I love the choice to have Kingpin use an interpreter to communicate with Maya. It reflects how he has all of these resources at his disposal while also highlighting how he cares about Maya enough to invest in her usefulness but doesn't actually care about her enough to learn sign language like family would.
This is exactly what I interpreted as well
One of the coolest things in daredevil is that he showed Madame Gao he speaks Mandarin all along surpassing his interpreter. If they did that it would be really cool. I didn’t like the glasses thing at all
whats funny is how maya acknowledges it in episode 4 or 5 i think
@@hokage1997 Yeah, episode 4! Haha, I reached that episode last night.
D'Onofrio as the King Pin really was a great choice for the MCU. It will be interesting to see if the MCU does have him battle Spiderman and really push Peter Parker to his limits. Have both sides forced to utilize their own resources just to end up in another war like endgame but at the street level. But make it a trilogy or tv series. Have Spiderman be forced to team-up with Bernthal's Punisher or Daredevil just to takedown King Pin.
The beginning of the episode caught me off guard.
Fr it made me so sad
@@_JoyfulNoise_I think they were talking about the weird alien people
I was not expecting alien full frontal from marvel even on TVMA lmao
Native Americans are not aliens. It’s clearly their origin
Same. But I’m also wondering if there was a subtle reference to “What If?…” and the blue glowing “water” that transported them to Earth.
I’m part Chickasaw tribe from southeast Oklahoma and to see representation of the Choctaw tribe done so well is absolutely incredible, such a rich history that deserves its time in the spotlight!
Same, I’m also Chickasaw and I’m shocked how much it took place in Oklahoma
I'm from the Siksika Nation in Canada. To see natives rocking Hollywood, to have representation is so great, I was getting emotional, and that's why representation is important.
@@shiloc009Okee amskapi pikunii Blackfeet here 👣👋
I feel the same. Kwapa nation from Arizona. I watched this with my sister (first cousin spent most of my developing years with) and we both cried bc we both love marvel and watching one of our people have such good representation.
5$ Indian don’t count 😂
Loved the Daredevil cameo/fight scene!!
Quick note for Jessica: Clint kills Maya's father during the Blip, as that's when Clint was active as Ronin. So mu h of the adult Maya scenes, (minus the present day of Hawkeye) take place during the blip as well. So Daredevil and Kingpin both survived the snap.
The blip is people returning, the snap was them vanishing
No the snap cause the 5 year blip there reason is called that because even doe it was 5 years to them it felt like 5 hours
I enjoyed the cultural and spiritual recognition in how the story was shaped. I also liked the gritty Daredevil feel of her story. “Stickball” is really Lacrosse, which was an indigenous sport that has been incorporated into college sports as long as I can remember, so there may be quite a few people that recognize the game. Good job breaking down episode 1 so quickly!
Besides the recap of episode one, did anyone else find this series pretty fun and surprising. Lived the sign language which made me pay more attention to everything and biscuits was awesome
I absolutely agree, I genuinely loved it, the entire series. Unfortunate there were only five episodes. The first episode was one of their strongest they’ve done imo. I really hope we get to see more of Maya in the future
It was trash stop giving praise to trash so Disney can wake up and put effort into making their shows that we pay for
Also worth noting, they mirrored Daredevil in the final scene. The first thing Matt heard after being blinded was the drip of his IV. It's also the first thing Fisk hears when he wakes in his Hospital Room after being blinded.
😮 Wow. You're right
Has anyone mentioned that the spiral at the beginning of the episode looks a bit like the inner ear. Like the cochlea or something idk anything about this but I feel like maybe there's a connection between that first scene and ear stuff. Loved the episode though and I'm excited to continue watching
I thought it looked more like an eye, specifically a blind one
ALL DAREDEVIL + DEFENDERS SHOWS HAVE BEEN ADDED TO THE DISNEY + TIMELINE ORDER
a lot of the elder native american actors (Maya's granddad, grandma and father) played in Netflix's Longmire series which is how I know most of them and their acting is top tier.
It was also pretty much all the actors from Reservation Dogs 🤙
They’ve been in plenty of native movies all acted phenomenally in each one.
6:05 my favorite subtitles moment from this episode is that when the grandparents are off camera grandpa says to grandma - "I love Your peaches"
I loooove seeing my indigenous people represented in the MCU. I got teary during the Pow wow scenes. So authentic feeling
Just finished all 5. WOW!👏🏽🤟🏽
Absolutely
I noticed Vincent is wearing makeup and prosthetics to make him look chubbier
Because he's really skinny now
Wait.. Kazi was Maya's childhood friend?! Oh man, that makes his betrayal even more heartbreaking. :(
I am deeply impressed by how quickly y'all put this video together. Well done!
