Like you say in your video , you always dreamt of arcade quality games at home. What I found was, though I liked the games, it was the friendships , competition etc that made gaming so great. This couldn't be replicated at home.
I got the top score on Godzilla pinball at my local arcade today. What a rush!

Definitely it was the impossible dream in the 80's, seemed like forever to get there at the time but realistically, we got there so fast really, great days!
I do get where you're coming from there yes
      Well done you....that's awesome 👏
Also awesome you have a local arcade👌👍

It always seems to me this is one of the best things about old games from this period - the fact everyone had a shared journey to some extent, but everyone has their own individual tapestry of systems and games they owned. It means everyone has something in common but something unique to say. What’s funny in your case is that you owned everything (except the dominant 8-bit micro, the CPC) and so the answer to ‘what was your gaming journey’ for you is effectively the same as “what were all the systems that came out” 😂

    • @retroimportgamer513

You're exactly right there mate, we were all involved in some way but we all forged a slightly different path and experience, I find that really interesting and love hearing people's thoughts
I was lucky to have most things yes, never had any experience of the 464 though no so I obviously missed out on the greatest start I could have had on my gaming journey 🤣

@retroimportgamer513 I've had a very similar gaming journey James, though I maybe started a bit earlier with an Intellivision and a lowly 4 games for it lol 😅
Remember your shop and really enjoyed popping in and seeing some of the latest games and consoles you got in. Do seem to recall your father being in the shop with you, remembering one day I visited, am sure you were playing FZero on the N64 😊.
Bought some cracking Saturn and Dreamcast games there thanks to you, appreciated.
You were even kind enough to source me some import Daytona 2001 and Shenmue II for Japan Dreamcast, which I still got in my collection.
WiiU I bought at launch, and it was mostly ok, a shame about the lack of support, suffered in the west much like DC with no real western developer or publisher support, particularly shocking that EA mostly shunned the WiiU .
Later we got the Switch, but only about a month before Mario Odyssey was out.
Cracking recap of your gaming history, ATB mate 😎✌️

You're always a pleasure to listen to in your videos. I was born in '73 and enjoy modern gaming more than retro. But I like watching yours and the other Retro Gerth-Gang for personalities and takes on life more than anything else.
I understand if you're not interested, but if you want a masterpiece platformer that is nothing but great colorful fun worlds with many retro homages, then you really owe it to yourself to get a PS5 and play AstroBot. It is a next level experience with the immersion technology in the controller while giving any 3D Mario game a run for it's money in excellence.
Even if you don't keep the PS5 (you should) Def get one and try AstroBot within the return window. Try it and then return it if you don't like it.
But I wager it might restore your faith in modern gaming.
If it doesn't, then explaining why would be a good topic for a video.
Another great entry. Looking forward to the next one. 🤘

You were born in a good year and lived through the best of times in my opinion
I must admit, Astro Bot looks great and hear loads say it's awesome. I do like the ps4vr one and it would certainly be the first game I would buy for a PS5 if I ever get one, I think when the price point gets lower I might take the plunge to be able to give that and Tekken 8 a go, I just can't justify £500 odd quid for two games at present 🤔👍

Great journey mate! I'd never even heard of a PC Engine back in the day, I'd have sold everything to have one if I had, loved shmups back then and PCE is king as far as I'm concerned when it comes to shooters! I never really owned any non mainstream stuff when it was current, but I've had a few 3DO's from car boots over the years, loved Need For Speed on it, was shocked how good it was! I became a bit disillusioned with gaming too for a while, real life just gets too busy sometimes! A few years back I didn't touch a console game for years, I was hooked on Pokemon Go, travelled all over the place with my dog for a few years catching imaginary creatures in random parks :D! I can't get on with XBOX names either, my daughter has owned them all but I couldn't tell you which is which :D! I think a lot of us are maturing into just collecting the great stuff nowadays, full set collecting is fun for the challenge but it's kind of like reading a good book, once it's over it's over!

