Great FT-101E radio repair. These radios just keep working and working if a little TLC is used. The plug in boards make repairs easy and lots of parts around from unrepairable units. You are remembering correctly my friend. That is just what it does. The switch in this radio is fairly easy to disassemble. But you can only do a few times before the little fingers break off. When all is dialed in correctly they're not only superb sounding SSB performers but it's AM audio is awsom! I'm assuming an online search can substantiate how many were produced and sold (millions?) No matter how small and highly advanced HF's become there will always be those who don't mind having to spend 5 minutes tunning them up in order to get them on air. Truly a peice of HF history that's still highly sought after. And those buying them aren't doing so in order to put them in a cabinet so that they (the 101) can be admired behind a peice of glass. Hello.... I have the same model Transceiver that was given to me by a friend who smoked heavily and lived in, let's say, not the cleanest environment. Needless to say when I took the cover off to inspect the internal boards and such I found a ton of dirt, dust and tar and nicotine coating the entire inside. Obviously it needs a good cleaning, any advice or direction would be greatly appreciated. I know some boards can be given baths in certain solutions but I'm not sure about everything in there. Any books, links or advice? Thanks in advance.
If tubes test good and voltages on the tube sockets and plate test good. What are other posibilities of low output. The rig was working fine. Sat for about 3 weeks. Now only 20 watts out. Thanks for the great videos. You have helped me a lot in keeping my old 101 going. Thanks Roger KW4EMF
Great video! This has helped me understand more about the FT-101. I recently was gifted a FT-101E from a fellow ham and I plan to restore it. It was last used in 97 and was working then. I will watch your 101 playlist to see what I can pickup. But I thought I would ask you, do you know of a reliable source to get a power cord for an FT-101E? I see some on Ebay but have had people warn me on the QRZ forums not to buy them from Ebay. Also, do you suggest I look for anything specific before I try to power it on? Someone told me to use a variac and raise the voltage in stages over and hour or so to condition the electrolytics since it hasn't been powered on in over 20 years. This is my first rig with tubes in it, so I know to be careful, and it creeps me out, but they're such beautiful radios an should be on the air. Any tips or advice is welcome. :-)
The Radio Shop, My FT-101E transceiver mic gain isn't working properly I have to turn both D104/101-E gain to they're maximum for the microphone to work properly. I changed out the battery in the D-104 but I still have to keep them at the maximum position. Do you know what the problem is. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
hi there i have a yaesu ft 101b had it stored under my bed 4 months fired it up waited 4 minits and smoked blow a capasiter still switches on can i replace the capasiter or will i need a new transformer
Dear sir, what 6js6c tubes equivalent are recomended for finals replacement? My originals are still o.k but i would like to stock a pair! GE? Sylvania?
I was curious to see if you have done much work on Galaxy radios. I just bought a dx99v and have noticed intermittently the frequency will drop to around 24MHz and turning knobs will make it change back to the correct freq. Was wondering if maybe a crystal may be going bad or something along that line. I really enjoy your videos and am gaining a little bit of an education in the process. I understand Galaxy is a touchy subject for some but I have always liked them personally. I want to learn more.
I finally got around to taking the covers off this galaxy and seen some "mods" have been done to it. I found the info i needed to get it back to normal and plan on trying to work on it soon.
Capacitors block DC voltages and pass AC voltages. So if you wanted an amplifier circuit to not have stray AC voltages bouncing around then you typically have a capacitor to ground. I don't know tubes, but if this was a transistor amplifier then the capacitor I speak of would be attached from emitter to ground. Also you would have such filter capacitors between two stages of amplification so the DC voltages don't back feed and blow up your transistor. Correct me if I'm wrong Buddy! I'm young and still learning.
All tubes have some stray capacitance between elements. That can couple the input to the output in a way that can cause the tube to oscillate. Neutralization is about canceling the effects of that stray capacitance.
So, wait...does this mean you wont restore my 1975 Kraco 23 ch CB to its glory? It only has a little rust on it...it got it when my 4X4 got stuck in the high tide at the ocean...I mean, it's a priceless mid century almost antique, shirley its gotta be worth 1K as is right?? JK! Great video as always Buddy...except for the trippy flashing knob thing! :) 73' my friend! ~Jack, VEG
I have seen mention of some kind of bias setting or neutralization or something on high power amplifiers with the Tx tubes out, but it seems like maybe they substituted something for the tubes temporarily. I would guess maybe a high voltage power resistor and capacitor(s) to simulate the Tx tubes to allow adjustments without risking the big tubes but this is just a guess. Do you have any hints on what this process might be? Sorry for such an unclear question but the people who do it seem to keep it as some kind of secret.
the cold neutralization is the same thing. the interelectrode capacitances of the tube are still there its just not emitting because there is no heater voltage.
Man I have one of these receives great 5 watts output tubes are new plug is in the back I haven't got much hair left to pull out if some one could help that would be great.
@@TheRadioShop *_Does that mean the wire cut makes or stops it from working on 11 meters? I had a FI-101E in 1975. I have a FT-450D now. I loved that old girl. Sorry I sold it!_*
You know what would be amazing? If someone made a video of using the cold neutralization method using just a second receiver, and actually DID it while they were making the video the same way you just did it with a scope!! Not EVERYBODY owns a scope. And...the cold process DOES work with an external receiver. It just seems like everyone is scared to make a video of it. Funny how it seems that all the most handy things you may need, though they may be unconventional, can't be found on RUclips. Hmmmm....interesting.

