    Great video. I like to see the reality of struggling to free old parts. The brake drum slide hammer is a neat trick. Gary

    I loved your video, and the fact that it showed how hard it is to work solo. I dismantled mine about a decade ago and I can't figure out how to assemble it, so your video is very helpful.

    The axle can be simply removed without disturbing the brakes. The holes in the axle flange provide the access. The backing plates can be, and should be removed with the brake parts undisturbed.

      I know that, but I comply disassembled the rear for cleaning, seals, brakes, and paint.

    Would it be difficult to remove the limited slip and add a Eaton Trutrac to the Ford 8"? Should i extract the bearings and replace them? Mine looks like it from the early 60's but in good shape.

      I don't know. The Eaton has its own carrier as far as I know so I don't know if it would fit in place of oe Ford limited slip or not.

    Thanks for the real world break down. Hate it when I watch something and the poster edits all the challenges and makes it seem like a piece of cake. Then you do it and are like WTH? lol

    BAM! It's apart. We are at the same point in disassembling and reassembling a Ford rear axle. Mine's from a 91 Mustang and is going into my 51 Ford.

    I had to use a washer hose clamp to compress the spring detente that holds the parking brake cable inside the backing plate. Couldnt do it any other way, but once I got that idea, I had it off a minute later! Beats pounding on it!! LOL!

    Do you have to take the brakes apart? I was told you have to for a Ford 9 inch as well. When I went to do it on my 9 inch I never needed to take them apart. I have Another car with a Ford 8 inch that needs a little servicing and I wonder if you could do the same by just slipping a socket through the holes in the axle hub

      You don't need to take the brakes apart to pull the axles. That hole in the axle flange is to access the flange bolts.

    Great video! I'd have never figured out about the washers or removing the axles first! I'm wondering if you can add posi or change the gear ratios with these?

    • @QuickSpeedShop
      @QuickSpeedShop  4 года назад

      Yes you can do both. A limited slip differential and different gear sets can be changed in the carrier.

      Thank you! Yes I watched a video where they converted to 4:11 posi. There are kits available, but it is tricky.

    @6:42 there looks like a gasket or a flange hanging from the axle housing. What exactly is that ?

    • @QuickSpeedShop
      @QuickSpeedShop  4 года назад

      It's the end of the emergency brake cable.

      QuickSpeedShop the piece that looks like a shim?

    • @QuickSpeedShop

      @@samvv5982 At 6:42 I'm removing the wheel cylinder and the pins that push the shoes. I guess I don't know what you see as a shim.

      @@QuickSpeedShop my apologies! It is at 9:16. Is it a gasket?
