When I lived in England I wasn’t able to work so I volunteered at the Age Concern charity shop in Olney. One day a woman dropped off a bag of clothing that she had cleared out of her gran’s home. Her gran had passed away and she was doing a clear out. The bag was filled with World War II 1940s outfits. I had forgotten how beautifully crafted clothing was before our disposable age.

She is an amazing young woman and I am a very proud Mom.

Not only that, they were expensive when they were made, so they were handled with care. Laundry machines and dryers didn't exist, so the few times they were washed, was by hand, if they were washed at all. People were also more mindful of how different materials should be cleaned and maintained. Nowadays, most people just throw everything into a washing machine, and wash everything in high heat, with too much detergent, and then throw everything into a dryer. Yep, correct. Said the same and I also wondered whether the ‘dress’ that was paired with something of a different era was actually a nighty.....I was thinking, ‘well, you’re certainly going to be comfy at that dinner party’
The day after my friend's wedding in 1991 we bridesmaids revolted and showed up at the morning after brunch in much altered Laura Ashley bridesmaid dresses from the wedding. I cut off my humungous collar and giant puffy sleeves and my friend made hers into a super mini with Doc Martens. Bride was not impressed. Dear Julie, I LOVE vintage dresses and your collection is just wonderful! Your polka dot dress is adorable and the Edwardian dress is a stunner. I had to laugh, I have such a weakness for Laura Ashley vintage dresses too, they are such great quality, made in England and nothing like today, I always look for them on Etsy. I absolutely adore the fact that you love to thrift shop, Julie! I'm a secondhand only kinda girl myself. Learning this about you not only made me more of a fan, it made my heart smile pretty big as well. 😘😘😘 from across the pond
HI Julie, I really love watching your videos. I was born and grew up in Illinois too! Lived my whole life there until moving to New Hampshire (USA) several years ago. After a tragedy, I moved alone 1000 miles and bought a little 18th century cottage that was the pits!---A real mess. I had very little money and I spent 8 years alone teaching myself construction/skills, and working on it before I met my husband. Now we've done more together, completely DIY and on a tight budget! (Love to salvage!) We are Anglophiles and Brits at heart who would move to the UK if only we could. (Hubby is a Spencer. His direct ancestors came here from England in 1635, and his family can trace their ancestors back in England to the Norman conquest. We live as much of a 'Brit life' as possible in our little 18thc. home that we furnished with 17thc. English antiques we collected on a budget for many years, when we found a 'bargain', lol! We have a cute mutt named Pippa, 8 hens, 2 ducks, and pet Pilgrim goose, Mayflower, who loves to listen to music---especially opera! Hubby and I have both enjoyed watching all your shows and admire you and your husband so much. You are so sweet and fun, and feel like a friend! I have a website, and there is a tour there of our tiny home and gardens, (TOUR page), and I thought you might like to 'visit'! Thank you for sharing your life at Mapperton. Sincerely, Mary and Adam Spencer www.thecountryladyantiques.com
These are so cute!! Thank you for showing - I especially love the red and white polka dot dress that you're wearing throughout the video. Hope you are well!
A recommendation for the sheer top that could be dressed up or down would look great w/jeans w/a white top or dressed up w/a silk tank top & the wide palazzo pants.
Hi Julie! You have the perfect figure for wearing vintage clothes, and I , for one, am so happy for you! The top you mentioned that is tied in the middle with pale cream-pink silk satin along with lace insets: I think technically that is a called a boudoir chemise. In other words if a lady woke up in her silk nightgown , often times a sleeveless silk satin nightgown, she would slip on her boudoir chemise so she could read the newspaper and enjoy breakfast in bed. The lovely thing about nowadays is we can put anything with anything, and bring new life into something that used to have a definite purpose , but need not be so now! Might I suggest you wear it over a white silk tanktop with white jeans. You could definitely pull it off! Enjoy!!🌺💖💝
I want to give a appreciative shout out to the Mike you are wearing. As a older person with some hearing loss it really helps me hear and enjoy my blogs like yours! Thank you so much! :):)
Such fun to have a tour of your vintage clothes! Thank you! I realize I have gotten rid of clothes that I should not have... decluttered too much or not enough, can’t win. In the past we almost all learned to see and made many of our own clothes. My sister made all her formal gowns in the 50’s and some for me in the 60’s. Almost no one has formal gowns now. The only formal dance my children went to was their proms. When I was in high school there were about 8 formal dances each year!