Hello, I enjoy watching your videos working on the Yaesu FT 101s! What I would like to know what is your procedure for customer repairs. I have a 101EX that I bought off of eBay, the radio is in EXCELLENT condition, I would like to get it repaired? I forgot to state the problem: the radio has no sound, I would like to also get it realigned. Thanks
Good as new! Great work
Thanks Bob
Thanks
Roger

Could you use the same procedure to neutralize the final tides on a Kenwood TS 520s?
Never got an answer
Would that cold neutralisation be the same on a FTdx560, I have low power out?
The Radio Shop,
My FT-101E transceiver mic gain isn't working properly I have to turn both D104/101-E gain to they're maximum for the microphone to work properly.
I changed out the battery in the D-104 but I still have to keep them at the maximum position. Do you know what the problem is.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Have a FB Easter, Buddy.
hi there i have a yaesu ft 101b had it stored under my bed 4 months fired it up waited 4 minits and smoked blow a capasiter still switches on can i replace the capasiter or will i need a new transformer
Might try this on my Tempo One.
Cool deal. Just make sure your final tubes filaments are not on.
Maestro!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dear sir, what 6js6c tubes equivalent are recomended for finals replacement? My originals are still o.k but i would like to stock a pair! GE? Sylvania?
Great video, Thanks
I was curious to see if you have done much work on Galaxy radios. I just bought a dx99v and have noticed intermittently the frequency will drop to around 24MHz and turning knobs will make it change back to the correct freq. Was wondering if maybe a crystal may be going bad or something along that line.
I really enjoy your videos and am gaining a little bit of an education in the process. I understand Galaxy is a touchy subject for some but I have always liked them personally. I want to learn more.
I finally got around to taking the covers off this galaxy and seen some "mods" have been done to it. I found the info i needed to get it back to normal and plan on trying to work on it soon.
i need to look at a transformer change on a yaesu ft101b can you supply a video thankyou jason
Hi from Orlando Florida
Looking to have my 101 EX Serviced, Do you do this for the public?
Thank you.

What brand tubes did you use as replacments
These were Sylvania supplied by the owner
My ZD needs to be neutralized because I changed the tubes, can I use this cold process on my rig?
When you neutralize a tube, do you mean the capacitor shorts out the transmit tube so it doesn't oscillate when you're in receive mode?
Russell gave a good description below.

Understood. Thank you.
I have a FT101 which needs service. Where are you located.? Can you service?
So, wait...does this mean you wont restore my 1975 Kraco 23 ch CB to its glory? It only has a little rust on it...it got it when my 4X4 got stuck in the high tide at the ocean...I mean, it's a priceless mid century almost antique, shirley its gotta be worth 1K as is right?? JK! Great video as always Buddy...except for the trippy flashing knob thing! :) 73' my friend! ~Jack, VEG
The brown wire mod was to make it xmit on 11meters.
What to do if bias voltages are off?
My search for C13 cap gave poor results. Where do i get one?
You can replace wit ha 82 pf 1 kv silver dip capacitor., Newark, RF PARTS, JUST RADIO carries them.
Thx sir, i value your advice. Does C13 replacement affect tune of the radio?
Man I have one of these receives great 5 watts output tubes are new plug is in the back I haven't got much hair left to pull out if some one could help that would be great.
Vinegar salt solution sounds like pickle juice.
Yep, pickled my switch
cutting brown wire allows the radio to be on 11 meters or C. B. if you will !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ho was can I get in contact with you I like to send my yeasu ft 101 to you
Hello buddy do you have any yaesu ft 101 ee for sale
Hi BigJohn, Sorry I do not, in fact I am looking for two more myself.
@@TheRadioShop they are getting harder too find in good shape I dont want no Ebay junk 73s KE0SXR
@@bigjohn3139 Agreed. Most on ebay are others failed attempt at repair.
Please let me know if I can send you a nice Swan 350b that needs some love. I want to keep it and see it working would make me happy :)
Subliminal messages from 13:40-14:05?
Ha Ha, someone finally caught that.
@@TheRadioShop *_Does that mean the wire cut makes or stops it from working on 11 meters? I had a FI-101E in 1975. I have a FT-450D now. I loved that old girl. Sorry I sold it!_*
relay still didnt seat just right i think bud
Os correios precisam serem terceirizados
You know what would be amazing? If someone made a video of using the cold neutralization method using just a second receiver, and actually DID it while they were making the video the same way you just did it with a scope!! Not EVERYBODY owns a scope. And...the cold process DOES work with an external receiver. It just seems like everyone is scared to make a video of it. Funny how it seems that all the most handy things you may need, though they may be unconventional, can't be found on RUclips. Hmmmm....interesting.
Why are your hands so dirty is your other job as a mechanic?
At work I handle a lot of parts for inspection. Most of these are soaked with hydraulic fluid. Even with gloves the sharp castings cut through them. Plus I handle lots of cardboard. Also very dry skin. No when I am home and not in the electronics shop I am in the garage. Just this past week pulled a tranny from a Ford Explorer and tore down a engine from a 1947 Minneapolis Molene tractor. Gojo makes a lot of money from me. I have been seeing a dermatologist but lets face it, I work for a living lol. .
Why always ist this brown whire cut ....XD
*_I'll bet it has something to do with 11 meter operation. Early FT-101Es had that 11 meter slot as this one does._*
I wonder if you would consider checking my 101 ... Like you have done to this one ... and making such payment arrangements to your satisfaction, and communication arrangements over the phone ... Mine is in similar good condition ... It does work, and transmits ... What ever needs working on, I would like it fixed ... Your consideration would greatly be appreciated ... rgkulig@gmail.com ...To arrange over the phone communication ... Thanks ... Perhaps you could make another video working on mine ...
I owned an FT-101EX and an FT-101D and I was not impressed with either.I see them as very overrated and overpriced. You could not give me any of them.High maintenance radios as well.
We can say that about any radio on the market. In fact it has been said. The biggest problems with the 101 series is a lot of these were screwdrivered to death by free banders.
very helpful thanks Mike
