I'm now working on studying for the Japanese language teaching competency test. Now I actually understand what Cooperative Principle means. Very helpful.
Jurij Fedorov for starters, every introduction to pragmatics or linguistics in general should suffice. If you want the bare original, try to dig up Grice's works: Grice, H.P. (1975). "Logic and Conversation," Syntax and Semantics, vol.3 edited by P. Cole and J. Morgan, Academic Press. Reprinted as ch.2 of Grice 1989, 22-40.
Thank you. I am not to used to answers on youtube that don't include words like "you are retarded", "you need to find a new brain". This was actually very helpfull. I love logic! www.ucl.ac.uk/ls/studypacks/Grice-Logic.pdf
I know the author's full name, but I guess I can't give it to you if he didn't do it himself... well, just cite the RUclips user "Phloneme" as the author (he's a student from Germany).
Ja, ich war in Brocks Linguistikvorlesung und in deinem Tutorium dazu (WiSe 2013/14). Ich hab die Prüfung mit 1,0 bestanden, danke für den guten Unterricht! :D

I like the video, and the explanation, but I don't fully agree with the cooperative principle. For example your Asian boss might violate the relation maxim (but you could also call this an opt out), because he isn't interested in talking about you, but he likes to talk about himself instead and likes to 'show off' that he is the leader/boss. And because he is your boss, and you respect him, you shut your mouth, and listen to him, because people tend to give much more value to status in Asian countries. I hope I made myself clear. Another problem might occur when two people from different cultures talk with each other. If an Englishman says "That is interesting" it could in reality mean "That is completly bullshit". But people from different cultures generally speaking don't know this, so assume that the listener is really interested.
Violation means that participants don't abide by the maxims of conversation: If you lie, you violate the maxim of quality, if you mess up and say something really awkward, you violate the maxim of manner. In general, the cooperative principle and the flow of successful communication gets impaired. Now, flouting is a special kind of violation where you violate the maxim but you do it intentionally and in such a way that it is obvious you're violating it. In a way, you communicate by flouting a maxim, but you also communicate a bit more, depending on what exactly you do. This "a bit more" is what is called implicature. In my opinion, a good example for flouting is sarcasm, because sarcastic things are often the opposite of what you mean (quality maxim violated), but sarcasm often works with the polar opposite of what is meant, and this huge difference in meaning is what makes it obvious. The implicature of sarcasm would be to communicate that the previous utterance was in some way unfitting or idiotic. Hope that helps. :)
I do not like the last sentence 'Now You knwo how to comunicate in the correct way'... By flouting or violating these maxims the conversation starts to be interesting and 'salted' :)
Sorry about that. The problem is that it's difficult to get out of this reading mode when you've got a script. Well, this video is almost 4 years old, so if you've got a video suggestion, I could try to make one in a more natural voice.
great explanation better than my teacher and the book itself ! thank you so much
Thank you for making this video. I could understand the principle easily! Concise, simple, and brilliant!

That is useful for my presentation! but how can i cite this? who is the author??
I know the author's full name, but I guess I can't give it to you if he didn't do it himself... well, just cite the RUclips user "Phloneme" as the author (he's a student from Germany).

Clearly explained
Hi, I want to ask a little question. How can we know that speaker had did violation of maxim?
What is a flouting exactly ?
How to distinguish between violating and flouting maxims in the answers ?
I like the video, and the explanation, but I don't fully agree with the cooperative principle. thnks for you help plz i want some help in understanding the difference between violating and flouting

Gosh, everyone's a critic...
Yeah, this is a critic. But a statement. That's how to start a discussion
Is it possible to flout all four of the maxims?
Mika Laprebendere yes it is. Look out for Jenny Thomas' book. She goes into detail on how to flout all four maxims.
@@kaktees could please tell us the complete book name?
thnx😊😊😍😍👌👌👌
How I love your diction 😍
So funny xD
Very good explanation, but the voice is very off-putting
