- Timberframe Pergola- Tree to Finished Product! Thanks for the support Woodcraft! www.woodcraft.com
I have my mind set on building another tinyhouse, but this time, I want to do it RIGHT, so I figured a great project to practice on would be a timberframe pergola for my new ONE TON wood fired brick oven. I built an outdoor kitchen, garden, and farmhouse table for farm to table dinners for my homestead in Seattle, but finished the project just a week before I found out we were moving across the country, so this was my chance to do it again. Cooking outdoors has always been one of my very favorite things, so an outdoor kitchen on our homestead is a must. This brick oven weighs almost a ton, so the structure had to be strong enough My friend Greg Pennington used his sawmill to help me dimension the rough sawn sassafras lumber we needed for this project, then we cut all the joinery with a circular saw, timberframing slick, and put it all together with some pegs turned on the lathe. Timberframe construction requires far less accuracy and precision than fine woodworking, so this is a great way to learn how to build incredibly sturdy structures with fairly inexpensive building materials. This woodworking project is an easy way to learn basic woodworking joinery like mortise and tenon joints, half laps, and drawbored/pegged joints. Learn how to timber frame with a simple project like this, the same concepts here apply to building timber frame sheds, porches, or timber framed cabins (can't wait to build that next timber frame tiny house!!!). Wood fired cooking is an incredible way to move towards off grid living and sustainability. This is so much more than a pizza oven, I used my wood fired oven in Seattle to cook steaks, bake pies, breads and cookies, cook fish, roast veggies, and so much more. If you want to make a pergola or project like this of your own, Plans are available on my website, formulated to use dimensional lumber from a big box store. After this build, I'm off to pick some food from the garden and fire up some delicious wood fired pizza, I'll see you in the next video!

Nothing better then fresh cut lumber. I wish I had that kind of neighbor.
love the Rusticness of the home milled wood

I love your videos! You are truly a renaissance woman. You build, you craft with hand tools, you garden, you have animals, you cook, work with other craftspeople, you make videos, you bring it all together and share it with us with your awesome personality, and on top of all that you're married. You are absolutely inspirational!
Well done Annie. We sure do miss you around here!
Thanks Tommy! I sure miss you too. Excited about this next season for you guys ❤️❤️❤️
Glad you moved the collaboration content is awesome
I’m pretty glad I moved too :)
That women has some serious skills in everything she does. Lovely Chair.
Welcome to our side of the US. I hope you're ready for the climate LOL! I grew up in Central KY and lived in the Nashville area for the better just of a decade. Have been asked more times than I can count how long it takes to get used to it and my reply had never changed... You don't. You learn to live with it. You sweat like you're in a sauna ½ the year you freeze for about ¼ and the rest is nice LOL
That’s not been our experience so far, we love the weather here. It’s a big improvement from where we came from. Yeah, we sweat a little more, but life is all about the attitude you choose to have.
Anne Thank you for telling me that WoodCraft answers questions for you! I went there today and asked how I should finish a very old rocking Chair that was old when my Mom and Dad bought the cabin back in 1956 when I was 5 years old. After my Dad died my Mom who has also passed away sold the cabin. The new owners didn't want anything from the cabin that is how I received the rocking chair. Wood Craft was kind enough to tell me everything I need to do to make it last another ? of years. What I had thought to do was not in anyway right well at least not 100%. Ralph at the Bloomington, MN store really told me not just what to use but told me how to put it on to bring it back to it's glory. Thank you Anne of All Trades for tell us about WoodCraft. I'm now in the system and couldn't be any happier! Dave Dickson from Bloomington, MN
David, thank you so much for taking the time to send this, that is EXACTLY why I'm so proud to work with an awesome company like Woodcraft. I'm glad to hear your rocker is going to get the love and attention it deserves to keep those precious memories alive.

Beautiful build!
You have my respect for pursuing your dream and combining you love of all things making and building a life/community.

Jim Stewart thank you!!
Another great video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Very nice!
Ohooooo nice 👍😁
Great looking stove
Thank you!
brilliant work.. thanks for sharing..
Thank you! Cheers!
that is the coolest brick oven pizza "house" ive seen! and its impossible for anyone to steal it at 6 thousand pounds, might even be tornado proof. and would look awesome if you take a propane torch and burn all the woodgrain to make it pop and also adds rot resistance
Shousugiban is a great finishing technique, I’ve used it on lots of projects, ruclips.net/video/bjsNPX_Ucnk/видео.html though this one is gonna stay wood, that is the traditional method for Timberframing, it would lose some of its beauty and luster with a finish like that
It was enjoyable and educational for me to watch the saw mill and then watch you do all of those huge joints by hand. Thanks for posting this. Stay safe.