@@AmericanViscountess I have one she made me that is a short formal and my 1966 wedding dress I made, also short. I have the gold high heels with pointed toes that I wore in high School too!
I love that blouse with the ruffles. Ive been eyeing it in your videos because Ive got a blouse sewing pattern like that I havnt used yet. Maybe that can be my New Year project.
I am just catching up to your content. You are one of my favorite vloggers, top 5 channels that I watch. So refreshing to see authenticity and fun. I collect vintage too. It's so much fun when you find a piece and get all giddy! Someday, I will come to Europe and shop. Thank you for the beautiful channel and content.
The last piece you showed from the 1930s looks to me like I think what they used to call addressing jacket or both? It was a piece that women were when they were sitting up in bed but it was not a full length robe. Anyway it’s lovely and I think it would look great over a white or ivory sleeveless or strapless dress.
I love the vintage Gunne Sax dresses ! There were sewing patterns for them , too . I worked in a fabric store and we got in the fabrics for them . We used little Pearl buttons and velvet ribbons. I really love anything velvet or velour. For fall I have made some pretty velvet pumpkins and leaves .
A wonderful collection! The Edwardian overdress is exquisite! I have several 1930's silk bed jackets which I wear with slip dresses or over jeans with a tank tee (with fun flats). Once you figure out how they look best on you, they are very versatile. Thank you for sharing.
I wish I had held onto a few of my Laura Ashley dresses from the 80s. One in particular was this beautiful floral print with a slight v-neck and a light lace collar. It was a very English garden party look and would still be great, especially here in the South. Miss those bright colored espadrilles too!
Julie I’ve been wanting to create a vintage capsule wardrobe for years but never had the courage to do it... until your video! You totally inspired me to just do it and start collecting pieces, so I sold a whole bunch of my older, fast fashion pieces that I knew I wouldn’t wear again and made room for a whole host of vintage items. I’m absolutely in love with everything I’ve bought so far and I’m so exciting to keep collecting! I wanted to fight textile worker injustices and promote sustainability and that’s exactly what I’m doing now, thanks to you!!! ❤️
Thank you for this informative video. That was the first time I started to wonder how the real velvet was made. I am so used to the fact that everything is made of plastic that I couldn't figure it out myself, so I googled and now I know that velvet is made of silk with a special cut. :)

With the jacket perfect. The flimsy pink wrap i remember my grandmother had one in the 40s it was to wear over her nightie a bed jacket. I am now 73 yrs old this year. You realy suit 50s style
Your ceiling is very much like Hampton Court's. It's beautiful. You like thrifting and vintage? You're a girl after my own heart Julie. I always see more lovely things than I can afford.😁
Omg - this is great & i love how you explain and show things. i 💟 and appreciate vintage clothes. Thank you for sharing your interesting life with us! I am American and love to visit England when i can…..my husband went to college and grad school there…. All the best to you and hour family!!!!!!
Love the vintage dresses! I'm right with you, sometimes I re-purpose clothes, and before I throw away something I remove buttons, zippers, clasp, or trims. And have used to make quilt pieces when making my quilts. Learned that from my Mom. Janice from Arkansas USA
LOVE that red polka dot dress and the red velvet jacket with it. Stunning. Compared to current fashions, where even costly designer clothing is made in China, the clothes in prior eras were beautifully constructed and made to last. I don’t frequently go to second-hand shops because when I do it seems all I find are discarded current fashions that are not very attractive. I’ll have to do a google search for real vintage shops. Thanks for sharing your pieces. Just lovely.
I love the pink dress . It needs a nice slip under it. It’s lovely under the multi colored garment, too . I wish I could repair them for you. I’m sure you will find a seamstress to repair them . Would love to see more vintage clothes!
Thank you for this beautiful journey through time! I love the white, gauzy top, and i think it would look wonderful over a white blouse and a patterned skirt.