    • @retroimportgamer513
      @retroimportgamer513  2 месяца назад

Thanks mate, yeah I agree, I enjoyed chasing a full set but once there it kind of felt, what am I gonna do with all that crap now🤣
I agree, the PCE is a brilliant console for shmups, wish I'd hoovered all the games up for that when they were dirt cheap, had a decent collection once and sold it for pennies 🤣
Life does inevitably get in the way at some point for sure and it's probably good it does really to give you some focus
I never got into Pokémon so never had to lurk around in parks🤣👍

2:59 I also started with A Speccy And you're right it was the best 8 bit computer, So many great games , So glad I had a double Tape Dick get a blaster back then to copy games on 😂 I also didn't know anyone with the NES Back in the day. 9:32 I agree with you the mega drive is one of the greatest ever made, I went from the spectrum To the MD , So it was a huge step up, I agree with you a 100% the 80s and 90s were the best Time ever And things have been going down hill ever since 😂 You're right the PlayStation was a game changer, James it sounds like you owned every console released in the 90s😂 I agree with you When games became dark and Gritty with too much realism It's really put me off gaming for a bit And And The Wii Brought it Rap for me And the funny thing is I didn't really buy that many new games for it But I downloaded it a huge amount of Retro And I believe that's where the nostalgia bug really began, Yeah xbox names are stupid 😂 I also never bought the modern consoles at launch, It took me 3 years to get a PS4 And I still don't have a PS5 But probably gonna Pull the trigger on getting one this Christmas, Fantastic video James You've definitely had a few more systems than I have over the years And it's great hearing about your journey

Thanks for sharing, mate! i thoroughly enjoyed that, it's alwats interesting to hear about your journey, nostalgia, and thoughts.
Again, you literally say things that i've been saying for years! i.e not wanting realistic looking stuff/wanting the escapism of sega worlds, the colours, the music, etc!... 💯👏 also, playing the dc at home truly was the arcade at home! although i thought that playing capcom fighters on the saturn. But playing house of the dead 2 at home was an indescribable feeling, i was literally laughing in disbelief, and this was when i still lived near seafront arcades!
Also, being a hardcore sega fan, i guess gaming was never going to feel the same after the dc, as we know, sega left the home market, and we never got that next console 😢 ... although, inteesting to hear your thoughts on the wii, and how got you back into retro. I always saw the wii as a sort of spiritual successor to the wii.
I'd love an episode on your shop, mate, so interesting! keep up the goid work, mate! 👌👍

HOTD was and still is fantastic isn't it, still great to fire it up on the Dreamcast
A few people have mentioned an interest in hearing a shop episode, I have been thinking about it and how I could do it as unfortunately have no pictures or video of it so think it would only be a talking episode like this one really 🤔👍

Absolutely! it was certainly a golden period of gaming for me, joint with the 16-bit era, but different. They were very exciting times for me to scan the import releases, phone the import shops in London, and then make the mission in to score the latest capcom fighters! I still lived near the arcades, and my mate worked on c&vg magazine at the time. Awesome times, I'm forever grateful to have the memories of that time (amongst many), as you also mentioned. 😃🙏👍
Yeah, i saw in the comments, others are also interested...Aw, such a shame you don't have any photos or video, mate 🫤 it will still be really interesting to hear, though, so, I hope it happens, and look forward to it at some point, mate. 🙂👍

we used to meet at the arcades and go back to either house for extended sessions! I also used to get the mag before they hit the shops sometimes! 😃👌👍 I haven't been in touch with him for years, now, though. Also a kid that went to me school, a year or 2 below me (I think), and that used to skate(board) with a crew of us bitd, also went on to work for c&vg! so weird to think now!

Enjoyed the vid James. It's great hearing your gaming history. It's cool knowing you owned a game shop during the 90s. I'd be interested in finding out about your experiences during that time and what ultimately led you to shut down.
I remember the Mega CD being expensive and I also felt it wasn't getting the support it needed. Of course I jumped into getting a 32X without doing the research and I paid the price. Still, I did enjoy the two games I had for it.
I've been enjoying my ps5 quite a bit lately. I really like how smooth the UI is compared to the ps4. It's still very much a glorified ps4 pro to me but given the ps4 backlog I have I'm not too bothered. If your ps4 breaks down then I totally recommend getting a ps5 over another ps4 as there are a few quality of life improvements.

I'm seeling them at the minute🤣 I hate these modern war games like COD and anything that is based on "realistic" violence its weird and s**t. theres is absolutely nothing in modern gaming and zero creativity. I had an Alpha on order but cancelled it due to not having the cash and wasn't sure where I could put it, watched a few vids on it and I definitely like one, I'd ordered the SF one because the cab is more neutral to look better with the different marquees but prefer the games on the Megaman one and the cab looks nicer IMO, reckon it wouldn't look so good with the different marquees though 🤔.