So glad to hear it!
So glad your move wasn't from house to house, but from one home to another. This is what makes America and our vastness the best country on earth, the quality of our country neighbors.
Try to achieve anything like this in any inner city...
People are what make any place a home. Country living is wonderful, but I will challenge you on your last point, we moved here from living in the middle of the city, and we had a wonderful community and support system there as well.
I used to buy a lot from Woodcraft in Woburn, MA. Back then it was the owner and two employees. It's a great place to shop or just browse. They were great people - it was almost all hand tools - this was in the early sixties. Luv your videos.
Frederick Fyfe thanks so much! They remain a great company, though they’ve grown some :) I am so thankful for their support, but more than that, they are just a great resource for so many folks
Flipping awesome 👍 📐+🔨+🍕+🍺=😁
Too cool...and I LOVE that chicken at the end! LOL :)
haha those little buggers are always getting into everything.
This was a really great video
Thank you!!
This is awsome! Over the summer I worked at a company that designs and builds timber frame homes. Its such a cool proccess. I love to see these techniques put to use in structures of all scales like this
Incredible project and one that included skill from many different people, what a treasure!!
Thank you for switching from sandals to proper work boots. My internal "safety dad" was in full alarm mode!
that's the problem with shooting "real life," sometimes you don't notice what you're wearing until your Sunday best is covered in cow manure or you're operating a chainsaw in flip flops, but folks watching will always notice.
@@AnneofAllTrades Hey, I'm not judging. I grew up on a farm in SE PA, raised to where I should have known better, and yet put rusty nails through a sneaker sole more than once.
❤️❤️👊🏻👊🏻
Super cool!
Thank you!
Great Job. Always better the second time around. While many people buy their lumber from the BIG BOX store, you should promote the old time Mom & Pop lumber yards. They are the one that will be there to help you when you need that special wood for a project.
I absolutely support small lumber yards, but also want to make making things accessible to those who don't have access to them ;)
😯 wow. This is so cool. I’m glad I came across your channel. I can imagine your life being a good story to tell children someday 🐱
Thank you so much! That second bit is the ultimate compliment.
Girlfriend....when I grow up I want to be just like you!! 😃👍 (lol...I'm 52!!🤣) This is AMAZING!! ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!😃💕
Thank you so much! It’s never too late to do the stuff you want :)

Just to let you know, you are truly missed out here in the Pacific Northwest. Looks like you are thriving there though. Love the content.
Thank you so much! Yes, we do really love it here, and are thankful to have landed in such a great spot with so many incredible neighbors
Awesome outdoor kitchen. Great project. I also love the quality of the video. Effects, editing and cinematography are well done. Nice job Anne.
Thank you so much!! That means a lot more than you could know, because it was our first go at making a video like this without any outside help. My friend Josh and I learned how to use all the equipment and software in the span of a week to make this video happen and it was well worth the effort!
You need a sawmill!! You do EVERYTHING else. April and Matt can help you BUILD one!!
I do, but for now I can just go to Greg’s :)
The things we do for Pizza - Pizza is King!!!!
Haha pizza and a whole lot else too!
Good to see you switched from sandals to boots eventually. Great project, great video.
Hahaha I just have to rustle some feathers every once in a while
Love how you went with the old mortise and frame. More old barns i. This Country were built this way. And many are still standing. Thanks Anne
We want the things we build here to last longer than we do :)
Love your boundless energy.
haha thank you. It definitely has it's bounds, and this project tested them, but it was a fun project no matter how sweaty and tired we were at the end of it.
Love it! I've worked regular stick framing all day long and know how tiring that is, I can just imagine how much more so timber framing is. Well done!
Thank you!!
I was so excited to see what you were making with the timber framing technique! Awesome project! Thank for taking us along!
So glad to hear it! Next up, timberframe tiny house! Though Adam is being a spoil sport and telling me I have to wait till the shop is built 🤪
Greetings from Ireland, better in the video than in the oven :)............keep up the great work.
Thanks 👍
Safety 101! You can wear flip flops in wood workshop😀
Anne that's going to be a awesome outdoor cooking area thanks for sharing take care stay safe god bless
I’m excited to see it develop! Lots more fun projects for this space to come!