(Big channels get to see it before regular people so they can go-ahead and make these videos. It drives more engagement to both the channel that made the video and Disney+) (no hate at all, it makes sense)
Edit: these videos take SO MUCH time and effort. Getting them out in three hours is…. Possible… but not really the case. The big networks see the engagement and views. They give early access so the videos can be posted right then :) there are agreements signed so they cannot reveal anything prior to it being streamed. It makes a lot of sense and I’m happy for it. I’m glad that I don’t have to wait days or weeks for Easter-egg breakdowns :)
They got screeners of the first 2 or 3 eps a couple of weeks ago. Still, they did an incredible job.
The first time i saw the beginning, I thought of 1/3 possibilities:
1. The Hand from the netflix series, exploring the street level supernatural stuff.
2. Echo’s version of the Noor so to speak.
3. Then I saw the tribe’s transformation….that’s when I realized “The what if episode wasn’t a one off! It was intentional! Yes!”
Meaning they were bringing representation for many of the native american tribes that existed centuriee ago and bring awareness to them. Which got me so damn hyped.
I'm a quarter Blackfoot Native American myself.
This episode was phenomenal and really got me emotionaly with it's opening. Our cultures tell the first people coming from inside the earth, creator comes from the stars.
ONE QUARTER!! wow, that's almost the same as....nothing
@@JPIbanez84thats thanks to colonization 👍🏽.
The grandfather is on Twilight too he’s Harry Clearwater and the “goddess” from the beginning was Leah Clearwater. I guess the pool for Native American actors isn’t huge it’s not a massive surprise that two properties needing a lot of Native American actors would have a lot of overlap.
Love the oner fight scene. Absolutely brilliant.
all the cinematography was great
@@spiritbombing I agree
It was silly
I loved all the care to details the director did in making this.
I just finished watching all five episodes and although it has a lot of flaws in my opinion I really enjoyed this series! It has plenty of cool action moments and a lots of other amazing stuff! This is the most vulnerable we saw Wilson Fisk. This made me realize he's truly a broken and emotionally battered villain which is why he's always been one of my favorite villains in the entire MCU since Daredevil!
Name some of your lots of flaws
Did they say who bought avengers towers?
@@cram2979Rushed up ending.
They just degraded Fisk at the end.
Zero percentage character connection from many people like Bonnie, biscuit, grandmother, Fisk's handyman, etc.
It went from a solid 7.2 to 5.9 at the end.
@@Finn-wj9nji 100% agree with you. I feel Marvel has been losing it in the 3rd Act/Finale’s of their shows/movies lately. (Not including like 2/3 movies/shows).
That oner (which was about four minutes if I recall) literally blew me out of my chair and oh boy, just when you think it's over, Daredevil pulls up and it was so good (probably my favorite fight in the MCU since Cap vs Winter Soldier on the highway)
Jessica did such a great job with the research!
I ECHO that!
"American sign language" wait what?
@@sikhumbuzokngwenya4164 yeah American sign language
Other places have different sign language. There is British Sign Language as well, for example.
Hey Jessica, Julia Jones, the actress who plays Chafa is also another Twilight actor 🙃
Such a phenomenal first episode.
I'm just loving the use of Native American culture and storytelling in the Mcu. I hope that there's more of it in the future.
I’m a aboriginal plains Cree from Canada and absolutely like how you explain the lore and the episode absolutely PERFECT makes wanna go watch the episode again😯👍
One didn't have to do with the other
So that’s why little maya look just like alaqua 😂😂
Their cheeks and innocuous yet dark glares! It's so uncanny
This show is easily one of my favorite Disney Plus series. It was so good. I loved Maya’s interactions with Kingpin. The music was amazing as well. Hopefully we see her in Born Again.
Glad your feeling better jessica great review as always 🎉.
watched all Five.. loved it.. love it love it love it... can't wait for more Marvel Spotlight content
This is awesome, I am apart of the Kiowa tribe and my dad, love to see natives getting some respect!
I LOVED IT
I'm loving this show! It's so damn smart and fun. It's slow, but I love the slow drama.
Also love how nearly all Cops immediately respects the King
Bird enthusiast here! That looks much more to be a yellow bellied sapsucker. Red headed woodpeckers are a different species, then you showed a picture of a pileated woodpecker, with the caption "scissor tailed woodpecker", which is not a real species.
So cool! ❤
I think it's a red-naped sapsucker. Take a look. Def not a red headed woodpecker or a pileated woodpecker as shown in the video. Only thing is, those two sapsuckers not not native to southeast Oklahoma. Still soil to see some bird focus!
THANKS, Jessica!!!! Glad you're back (?) doing these! Loving what I'm seeing thus far (I'm in the middle of E4 as I type this).
Right…. I (?) it too 😂
The mound site believed by Choctaw to be their origin is called Nanih Waiya.
i love a jessica clemons breakdown!!!!! but i also LOVED this episode of Echo!!!
I loved every single bit of this series!!!
It just started… 😭
@@jacobcorona1824 there's only like 3 hours of it. Easy binge
Lies
I mean i just finished the series. Its 5 episodes not that hard to binge
@@jacobcorona1824homie the entire series was released today.