That little blush coloured, caridgan-like garment that you were saying could be dressed up or down...I think it would have been interesting to see it over the dress you're wearing. It isn't white like the polka dots, but it has the reddish undertone. Gorgeous clothes.
Oh these are so lovely. That beautiful blouse/jacket would look so pretty over a little black dress or any summer color. Now I wish I had not given away all my Laura Ashley dresses. I had the prettiest PINK dinner dress with a high front neckline that scooped down the back with a huge bow at the base. It was fun to wear and beautifully made.
My wife has a large number of Laura Ashley dresses, tops, coats and trousers bought for £3 to £10 each from the now closed Laura Ashley outlet shop. The most interesting thing about them is that over half were prototypes that did not have a Laura Ashley label and this was often the only copy of that prototype in existence. They were often a little wilder than the normal Laura Ashley clothes. For example she has a £10 short sleeved winter coat which was never mass produced. Her collection includes a number of copies of Laura Ashley vintage outfits.
Love vintage clothes, could you please put them on padded hangers, the ones you have them on can damage the beautiful fabric. Really great channel, look forward to every video! xx
Julie, you need black cigarette pants and either a pink or champagne colored silk cami to go underneath the silk bed jacket. Skinny denims would work for a dress down with the cami. A nice rhinestone necklace from the 50s nd you'll look perfect. (It would work with the Edwardian jacket too.)
Love a thrift/consignment vintage look & shops, u hava great stylists yet it is your perfect figure that's makes the vintage look so gorgeous on you, seen them all on you, my fav r sheer tops, beautiful velvets & colors but it's the fine detail of clothes as u say i love most 🌺 get a kick out of u & Stephens relationship, he's like ur besties so cool 😆
Looks like a bed jacket from a thirties movie, but you could wear it as a cover up, the pink dresses are lovely and the red velvet jacket, beautiful choices.
Julie is a breath of fresh air when compared to That Woman that H married. What a shame that he didn't choose as wisely. Could never imaging That Woman buying anything in a charity shop, let alone wearing it.
Even when I became an adult in the late 1970s, then the 80s and 90s, the clothing quality was so much better🙂
How lovely, so sorry to have missed that.

Julie has a brilliant IQ. She is a genius in living life in a million subjects.
The short silk " blouse" is actually a bed jacket, my great grandma had one. I am a British Expat .
I thought the same thing
my grandma had them as well...but how nice to re use as a daily piece of clothing
Yes, it probably originally had a beautiful gown with it. The gowns wore out but I see the bed jackets often because they just never got the wear.
My grandmas used to wear them too.
Would be so pretty with a velvet black form fitting shorter dress as a coverup.
My daughter works charity events and came up with the idea of showcasing models (volunteers) wearing vintage dresses on the runway. A particular vintage dress she chose to wear was auctioned off for a tidy sum and the money went to a worthy cause. She also did events to raise funds needed during the Covid-19 pandemic. I totally agree!
My grandmother had a Lanvin trousseau and it was gorgeous from the 1930's.
Vintage pieces are well made. That’s why they have lasted so long.
Then complain how all their clothing is faded, has no form and is pilling.
They were also altered to fit, so the fabric didn't get stretched and bunched, which exacerbates wear and tear. The hems weren't too long, and they were patched up constantly, and it was normal to wear the same outfit for years.
I also believe that is a bed jacket from the 30’s.
Yep, correct. Said the same and I also wondered whether the ‘dress’ that was paired with something of a different era was actually a nighty.....I was thinking, ‘well, you’re certainly going to be comfy at that dinner party’
I think it would be lovely with a black silk .
@@hootenanny1001 I think so. The really transparent ones where night ones or underwear.
I’d pair the top with vintage or replica vintage cigarette pants / peddle pushers rather than jeans, so you keep the nostalgia look.

Thank you so much Carli! Means a lot!!! See you back here and over there every week!
Lovely sugared almond colors. What pretty clothes.
The two pink ones are super pretty! Those are my favorites. I really love the vintage dresses.