What an awesome build
Thank you!
That is a humdinger support for that oven. You did good. I like the chicken checking out the camera.
I think it will hold ;)
Community building is incredibly important. I have some ideas and goals to that end forming in my mind for my community. Watching you inspires me to do what I can here in missouri to accomplish those fledgling ideas rattling around in my head.
That makes me so happy to read! ❤️❤️❤️
@@AnneofAllTrades I saw your video with your husband he reminds me of my wife, she is better at keeping business stuff on schedule than I am and she keeps me grounded.
You and Greg built a great piece of timber frame for that oven. That's super cool and amazing. I hope the pizza tastes as good as the whole setup looks!
thanks so much! I'm sure it will :)
I re-subscribed to your channel!!
Cheers from Arkansas!!
Welcome back!
I noticed you went from steel toed sandles to boots... smart move
hahaha those sandals see a lot of OSHA situations ;)
Beautiful work. Love the rustic style Now a swing made to match would be awesome
Time for a cuppa I think
Haha definitely!!
Wow what a pizza oven! 🤩
I love your energy and enthusiasm for woodwork and your hopes and outlook in life for wanting to build a good life with long lasting community relationships. I am finding my love for woodworking and crafting and I hope too, to one day have my own home, awesome workshop where I can play and creat and be apart of a great community. Thanks Fred!
That thumbnail is amazing! Great video too, of course.
Thank you!
thank you Anne . well i been eating for a long time too
EXCELENT ANNE , ANOTHER GOOD PROJECT TO MY LIST , THANKS SO MUCH 👍
Thank you!
8:55 chicken pizza, yes!
Great work! Thanks for taking the time to make, film, edit and share.
Thanks for watching!
Sweet! I was wondering if the pizza oven hadn't made the move as you had only just made the stand. This stand is a LOT more impressive and also more in keeping with the massive oven and the way you like to work - using wooden joinery instead of screws. It looks awesome!!! As always, nicely played!👍
Thanks!
Awesome build Anne , simple and strong 💪💪👍
Thanks Mark!!
@@AnneofAllTrades 👊👍
I Love It! Beautiful Job👍
Thank you!
Sampson boat co if you want to see precision wooden joints.
Or any of my fine woodworking videos as well, I’m all about precision when it is needed, but when it’s not, we aim for perfection but don’t let it impede progress.
Awesome video! Love the timber framing pergola, really suits the site. Now I am hungry for pizza!
Me too!!
The intro Chicken is looking directly at your lapel mic - possibly thinking "I didn't agree to any voice over" or more likely thinking "is that food?"
hahaha exactly
I installed a wood fire oven this year and to be honest, pizzas are the least common thing I cook in them. If you decide to cook a whole meal with two to three pans, you won't regret a large oven.
Best of luck
We had one for the last two years in washington and that was true for me as well, if you’re interested I’ve got videos on cooking steaks, baking pies, cinnamon rolls, and a whole lot more in the wood fired oven in my RUclips archives ;)
@@AnneofAllTrades Yes I'm always looking for new recipes, I'll be sure and check them out
That slick’s big as you are. I really enjoyed yalls live stream yesterday.
Haha it doesn't take much for anything to be as big as I am :) Thanks for joining us on the stream!
Amazing project, I'm looking into building a pizza oven in my backyard.. Looking so forward to it!
Oh you’re gonna love it! Good for so much more than just pizza too!
That is a lovely pizza shrine you've got there!
(also have to love the chickenphotobombing)
Thank you!
When the chicken pecks you on the blooper reel. Oww, LOL
Haha happens all the time
Now that is an Abom-sized chisel...
“Surfacing and scraping a timber framing chisel”
Free pizza for life... Greg you are a lucky man!
Greg got tired of worrying about those sandles and let her some boots :-D
Greg never worries about anything, I’ve never even seen him wear safety glasses, and I wear kid’s size shoes so Greg wouldn’t have been any help there.
Did you bring it home on the roof of your golf cart?!?😂🤣😄😃
Hahahaha now THAT would have made for good television.
Why did you put the floor joists on flat instead of upright which would add more strength? Thinking a shallow dado in the carrying beam would hold them and would also reduce the amount of material removed from them.
You missed a pretty integral thing there about how the floor joists work, the timbers are square and the only piece you’re seeing exposed is the joint portion ;)
@@AnneofAllTrades your right I did miss that, my apologies.