Ok big stretch but remember in guardians when Ayesha said that humans shared common ancestors. Here chafta glows gold after drinking the pool of water… think that’s them glowing gold could be connected to the sovereigns being gold? These would be the original people right?
did you not watch the 3rd movie? the sovereign were created by the high evolutionary.
@@Greenhawk4 naw I haven’t seen it… damn there goes that theory lmao
Hope this is the beginning for more Native American representation in Hollywood
Same! Meegwetch Niigi!
Does Prey count? Also maybe just watch more movies

I’m Chickasaw Indian. Chickasaw and Choctaw were once the same tribe that split, I can tell you that it pronounced (Chalk taw)
extra easter egg Tantoo Cardinal (Chula) and Graham Greene (Skully) played a married couple in Dances with Wolves in 1990 ❤
Glad you're feeling better!
I'm learning more about Native American histroy from New Rockstars than I ever learned in school! Great work Jessica and the New Rockstars teams!!!!
Finished the show. I appreciate that They wrote a strong character who is female not a strong female character. Great set up for Daredevil born again. 8.5/10
Outstanding breakdown! You did a wonderful job on this! Looking forward to more analysis from you!
Imma need that skincare routine Jessica!!❤
you're glowing! 😊
jess this was such a good video! i feel like you did that gritty work it was soo good!! i am loving maya!! that leg hold before hitting daredevil😩😩😩
Daredevil hands are rated e for everyone
Ayo 😂
Hey Jess! Welcome back!!!! GREAT JOB QUEEN!!! THANK YOU FOR COVERING THIS 💜
Glad your feeling better🎉🎉
I watched the first three episodes in really enjoyed it so far! I've also enjoyed consuming a new culture through the medium of superheroes.
After watching all five episodes, I definitely enjoyed the first episode the most
Does anyone else agree that they could easily do informative short videos about different subjects involving history and what not?
Awesome recap, Jess!
I've seen a couple reactions to echo this morning & this is the most n depth & accurate 1 on indigenous people..thank u
Dope episode. Dope coverage. Thank you!
AMAZING SHOW! I LOVED THE WHOLE SEASON! just finished it!
This was a good series. I like the idea of Marvel doing these sort of one off's. A nice deep dive into single characters. They could do stuff like this without worrying about larger MCU connections.
So happy that Jessica is here to guide us.
Thank you Chafa, your energy and attention to detail is spectacular
Jessica... Sorry, wrapped up in the story
Wow! Stellar job!
Great job as always, Jessica!
I really enjoyed first episode
So much it was great really digging the series so far especially the moment with mya family, and how her ancestry play into things.
Great BD Jessica, thank you. ❤
Great job Jessica u really went all out
Appreciate your hard work.
Thank you Jessica. You killed it again!
thank you for sharing resources for people to educate themselves on the Indigenous history, it's super important for people to know whose lands they are on
Great work Jessica… I love Echo after only watching the first episode…
Oooo! A shout out to the Royal BC Museum in Victoria, BC? That's where I'm from/live! Been there many many times in the past 40 years.
Great work Jess!
I binge watched last night, had no idea about this character but I feel in love! Cool character. Action was really good.❤
My dad grew up in hartshorne ok. We have loads of Choctaw fam. Super rad to see all this in pop culture
Anyone mentioning if you have headphones on while listening there is defintely a constant beat in the background like a heart beat. Jessica mentioned about heartbeats in the beginning and you can hear it.
Well done
As a native of Oklahoma, I am glad we're getting so many shout-outs from Marvel between Echo and Loki S2.
I really have a genuine appreciation for you, Jessica.
echo was really standing on business fr
Great video
The series looks awesome I am really enjoying it
Ooh, nice call on that being Chula biting the stick.
Jess KILLING it!!
Great series I enjoyed it very much
Very incredible is how it teases good action and story then it’s nothing and lacrosse where of course the smallest wins vs the giants on the other team.
So, one thing I haven't seen anyone comment on, is that Biscuit is left-handed. It's a relatively miniscule detail, but you can tell because in sign language, you use your dominant hand for any one-handed or non-symmetrical signs (I'm also a lefty, so I notice these things!)
I really really enjoyed this series and as someone who isn't from The States I'm looking forward to learning more about the tribe featured in the series ❤
Hey Jessica!!!
jessica you are simply the best!
Loved the series 🔥🔥🔥
First ep was awesome. Glad I already saw Hawkeye to grasp the connective tissue between the jump scenes.
Awesome
Glad to see you on your own here!
Did anyone else see Disney Plus put Daredevil and other Defenders on the official MCU timeline??
I so love this series 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
This show is amazing!
beautiful imagery in this show. i know next to next about native american myths and legends, so learning a bit of the Choctaw creation myth was super interesting.
that fight was fire though
glad your feeling better again Jessica 🎉
Phenomenal series
