To me This song feels like from the perspective of a child
Like the line "I think your house is haunted Your dad is always mad and that must be why And I think you should come live with Me and we can be pirates Then you won't have to cry
Or hide in the closet" for me it's about a childhood friend who doesn't have loving family like her so she want him/her to come over her house so that doesn't have to cry all the time

  • @joeys4289
    @joeys4289 4 года назад +278

The song is indeed very innocent and is sung from a perspective of a child. The imagery of the lyrics of a whole seem to represent an ephemeral summner that was spent playing in nature etc.. Taylor is singing about her childhood friend that she hasn't seen since she was seven because she moved to Nashville to follow her dream "Though I can't recall your face, I still got love for you. but you never forget your childhood friends because they're a huge part of your development. Her friend seemed to have a rocky family dynamic "And I've been meaning to tell you I think your house is haunted Your dad is always mad and that must be why" : This is my favorite line since it shows the innocence and logic of a small kid, that's the only way to rationalize the miserable home environment is blaming the supernatural since this would make more sense to her than the actual reason. Final note I have "Pack your dolls and a sweater We'll move to India forever" This is a node to A little princess film, further cementing in my opinion the theme of this song. I really liked your reaction, keep em coming!

This song makes me feel so sad, when I heard it for the first time I just thought about my best friend in my childhood, she had an accident and she passed away, and sometimes it's hard for me to remember her face, but I can remember that we had a beautiful friendship even when her father was always mad and screaming she always had a beautiful smile on her face for me.

The beauty of folk music is that it can simply be a story and not about the musician. Some things may actually be personal, but I think a lot of it is just creativity and storytelling. I think this type of music is perfect for Taylor. It is beautiful!

What I love about this song is because it's something that anyone can relate to. We had friendships when we were children and sometimes we can't even remember their faces, but these faceless people somehow have a special place in our memories.

This songs sounds to me like Taylor in her 7 year old self remembering about the time she had with her friend who used to have a rough childhood. Very childlike and mature calm way of thinking and then super soothing and calming music which makes this like a "looking back at life while sipping a coffee" kinda song.

It's about childhood, Taylor is talking to a childhood friend that she can't actually remember her face but she remembers the love and trust. It's her bestfriend, a little girl telling Taylor that her house is a horrible place to live and she tells her to move in with her and travel, be pirates, etc. Sorry for my english, i'm from Argentina

Great reaction! Once you guys are done reacting to 'folklore,' I highly recommend checking out Taylor's 6th album, 'reputation'! It's a much darker and poppier album, and personally my favorite Taylor Swift album. Listening to that album for the first time was such a fun experience lol. I think you'd really enjoy seeing a different side of Taylor.

  • @Theteresamaria
    @Theteresamaria 4 года назад +15

Hey..I think she refers to pirates goes back to all the references in the album that relate to the movie Peter Pan. Like being young, Peter loosing Wendy, we could be pirates and in cardigan video you see the gold dust that comes out of piano. I could go on and on...but a lot of the songs tie together in some way. A lot of Peter Pan comparisons. This song especially..like thinking as a younger person and going on adventures ect...
I love watching you both and how you interpret everything!!💕

  • @yezzN02
    @yezzN02 4 года назад +9

I also think that this is introspection to a childhood. Aside from the title Seven, expressions like: "cross your heart, won't tell no other," "love you to the moon and to saturn," "I think your house is haunted...we could be pirates," all scream childlike conversation. Then the line about screaming ferociously before learning civilly, reflect on how as a child, if you're passionate about something, you don't refrain, but as an adult we learn social conduct, we sometimes double think, and have to refrain (in some sense). Reason why she asks this friend to remember this side of her. Reason why even though we can forget faces of our childhood friends, we still have love for them. And this request makes me feel like she wants to know that side of her is alive... somewhere...in the shared memories with said friend. Like, as adults we can forget that feeling, but if that friend who knew us then remembers, it lives, the memory and that "ferocious" side of you lives.
    My two cents! 🤷🏻‍♀️
Again, really enjoyed your reaction! I appreciate how your reactions involve insight about the content. 🙌🙌🙌

Not all Taylor’s song is about a lover. This is a song about a childhood friend who she cant even remember the face but still got love for her. It’s written in a perspective of a child. I’m just not sure if this was based on real life or just like the other songs which was based on her imagination.
think you captured why she uses pirate because pirate lives freely and maybe this childhood friend kindly have an abusive family and she want to comfort her ask her to live with her so she don’t have to cry anymore.

