A great video, thanks so much! I would love to be part of the drawing for the Heathkit VTVM. I used to have one on my bench years ago and I would love to bring this one fully back to life again. Thanks for all the great info across your videos, best 73 and good DX

Consider this my entry for the meter! I watched your video on the curve tracer and am taking your advice and posting instead of replying to your comment as I had already done.

And unless I over looked it, I haven’t seen any video you done yet on the Kenwood Twins.

Thank you very much Tommy. Much appreciate that comment. You are correct, I have not produced any videos on the Kenwood twins. Not many folks around here have them. And shipping is crazy. But I do have a set coming. Hopefully this month. So sometime in January I will feature a repair on the twins.

I've had meter needles get "stuck" upscale after dropping a meter onto a hard surface; you can wipe a dryer sheet across the face of the meter case and that will dissipate the charge holding it up and let it return to proper operation. Thanks for the video Buddy and good luck to the lucky recipient of the VTVM, an analog meter like that is still a great piece of test gear on the bench...Happy Thanksgiving to all! 73 - Dino KL0S

I hope the repair on it will be as easy as your FL-101 ! You had a lot of good pointers for me to look at ! I just got done working on a Drake TR-4C . It needed 4 new tubes that I bought at the Findlay Ohio Ham Fest last weekend and a few other small parts too get it up and running ! I have 3 Tempo Ones and this FT-101EE of my own ! I try to repair tube radio's for my friend's . Thank you for the You Tube's that you have put on my computer for me to watch . They do help when I run into problems !!

Good job Buddy I always enjoy your videos. I have never won anything except the draft lottery back in the late 60's. I was number 19 and 19 yrs old did 4 yrs in the Navy. I grew up during the Heathkit heydays and had a VTVM I built as a high school lab project. Somewhere through the early years someone borrowed it?? without returning it. I have since purchased and restored multiple pieces of Heathkit, Sencore, Leader test equipment. There is nothing better than the inside smell of old vintage electronics. Keep up the good work and excellent videos!!! Good luck to the upcoming winner!!

Hey Buddy, I have thoroughly enjoyed your videos and have learned a lot by watching them. The last 14 months I have been out of work getting chemo treatments. I officially finished my last one on November 12 and have been called cured. It was a long 14 months but I used the time to learn all I could about restoring and trouble shooting mainly old Heathkit tube radios. Your videos have been very informative and helpful to me. Just wanted to says thanks. Also if you could place my name in that drawing for the VTVM I would appreciate it. Thanks and 73, KJ3V, Lynn.

Hi Buddy great video on the Yaesu FL 101s, Those are sharp looking. I still find it fascinating that Hams once had to buy a separate receiver to monitor the band you're working! Wows, I don't see that happening again anytime soon. I'm glad that there are still people like yourself repairing these old gals and showing us newbies how it was. I'm still learning to restore AA5's...lol
I would also compliment you on your generosity regarding the Heathkit giveaway. I already own a very nice Heathkit V-6 which I restored and calibrated. They are great meters to have around, and surprisingly accurate, but I don't need a second one.

Poor meter is now BBQ. I wonder how (not why) the paint wrinkles up on the Heathkit VTVM.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.

  • @fredskalski3601

Thanks Buddy for another great video. I always enjoy them. I think though, that I would have checked the meter for movement before getting into it. I used to be a service tech at Heathkit in Benton Harbor and that is one of the first things you did when you had no meter movement.
The Heath VTVMs are a great addition to any test bench and they are usually not very much money. Hi input resistance does not load down the circuit under test and tuning with a meter movement is easier that with a digital! You don't have to enter me into the drawing though as I have two Heath VTVMs that I use quite often.
Keep up the good work Buddy and I will keep watching.

I would love to win the meter, My favorite part is it needing alittle work so its like a mini kit. All of my equipment with the exception of one item, I have built from sub 15 dollar kits or with scavenged parts removed from garbage . It would see much use by me. Thank you for doing these drawing it gives people like me a small chance of getting great equipment. Though I have never one anything in my life I try to look at it as my chance of winning gets higher for everyone I don't win. Thank you again Buddy for sharing your knowledge and experience. Way back in the early 1970's, I was in 7th grade and the electronics teacher gave me an older version of that meter out of his junk box. Hi Buddy, please enter me in the giveaway of the Heathkit VTVM. I started working on vintage radios over a year ago and I’ve been looking at Analog VTVM’s recently on eBay. It’s great to get a chance to win one!
I have a digital meter but I’ve found that sometimes I really need to have the sweep of a analog meter, that’s why I’ve been looking for one just like this, I’ve actually also been looking for a Heathkit because you can learn so much with them as well as use them. Everyone needs to know it’s a big deal, you giving something like this away. These are actually expensive on eBay. Heck, everything Heathkit has gotten expensive on eBay it seems. Thanks for the giveaway and your Home Page Forum, I’m Buddy#2 and I’ve found it really valuable. Also I really enjoy all of your videos. I’m in Florida and I kinda feel like we a kindred spirits, cept you are a whole lot smarter. :-) Buddy

Good eye! Actually this is a common issue with the poly caps used in this era. I have done a video on the capacitors before. When the unit is exposed to moisture the outer coating cracks over time. When this happens the capacitor checks ok but will fail over time. Looking at the ceramic I think it was chiped. I still have this unit and when I find the matching receiver I will recap the unit. Thanks

I would love a chance for the meter. I'm just starting on recaping my DX-300. That meter would be a nice companion to my BK Precision 1820 frequency counter.

Hi Buddy! Too bad about the burnt meter. Could you find another which fits mechanically, with the same current (typically 200uA-1mA) and swap the scale form the bad one?
