cross hatch first, you can then go around the outside of it and do the box after so you don't have to wait for it to dry, that is unless you are going up to a curb with it. Also when spraying stencils, turn your orange tip guard 90 degrees, makes it much easier to spray them in. Cheers

    try using some chlorinated rubber paint, the good durable stuff, I think its one of the best, but bigger spray tip closer to 20. or they also make liquid cold thermoplastic paint, never seen the stuff. obviously these are commercial & most certaintly expensive options or much more rare for commercial jobs I assume & race tracks!

      +aaron fuksa chlorinated rubber paint is excellent i have used it on a few jobs. Most of my clients request the standard federal traffic paint to be used. Thats a good tip for next time i was just spraying it with a .17 tip before.

      Thanks so much! This was actually the longest it's taken me to get back to comments. I was away for 1.5 months on vacation travelling. I'm finally catching up to all my missed comments! We do step on the painted lines sometimes but most of the time nothing happens to the paint since we are using a fast drying traffic paint. You can walk on it about 15-20 mins after its been painted. Most of the time we are use to stepping over where we painted I can avoid the lines without looking. ;o)

    Jeff, I’m legally disabled and my wife also has a disability and we applied through the city to get a handicap parking space in front of our house. The city was supposed to paint a 24 ft long space when they stuck the sign in the ground.
    We have a lot of transient college students living near us who represent the majority share of Scofflaws Inc. who don’t respect our space or in many cases who aren’t aware of the legally defined space. I’ve been working constructively with City Council and other officials to get the spot painted so we don’t live in this extremely frustrating state of ambiguity.
    City says they can’t afford to paint it but might consider marking the curb with a small blue marking to designate the 24 ft Mark. The police are supposed to be enforcing the space but some do and some don’t... And I dislike the police knocking on our door wanting to talk about do we know who’s parking there... how do we get along with our neighbors... The police have been very nice and respectful but I think everyone needs UNAMBIGUOUS CLARITY WITH A MARKED SPOT.
    I’ve decided to paint the spot myself. I was wondering if you could offer any guidance when I’m ready to paint.
    We have inclement weather ahead but I’m interested in what type of paint dries the best while lasting a long time.
    I’m thinking of cutting my own stencil since they are a little pricey. I did well in mechanical drawing in shop class way back in the day and I’m a decent visual artist. If the materials to cut my own stencils are more expensive than buying commercial ones then I will buy a commercial set. I want to be set to do touch ups when necessary.
    I will check with the city when I’m ready to make sure I’m within code.
    Thanks for the video. Obviously my equipment will be much simpler than yours as my plan is to do our one spot and not a whole parking lot. I’m not going to use Hatch Marks as people will park in those as in the U.S. people don’t see them as what they are, part of the spot. However I would like for it to look nice as possible with some curb appeal.

      It must be very annoying trying to get the city to take care of these simple issues. I see this all the time and citizens spend their own time and money doing repairs when no one else does anything about it. So to answer your questions what kind of paint to buy? We use a traffic paint that sets very quickly. I normally use an oil based traffic paint and depending on the time of year it is either regular or low VOC to comply with environment laws here. Obtaining the stencil is your only challenge and of course if you can make one that would be great as well. Since you are doing it yourself it wouldn't be cost effective to buy a pail of traffic paint blue, white, or yellow etc. I would honestly use the coloured marking cans at home Depot etc. I've seen a few spots done by spray and it turned out pretty good! The blue you could spray or roll on of you are using the blue. Stencil, duct tape, spray cans and you could get this done cost effective. Hopefully someone takes care of it before you are forced to do so. Let me know how that goes and when and if you are going to do it yourself.

    I started painting lots a while back as part of my commercial maintenance business. I've only done a dozen lots so far. One of the issues that I'm having is spraying larger open stencils, like arrows or stops. It may be just that I haven't developed the skills in using a gun, but I have had terrible problems with puddling and runs. I have tried moving faster, higher, etc. Should I try a different size tip? Lower pressure? It's been enough of a problem that I've simply been rolling. But that is time consuming.
    Any suggestions for a novice?

