Good evening, I am 68... a former student. I thought that I could study Karate again. I just happen upon your Full Tutorial video. You have a very amazing way of teaching and execution and demonstration of each of the Katas. You took the time to point of each critical Key element. You ensured that we you pupils have time to comprehend movements. Respectfully,
The camera rotation that you do at certain points throughout the kata is helpful. I have not seen other instructors on youtube do that before, but it improves the quality of the instruction.
I know you have a lot of people who like your “reacts to” videos, but I’ve never seen any of the things you are reacting to, so it’s reall nice to see some karate content again 🙂 Your form is really wonderful, and your explanations really clear.
2 dan Shotokan. Havent trained in 15 years since my Shihan moved away. Nice to have videos like these to brush up on my knowledge. Planing to get back training soon. Oss
The difference between Shukokai and Shotokan for Godan is pretty immense. The rest are fairly similar with the odd tweaks and slightly different footwork. Thanks! Helps remind me of the ones I'm less sure on ☺️
Dear Nagano San. Today is April 14, which means, I wish you all the best for your birthday. Thank you for your great teaching. Your faithful student FREDO from Hamburg, Germany.
I enjoy seeing the differences and similarities of the kata. I am currently working of the Okinawan series of these kata (Pinan) and the movements differ quite a bit from how I learned it in TKD (Hyungs). The way I learned these in TKD are almost identical to Shotokan. My TKD instructor was very open with the fact that the art comes more from Shotokan than other arts.
Thank u very much sir ..i am a purple belt and i have belt exam tommorrow. I had confusion in 7 and 8 kata .even my karate teacher couldnt teach me that nicely. Thank u again✌🏻
im 34, i used to be in shotokan. the instructor moved. now i have an achilles injury. after watching this, i think once i have surgery or whatever i need done.... im going to go back and self teach. i enjoy this style. i was a green belt once upon a time.
How is everyone now? i stopped training for a few years after getting my blue belt but now started again. My next kata is godan but I am not trying for any gradings for a while, I need basics, basics and more basics for now. This is great to see as some moves are not the easiest.
Thanks for the videos! I just watched your Heian Shodan tutorial and then found this. I love your attention to detail in explanations. With my INTP personality type if parts are left open to interpretation too much I am in perpetual doubt that I am practicing wrong and eventually give up. In 2012-2016 I was living in Bangalore India and worked my way up to Bassai Dai following along with Paul Walker's videos (Shotokan Sensei on RUclips) and the late Hirokazu Kanazawa's videos for inspiration to model my movement after. I am 60. I have been off for 8 years, was very sick for a long time and now am starting again with the Taikiyoku series and Heian Shodan to get moving again.
thank you so much......the terms, detailed movement and speed of teaching is awesome! I will use this to improve myself. As an adult learner, I need to learn as much at home as possible because the class is faster. My daughter and I got our orange belt this week.
Very much looking forward to this. I've recently joined a Shotokan dojo after having studied under Shito-Ryu for over a decade. The kata has some variations and so this will be particularly of interest to me!
I took my blue belt long time ago. I practice with my last son just to be in shape. But let tell you something, this is the best tutorial I have ever seen. Excellent…your students should be very proud of you.
I'm learning Tekki Sandan for my 3rd Kyu grading in August, and every week at our Academy, We go through all the Heian Kata before we get to the highest belts Kata (in order) and you wouldn't believe the amount of time I practice Heian Kata... to forget it when it gets to training nights xDD Your content is awesome! Thank you. Osu.
Nagano-Sensei, I am really grateful for this video, that is probably the one I revisit the most, to make sure all my Heian is in order, checking details and even reminding me of them, when I got a while without practice. São Paulo, Brazil, green belt here (aiming the purple belt soon). Revising Heian before training to get Jion, God willing. Doumo arigatou gozaimashita.
I guess next on my list is to dig back into the shotokan history and figure out where this reverse kime is coming from. Snapping the body backwards for a straight punch shortening and weakening it just to make the do-gi snap is relatively new.
Ok, so in tis video is described a proper way to execute oi-zuki. I feel it the same way in kata, when punching a makiwara or a heavy bag. No reverse kime, just pure human body bio-mechanics: ruclips.net/video/isVAI4hN5wY/видео.html
I don’t think it’s snapping the body backwards, it’s snapping the rear hip forwards. The power is coming from the rear leg, forwards through the rear hip pushing through, not the lead hip snapping back?
You are a great teacher. I used to take kajukenpo when I was young but quit because my teacher was very mean. He was similar to the teacher in The karate Kid, I wish I had you as a teacher!
Really i don't know how to thank you for this beautiful video because you took me to a golden time in 90s when i was a child training my best martial art karate.thank you very very much

After you read Karatedo Kyohan 空手道教範 by Master Funakoshi, you realize the style has changed so much thanks to JKA. For example, there was no Kankudai, Kankusho, Bassaidai, or Bassaisho. It was just Kanku and Bassai when Funakoshi was alive. And then JKA added a bunch of their own kata’s afterwards. So many people practice JKA and think it’s traditional Shotokan. It’s not.
Sensei thank you so much for your informative videos I just started karate and your videos help me practice at home if your ever in Hawaii and need a surf lesson let me know
I was same moves but different timing. for example first 2 moves you show is one move and one breath down block step and punch all one move...Way done here. Was ald way and was changed by head of NAFK years ago
Hello bro. Your vid’s are very educational and for a basic learner their just on the right place. Not to complain but as a suggestion, tho, your zenkutsu-dachi’s back foot is kind of lagging behind, leaving the side of your back foot hovering a bit off the ground. Sometimes you’ve dragged that foot quite a bit. As I understand karate in every style is an interpretation of the biomechanics of applying force by actually gripping and pushing from the ground with your feet well planted on the floor, toes facing as forward as your flexibility can allow and transmitting that lock through the stretching of the leg while pushing through and with the hip on the side of the same back foot. It makes for even more firepower and accuracy on your strikes and any other “kime” when you clench the buttcheeks too. Trust me bro. Just add a little bit more twist to your back foot and plant it firmly facing forward, the power is incomparable. First degree Goju-Ryu, First degree Shotokan, and Second degree Ryukyu-Kobudo. I’m looking forward to your response or maybe even a video if this clicks in anyway. Thx for the vids! Very instructive for many people!