Great job you too. Is a roof coming next to keep the rain out of the Pizza Oven ?
Sure is. As well as a giant farmhouse table. Timberframed of course ;)
This is very inspirational. I am currently gathering materials for a brick pizza myself. I was worried about the base because I do not have much experience with masonry. This just might be my answer. I had a question about the ground posts. Did you poor concrete footers or gravel or anything under the legs? Seems like with that much weight that guy would have a tendency to sink! Especially in the rain here in TN. 😅. Love your channel btw.
So glad to hear it, thank you! No concrete needed, we made up a sturdy base pad prior to setting the timbers on it.
“Did I mention these are really heavy?” I got a hernia from watching
Hahahahaha rest up and ice a lot ;)
Anne of All Trades I need a timber framing woman! You must have some friends... I’ll gladly be her laborer... I’m not too proud! I need to build a nice, strong house, for myself and my little boy. In all honesty, it’s so expensive, but I would love to learn the trade.
Carbs Baaad
No way. Carbs are great. The fad diets in the US the past 30 years have spread way too much misinformation about food
@@AnneofAllTrades don't wait too long to discover the diet we have been on for 70 years is the fad diet. ps love your vids
@@Castor364 thanks! Everything in moderation does the body, mind and soul well ;)
Got to laugh a photo bombing chicken..haha
Always there for the giggle
Have you checked out the Out of the Woods channel? He’s in Tennessee, too.
Nate and I talk often. When the pandemic clears up I’d love to do a collaborative project with him.
One thing all of us lefties have in common is "we are always right".
Haha true.
Is it the height off the ground (allowing the air flow) what keeps the structure from getting too hot from the oven?
The oven is extremely efficient, even when it’s been running for days at high temps, it’s still cool to the touch on the outside, so the structure is never in dsnger
beautiful design and execution. can you send the soundtrack link? it is very cool!
😊👍👍👍👍👍👍👋👋cooooooool
Thanks Gib!
Dont forget to oil those timbers for the best longevity.
It will get oil and a roof, but it’s sassafras, so it’s already pretty naturally rot resistant 😉
@@AnneofAllTrades I was wondering about that. What kind of roof will you put on it?
141poolplayer Onduline, I want all the roofs of all our buildings to match :)
@@AnneofAllTrades That will be nice.
The pizza oven did you buy or build it? Please & Thank you. If bought a link?
There’s a link in the description ;)
Looking forward to some videos on pizza in the new oven!
If you’re impatient, ruclips.net/video/NC80tziDmFI/видео.html ;)
Nice work Anne👌. I'm curious if this was seasoned or kiln dried after sawing or put together green.
If you cut it and join it right green, it actually shrinks together as it dries which makes the whole structure stronger.
Okay first, awesome video. You just can’t watch your content and not smile. Second... tinyhouse #2 :) ?
Oh it’s definitely coming. Adam wants me to finish building the shop first, but I’m not sure I can wait that long. This time, it’s gonna be two floors and timberframed. I cannot wait.
Cool project but wearing sandals around the mill and in the shop is a bad idea. Glad to see Anne switched to boots eventually.
These videos are made about my real life and they reflect that. Safety is always an important consideration but real life happens. I’ve built half the furniture in my house in sandals or barefoot 🤷🏻♀️
I know this is going to sound odd but I just got the mental image of cinnamon bacon rolls with an apple butter glaze on top. Little bits of bacon in each turn of the roll. I've got my mind in the BBQ and bacon gutter
I think I know why they call you Bacon...
@@AnneofAllTrades oddly I don't eat bacon as often as I think about it. Occasionally I'll hear bacon on my work radio when I'm watching TV
Anne check out Shelter Institute they teach timber frame construction.
🙌🙌😙😙
Curious, did you draw bore the pegs or are they actually trunnels?
I love it , do you deliver ?
Haha only as far as my trusty golf cart can take me
@@AnneofAllTrades yup straight to the airport haha
Noob to timber framing so random question: does it have to be green? Is the idea that it’ll tighten as it shrinks?
It doesn’t have to be green, but it’s great when it is so it shrinks together :)
Make sure to pair your first pizza with a mason jar of wine. ;)
Also A GREAT over to roast CHICKENS... USE A thermometer to check doneness. Of course..
Brine some Yukon Golds n salt water first just for 15 minutes then bake em..
Anne, how long was that log aged before you milled it?
A couple of months, but it could also be fresh cut. Timberframing works green/wet because the joints shrink together as it dries