With the jacket perfect. The flimsy pink wrap i remember my grandmother had one in the 40s it was to wear over her nightie a bed jacket. I am now 73 yrs old this year. You realy suit 50s style
With all the craziness in the world , your channel is a Respite from it all ! thank you
I appreciate that!
Such a beautiful collection. My fav are definitely the pink one from 1930 and the prairie one from 1970.
Love the velvet blazer
Your ceiling is very much like Hampton Court's. It's beautiful.
You like thrifting and vintage?
You're a girl after my own heart Julie.
I always see more lovely things than I can afford.😁
Love that!
Lovely as usual Julie ❤️thank you for sharing 🥂❤️🙏
You are so welcome! xx
Omg - this is great & i love how you explain and show things. i 💟 and appreciate vintage clothes. Thank you for sharing your interesting life with us!
I am American and love to visit England when i can…..my husband went to college and grad school there…. All the best to you and hour family!!!!!!
This was delightful to watch. Love the flow and femininity of the 30s style. 🌷
So glad you enjoyed it!
Love the vintage dresses! I'm right with you, sometimes I re-purpose clothes, and before I throw away something I remove buttons, zippers, clasp, or trims. And have used to make quilt pieces when making my quilts. Learned that from my Mom. Janice from Arkansas USA
The little bed jacket would be great with jeans!
I love dresses, I too have some lovely thrift finds ❤️🙏
Thanks so much
You have a classic look. I luv the 1930s but I’m very hourglass !that was fun!
Oh thank you!
I found you on the Chateau series. I’m a new subscriber now! I also ❤️❤️ Vintage finds!
👩🏻🍳🤗
An old fashion yet stylish and very thrifty. I would've bought a new ones or had a designer made but she's amazing!
Yes, I agree IS a bed jacket! Worn when in bed and receiving visitors.
Great idea!! Next vintage video I'm going to be trying them on!
Such a stunningly beautiful collection ~ you have such a good eye for style/design Julie! Would love to see more videos like this .
Thank you so much!
I love your dress Julie,very nice !
That last little top is called a bed jacket. To wear over a negligee while resting in bed.
Love your take of history and preservation. So relatable. I’m from Illinois, Chicago. Love your videos!
Glad you like them!
Thanks for sharing! You look fabulous in that polka dot 50's dress!
Julie- love your enthusiasm and unaffected personality. Your clothes are fantastic! Please put a link to your stylist . 😊
This lady is ADORABLE. I just like, have immediately fallen in love. LOVE HER! lol
Love the vintage clothes, great video ❤️👍🏻
My wife has a large number of Laura Ashley dresses, tops, coats and trousers bought for £3 to £10 each from the now closed Laura Ashley outlet shop. The most interesting thing about them is that over half were prototypes that did not have a Laura Ashley label and this was often the only copy of that prototype in existence. They were often a little wilder than the normal Laura Ashley clothes. For example she has a £10 short sleeved winter coat which was never mass produced. Her collection includes a number of copies of Laura Ashley vintage outfits.
I'm also a seamstress lol and repairing moth holes is super easy depends on where they are located however.
LOVE your style...and thriftiness...you totally rock!!! 💗💗💗
I still have all my 1980’s Laura Ashley dresses. 😀 Love them.
Love vintage clothes, could you please put them on padded hangers, the ones you have them on can damage the beautiful fabric. Really great channel, look forward to every video! xx
Great idea!
Pale pink top with jeans. I love all of the 30s clothes. Fabulous.
Beautiful pieces, but I absolutely love the top you haven't worn yet (btw, dress down w/cute earrings) and the 60s dress... the colors are amazing. 😍
Thank you!
@@AmericanViscountess You're very welcome. 😊
Great suggestions, I'll have to try these!
Thank you so much!!
Very interesting. I also have a Laura Ashley 1980s dress, which I still wear and love. Thanks.
Wonderful!
Looks like a bed jacket from a thirties movie, but you could wear it as a cover up, the pink dresses are lovely and the red velvet jacket, beautiful choices.
Great idea!!
Quite a nice selection. My favorite is the Edwardian piece.
Julie is a breath of fresh air when compared to That Woman that H married. What a shame that he didn't choose as wisely. Could never imaging That Woman buying anything in a charity shop, let alone wearing it.
