Good point, reminded Me That i got safety glasses for throwing knives i got a few years ago when i started, gotta start using those, if i get cut or stabbed a little bit then so be It but we dont wonna risk our eyes, thats for sure
@alexanderstalung9447 that's correct safety first. Iv had tips of knives breaking and flying and wood chips. Bounce backs also. Be safe and happy throwing!
My favorite tip was practicing one technique. But really, the whole video is priceless information, especially the clip of your injury. I literally just had a straight ricochet towards my face at night with low light. I got two great sticks, and my mind got caught on those instead of my finally throw. It launched at me and I literally had to Matrix the blade, and i smacked it away because even if it missed my face, it could have gone into my chest. I put the blades up for the night. I hammered the tips down a few days ago and started throwing them again.
I hope you weren't injured, brother! The shuriken that stuck me really good in the palm of my right hand was headed straight for my face, at warp speed; I chose to stop it with my hand. 8-/
You will see brother i was ULTRA lucky !!! Small Knives,Bo shurikens can do lot of damage when they rebounce not to mention my heavy throwing knives :D But i will give lot of tips in this video how to avoid that (its mostly like tutorial vid) ,)))
@AdamCeladin I'm very glad you were fortunate, brother! Yeah, I like that soft targets are an option for shuriken. I know that wooden targets are necessary for big knives, generally speaking. Anyway, I'm looking forward to the video. 👍👍

@@TheShurikenZone Funny thing if you have Dojo in Japan you can have Tatami Mats for free bcs they throw them away from houses etc. but they are almost impossible ship overseas like that bcs of regulations or something :/ I will try to ask Master Jakub but i think even him never had one of those targets :/ I was throwing in to Tatami omote and great feeling :P
Very informative video Adam. I was throwing in my garden for about a year experiencing many blade returns and managing to dodge the oncoming fast spinning knives through rapid reflexes and definitely at times divine intervention 🙏. I felt that I was riding my luck, so eventually I got wise and purchased a stab proof vest and a full face paintball mask. I then used these until my technique and accuracy improved or sometimes if I get new blades or try different techniques. I was watching your videos from the beginning of my knife throwing journey (during the 1st lockdown). Thank you Adam. Love, Strength and Respect my friend🔪🔪🔪

Completely agree with wearing closed toed shoes. On New Year’s Eve 2023 was just doing some casual throwing while wearing slippers and had one my knives ricochet off the target and pierce the side of my bit toe. I had to be rushed to the emergency room and had to get that cut stitched up. After that I always wore closed toed shoes when throwing anything.
Thank you for that advice. I used to throw knives and several times I have had to step out of the way of a ricochet. If I hadn't stayed alert, they could have hit me.
One thing I've also practiced is trying to throw with as little effort as possible and still make the knife stick. This trains technique and sensitivity.

A hint on how to easily find your knives if they go missing in the bush. Get a magnetic extendable pointer of the type used to pick up screws and other small items. Extend the pointer all the way and sweep the leaves and bushes, the magnet will stick to the knife even if you can't see it. Most of these come with pocket clips like pens so easy to carry and makes finding knives much less stressful. I also glue a larger magnet on the end of the pointer to make it more effective.
From my experience spin throwing, especially half spin since naturally one throws closer to the target, is more dangerous than no-spin w.r.t ricochets, as the throw carries more kinetic energy and misses tend to bounce the knife in unexpected angles. Great tips BTW.
Thank you for the tutorial, you always bring up good points and I love the way you show humility. No one is perfect and things can and do often happen. So many people try to show perfection like nothing ever goes wrong. I appreciate a man of your top abilities showing that even you have had close calls and mistakes. I'm glad it wasn't worse judging by the clip where the knife flew back at you, I've had more than one close calls. And I always wanted to throw a Meat cleaver or something different, so glad I watched this video. Because I want to continue learing the art of throwing, thank you for the video man.
I have caught a couple bad bounce backs. I was throwing a Wharncliffe style throwing knife one time…. I threw it very hard, and I didn’t have time to react when it bounced back… It hit me in the forehead with the butt.. I actually fell to my knees. I got very lucky. 14.5” long 3/16” thick. Glad you’re ok.

I always tell everyone when I introduce something to throw that it can be very unpredictable, so always be ready to dodge even if you're down range from the target and even if (especially) someone else is throwing. Some of the 15-20 foot throws can make it all of the way back to the thrower no problem, especially if it ricochets towards your feet. I've had times where the Earth is impaled right where my foot was a second ago (dodging). Edit: scribal errors

Add a little bit more to the first tip. Watch professional knife throwing videos and books. Because there are so many fake tutorials on it at least years ago when I was first starting out. I seen your videos and they cover the basics to more advanced throwing methods and even how to improve your throwing skills. So as an amateur blade thrower (yes I throw more than knives) I recommend anyone starting review Adam's videos it will prevent you from getting led astray and possibly hurting yourself. I say that because of thinking that someone wouldn't lie about proper teaching and ended up with the knife ricochet off a target stabbing into my hand. I ended up having to learn the hard way by trail and error which people were teaching properly and which were frauds. I haven't tried allof Adam's videos but I tried a lot and while not as skilled even training for around 30 years I know that he is teaching real skills

Who am I to argue with a world champ? Good advice all- I will quibble with point 3 a bit: consistent technique? yes. Consistent knives?.... I think people should vary that. I practice half-spin, mostly. And I can do it with anything from a nail to a bowie knife (within my range). Almost any pointy thing, I can stick it. Technique? Yes, delve deep on your technique. But throw anything that can stick, so you can apply that technique Broadly with whatever is to hand. And ALWAYS be ready to duck or dodge. ALWAYS.