    In the trees
I hit my peak at seven feet
    In the swing
    Over the creek
I was too scared to jump in
But I, I was high in the sky
    With Pennsylvania under me
    Are there still beautiful things?
    Sweet tea in the summer
Cross your heart, won't tell no other
And though I can't recall your face
I still got love for you
    Your braids like a pattern
Love you to the moon and to Saturn
    Passed down like folk songs
    The love lasts so long
And I've been meaning to tell you
I think your house is haunted
Your dad is always mad and that must be why
And I think you should come live with
Me and we can be pirates
Then you won't have to cry
    Or hide in the closet
And just like a folk song
Our love will be passed on
    Please picture me
    In the weeds
    Before I learned civility
    I used to scream ferociously
    Any time I wanted
    I, I
    Sweet tea in the summer
Cross my heart, won't tell no other
And though I can't recall your face

I love the details she put in the song... my fav is "I hit my peak at 7 ft. In the swing" how far u can go on the swing made u so excited and compete with ur friends whereas "peak" is an intended pun referring to ur carrier/life peak points. Then she's in in her present self reminiscing her old self on a plane (Pennsylvania under me) and wondering if beautiful things still exists? .for her beautiful things r about innocence of young age and hiding with ur best friend....sharing secrets(cross ur heart won't tell no other) sitting on tree branches And having sweet tea in the summer ...the second verse tells that her friend who she can't recall now, had a troubled family and how she'd cry and hide in the closet. So she assures her friend that they can run away and be pirates( when we r young we dream of bizzare things)...then her present self reminisces how When u r young(7) u can scream cry anytime u wanted, you don't have to think about if ur making a scene or whatever... That age is just so pure ..

  • @katpham7138

The song is looking back and reflects on the innocence of childhood. And the friends from childhood that may not lasted through time but those simple playful memories are still there. And she hopes the friend still remembers those days as she remembers it where they would run around outside in the weeds and lived with reckless abandon. Visiting each others house and experiencing a parent that may have been volatile and not understanding it as a child but having a bad feeling in your tummy, and she explains it as the house feeling haunted.

I feel like Betty and James knew each other from a very young age and Seven is a James perspective because it talks about the problems that Betty's family had more specific when he says "your dad is always mad" and then in Cardigan Betty says "leaving like a father, running like water". I just feel like all the songs on the album are connected, it's not confirmed I may be wrong but that's what I think. Btw I love your reaction and how you analyze the lyrics

Nefeli S I definitely think this song actually is about Taylor as a kid since the imagery with this song on Spotify is video of her as a child sitting in some cut down trees. But when looking at the album as one large connected story, I think the connection you made to the line about the father in Cardigan is really clever!

Intended or not, I see the gay in this song - many young lesbians have intense friendships as kids (unsure about the gay male experience). Plus, the line about not having to hide in the closet if her friend were to live with her. I like that that can be interpreted in more than one way - as a reference to a child who hides from domestic violence within the household (the father is always mad, the house is haunted), *and/or* as a reference to a child whose home life is restrictive and hostile to who she is/wants to be, forcing her to hide "in the closet".

So close, on your reaction numbers, with this song. {wink} I've been thinking about my 'favorites' (there are no bad picks) as I listen, over and over and over to this album, and decided to just put them out there. After I numbered each, I happened to notice "Seven" was 7. How about that. That wasn't planned. LOL. Actually, that song really grew on me because I think originally when I heard it the ranking wasn't as high. Love every song but something had to be 1st and something had to be 17 - since I included "the Lakes," after finally hearing it (I waited until my deluxe edition CD order arrived.) Hi I'm new to your channel. I love your analysis of lyrics and I'll be visiting again. I'm sure you have figured out what this song means, childhood best friends. The best friend is in an abusive home, an abusive father. But, at the young age, she didn't understand. And now, adult Taylor is looking back wondering why she didn't do anything, you could have come lived with me and and we could hide away, and you wouldn't have to cry. your analysis of it being innocent and platonic I think is true, its a very sweet song. The lyrics of this song are a poem.
