  • If the "TikTok" bill is accepted and the company refuses to sell, the social media platform will become a thing of the past for the USA. But, what does this mean for the sewing and embroidery community? Let's talk about it.

    I'm of the opinion that nothing is straightforward with the passing of laws and that there's always a rider in the small print that will inflict adverse, unforeseen consequences. In short, I don't trust politicians. 🤷‍♀

    Although I am all for kicking many of these aps to the curb for various reasons, I'm also of the mind of 'if they can dictate what I can use whether it be for marketing or buying material, what else is the government going to suddenly restrict? If they can restrict what is dubbed a "social media" app, will they soon ban Social media as a whole or will they put even stricter laws in place as to who I may and may not do business with or use to market my own business? I'm always wary of laws, even if they sound like good ideas at the time.

    I don't buy, sell or otherwise interact with Tiktok. Think the videos sometimes show up on RUclips and will watch those occasionally. Had heard people sell stuff on Facebook, I'm not a Facebook user so not absolutely certain. Would be sorry to see small businesses impacted, hopefully people start looking for other platforms right away.

      I'm not much for social media either. Hopefully, small businesses will build back up on another platform.

    I think the whole point of the proposed ban is to force the sale of the platform to another US company in order to further strengthen the social media monopoly held by a very small handful of billionaires. It’s less about our perceived safety and more about control. There is absolutely no concern about teen safety on FB or IG, which are arguably just as damaging. It’s much more about who controls our access than about the content.

      You make an excellent point.

    I’m ok with a TT ban. I’m also a fan of a Temu ban. I’m sorry if it will negatively affect you, but the negative effects it has on our youth and society, and potentially our nation’s security, outweighs your point (imo obviously). I also have a hard time with Temu because it just has to be using slave, or slave like, labor.

      I've never used TT or Temu because I always worried about security. I don't have an issue with it staying or leaving. However, I do know many small business owners will be impacted.

      @@ThimbleBook I agree! Small businesses often get the raw deal, but hopefully if it does happen, what will come will help them to be as successful. Windows always open when a door is shut.

    I’m more concerned with having adequate safety than access to TikTok. If our country feels there could be a potential threat using TikTok, then I vote to ban TikTok.

      What’s the threat that goes away if “American” companies sell that collected user data overseas anyways? The threat seems to be to THEIR CONTROL over the populace, not a threat to the population itself

    • @pamm2230
      @pamm2230 6 месяцев назад

      @@healgoth Exactly, it's about THEIR CONTROL. Almost every other social media platform has sold or allowed your personal data information to go to another entity and we don't know the identity of those entities.