    • @JeffLepard
      @JeffLepard  4 года назад +2

      I would first try a different tip size. Example would be if you were using a .17 tip and you moved down to a .15 tip that would solve that issue. I had the same issue when I was starting out. Also lowering the pressure could work as well. Thanks so much for watching!

    • @JeffLepard
      @JeffLepard  5 лет назад

      You would need to count up the parking stalls and any special stenciling work, accessible parking spots, hatched sections etc. That's how I formulate my estimates for these jobs.

    • @mikel9567
      @mikel9567 5 лет назад +2

      Use linear foot as your base price for stripes. Stripes are typically 4" wide so come up with a base price. Figure out the average size of a parking stall and it will be easier to quote. Curbs, stenciling, etc will have their own pricing . What works for pricing in one area won't work in all areas so asking people to tell you what you should charge is fool hardy. Also need to figure in other aspects of the job. Are you going to pre clean the lot? What about crack filling? Minor repair work? Lot of money can be made but you can also screw up too. Parking lots aren't roadways, they don't have universal standards like the MUTCD to follow. Property owners sometimes have strict requirements. Especially national chains like McDonald's. So be wary of that too.

      I will make sure to do some new videos on my new channel for angled parking. Make sure your subscribed to that channel where all my new content is uploaded now. I use to switch my gun over but I stopped doing that it takes too long. What I do is just get whatever I can and if there is a few feet of missing line I will tape it up and complete the line. Most of the time I can get in there but sometimes I have to do that.

      Victor Hernandez I personally have never used it but I heard all about it. A paint you heat up to at least 200c and it's applied hot and when it cools down it hardens up and remains flexible.

      @@JeffLepard, Bummer... looks like a solid, quality unit. I bought an old school nitrogen line painter at auction that I've been slowly piecing together as it came incomplete, only spools up to about 80 psi on a 2200 psi maximum tank (I love that it's almost silent - but... it certainly has it's limitations). What is recommended commercial pressure for quality penetration into the asphalt, concrete or hardscapes in general? I'm based out of Alberta Canada so from your videos I'm pretty sure you have no cause for concern that I'll be coming after any of your markets? Also this is a fun project, my main gig is actually asphalt trucking, snow removal and parking lot sweeping so it would be pretty easy to offer the service to customers that are already using me in the other arenas.

    First of all turn the pressure up and paint faster your losing money just by how long it took to do that. Secondly you should never roll a blue box that looks ridiculous. Also it should have taken you 3 sprays to paint that handicap stencil. Not 35. That stencil is probably soaked after just one box.

      This line painter is an older model and doesn't have the pressure I really need. My new videos will have a new line painter and lots of pressure. It will make for much better videos in the future. I will probably keep this old line painter to spay the blue. Thanks for watching!

    At 8:19 you mention something that dis-values PWD. You said "NORMAL" parking spaces. The way you put this it makes it seam that it is not a Normal thing to be Disabled. To a PWD Person With Disabilities it is a "NORMAL" thing to park in a blue zone. What you said is Normalizing PWD. For example, you say to someone with a disability; "Why don't you get some exercise and Walk like a NORMAL Person"? That is what Normalizing a PWD means.
    - You need to be giving the proper dimensions of the parking stalls & the Hash Marks.
    - The standard minim ADA Parking space is 8 Foot wide.
    - Van Accessible ADA Parking space is 11 Foot wide.
    - Access aisles/hash marks are a minim of 5 feet wide.
    - A minim amount of ADA parking spaces per hash tag to (2) accessible parking spaces. If there is only (1) ADA parking space there still has to be a hash tag beside it at a minim.
    - The vertical sign must be in front of each ADA parking space and located in the center of each of them. The sign must be from the level of the wheels of the vehicle to the bottom of the sign must be a minim of 60 inches.
    - Number of ADA parking spots per business/service even if they all share the same lot must be 1 in 6 spaces. If there was 2 businesses and they shared a parking lot and each business had 6 spaces per business there would have to be a minim of 2 ADA parking spots for the entire lot.
    - If there is a ADA parking space and there is only 1 for the entire parking lot that space must be a VAN Accessible spot.
    - It should be more? I wish the minim was at least 2 out of 5 spaces in a parking lot?
    Good Video other than that part. The information is just a few suggestions of what would of been good if you would of mentioned.
