    This is a process of blue matching the pinion bore to the shaft. The shaft and the bore are tapered by a certain angle.
    The idea is to ensure full contact between bore and shaft. After each check the bore is hand scraped to achieve full contact
    But he was applying too much blue, which will definitely show full contact. A very thin coating should be applied and checked for contact.
    This seems to be a quick solution, to avoid dismantling the motor completely.
    However it is better to have perfect matching by grinding both shaft and bore and suiting them to standard guages.
    It's high time our railways are modernized.

    this procedure is rediculus, on d87 traction motors we cleaned shaft and gear, heated gear on magnet heater and slid onto shaft, never had one come loose, we had machinests good enought with a torch they could cut the old gear off and not damage the shaft, I was an electrician changing brush holders and new brushes

    Dear friend, video is good, but one thing, while heating the pinion the temperature should be 150°c to 175°c, if more then the colour of the pinion will chang and it effects badly on the metal of the pinion moreover a gauge should be used that to measure how advance the pinion penetrated, if the pinion advancement exceeds it may cracked or there may be chance for shaft sharing, one more applying Blue coat fot surface checking is not efficient, but Film taking by tape is good, where the filing is carried out there you can notice a deep mark, pinion bedding is most important, proper bedding gives assured fitting, snap taking proves that 90%of bedding should be accurate, main thing always maintain the colour of the pinion should not be changed by over heating as they're made up off High Speed steel, according to BHEL somewhere oil bath is being used for pinion heating, ok friend thank you

    I'm very curious about the bearings and the sealing and lubrication solutions. If I'm right there is a cylindrical roller bearing at the drive end (floating) and a deep groove ball bearing at the ventillation end, right?

    Is there any video about how they do the disassembly and assembly of the traction motor?

    This a shrink fit method. We are using small oil bath to heat up the penion. I could not observed that shaft was taper or straight. Cup and cone method is also reliable. No heating required. Even grooved ring is also suitable between shaft and gear. Offcource it need external washer with fastner to expand on between. We used in sulzer twin lobe blowers.

    • @oldguy2800
      @oldguy2800 4 года назад +1

      This has been the traditional method for ever on all loco built in USA. Keyways introduce a stress path for motor shaft failure. With proper interference fit, it is the most reliable method

    • @nishakurian7762
      @nishakurian7762 4 года назад

      Why do you need key when there is not timing requirement? The key is usually not intended for taking torque....it just aligns the gear to some set angle.
      Also the stresses on these gears are obviously humongous.....do you want to machine sharp cornered keyways in high stress shafts?

    • @iBackshift
      @iBackshift 4 года назад

      Simple to know. Look at maximum HP of the engine and divide the HP into the amount of axles. If a 3500hp engine has 6 axles, then the motors have at least 583hp, then multiply a safety factor of 1.2 so then you would be safe to say one would have maximum 700hp for a certain amount of time at full load.

    • @srpatnaik4548
      @srpatnaik4548 6 лет назад +1

      Exactly ...The armature can be keyed or splined to avoid slipping...

    • @inothome
      @inothome 6 лет назад +20

      It's a tapered interference fit, that's why he heated the bull gear for final assembly. Once it cools down it shrinks and holds tight to the armature. That's also why he was checking the contact pattern, to make sure over 85% of the two surfaces would be in contact after the final fit.
      An interference fit has no backlash, is easier to machine and can handle more torque. A keyed connection wouldn't handle the torque in this application and if it did, it would eventually have to much backlash and either ruin the armature or the gear. Shaft balancing may play a part as well with a keyway.
      With the splined connection there is more machining involved, always has some backlash from the start and, like the keyed connection, would eventually wear out from the constant power on and power off and reversal of rotation a locomotive experiences. Not to mention, railroads have been using interference fits since the steam engines. It's easy to machine and it's been proven over the years to work.

    • @kleetus92
      @kleetus92 4 года назад +2

      @@inothome Better explanation than this video had. Odd method of attachment though, versus a regular shrink fit. I guess it works though.

    • @inothome
      @inothome 3 года назад

      @koti Kaatan Press tapered fit works, been using it for over 100 years, much less machining needed. Sure there are other ways, but this is simple and it works. As evident that it's still being used for years and years. Also, not sure what type of torque each style is rated too, but I don't think there are many machines that will generate much more torque than a traction motor or the same fit in old steam engines. Anytime you have splines there is room for backlash and subsequent wear from it. This has absolutely zero backlash or splines to wear.

    • @inothome
      @inothome 3 года назад

      @koti Kaatan They use hydraulic pressure on a journal inside the pinion. It pops it off with no damage at all. No pressing, no heat, no hammering, no cutting. Pretty cool system, but it uses up to 60,000 PSI of pressure to pop it. There are videos on RUclips of it.

      Spur gears are economical and fitting from an engineering stand point. There is little to no shock loads on a traction motor. The load is spread out over 4 or 6 bull gears. Those gears are hardened and wont shear. They only wear out from long life and good lubrication or short life from poor lubrication - and proper or improper installation(alignment).