I started throwing knives as a way to train for Aikido. I was told that throwing a punch a person or a knife are all very similar. The main skill we were trying to practice aikido was being able to accelerate constantly through the throw. You were never whipping or yanking people around. If you can accelerate constantly then you often build up a higher top speed and more importantly a more stable throw than if you accelerate in a way that is too violent. The end goal is to cultivate something vaguely akin to laminar flow with your projected energy. Essentially you pivot around your core in some way to impart energy into your fist, knife or opponent and the goal is to simply let go when they have accelerated properly. The punch, person or knife should then fly away from you with it's energy and try to pull itself out of your grip. This is why I often say that the final part of the throw should almost feel liek you are dropping a penny into a well, only the, "dropping," is horizontal because of the throw.
Awesome advice. I would say in the beginning few years definitely wear safety glasses. When I first started after a few months I had forgot to put my safety glasses on. Also forgot to mention, the most dangerous throwing is short distance within 9 feet. So that day I was throwing from about 8 feet and too much force and a piece of splinter ejected back from the target and hit me exactly in the eyeball. I thought I had gone blind and had to go to emergency. It turns out the splinter which are very sharp had damaged my eyeball and I was lucky it did not pierce through my retina. I took several weeks to heal my eyeball and if the splinter landed straight it would have pierced my eyeball and I could have been blinded. So I learned to always be very alert and never throw too close to the target without safety glasses.

I had a similar experience with a rebound. I was throwing on pressure treated lumber and had a rebound. The rebound hit my neck...was lucky. I took the butt of the knife, not the blade, otherwise it could have pierced my carotid. Definitely a good set of tips. On the proper targets for sure, and also tutorials. Back when I started, same for you I'm sure, there really wasn't any tutorials available, so I had to learn on my own. I started with rotational throwing, and wasn't overly impressed, left it off for years. I eventually figured out no flip, and really fell in love with it. Love your videos Adam. Keep up the good work!
I tell people to treat knife throwing like using guns or archery. Because they are all fun but can be Very lethal if not respecting the equipment. And remembering they are not not toys. But instruments and tools.
Many of the tips were good, over thinking is one of the things i remind myself of, when i empty my mind and relax i am throwing better. I also decided at the beginning to concentrate on no spin technique at 10', now i toss in step back drills every so often going back to 20'.
I am a beginner and I have already made a lot of these mistakes because I hadn’t watched a tutorial like this one yet. Had a ricochet and a slice to the forehead. Thank God it didn’t hit my eye. I would add it couldn’t hurt to wear eye protection, at least, especially when new at close distances. I actually wear a face shield now! This video will help many people.
Your comment on targets reminded me I know a guy in the tree removal service. I'll ask him to get me a cut from a softwood tree. I have a few knives that are mid-level quality but I'll get three that are the same to start with.
4:27 i lost one of my relatively new acejet stingers for over a summer, it ricochet off the board i threw it at and disappeared not even a large magnet could find it, later in the cooler months my step dad found it buried in the garden as he was about to till it, covered in rust but hey still found it

Always wear safety glasses Throwing it jumps of wood can chip off in fly back at you. Also classes are very recommended

The main skill we were trying to practice aikido was being able to accelerate constantly through the throw. You were never whipping or yanking people around. If you can accelerate constantly then you often build up a higher top speed and more importantly a more stable throw than if you accelerate in a way that is too violent.
The end goal is to cultivate something vaguely akin to laminar flow with your projected energy. Essentially you pivot around your core in some way to impart energy into your fist, knife or opponent and the goal is to simply let go when they have accelerated properly. The punch, person or knife should then fly away from you with it's energy and try to pull itself out of your grip.
This is why I often say that the final part of the throw should almost feel liek you are dropping a penny into a well, only the, "dropping," is horizontal because of the throw.

Awesome advice. I would say in the beginning few years definitely wear safety glasses. When I first started after a few months I had forgot to put my safety glasses on. Also forgot to mention, the most dangerous throwing is short distance within 9 feet. So that day I was throwing from about 8 feet and too much force and a piece of splinter ejected back from the target and hit me exactly in the eyeball. I thought I had gone blind and had to go to emergency. It turns out the splinter which are very sharp had damaged my eyeball and I was lucky it did not pierce through my retina. I took several weeks to heal my eyeball and if the splinter landed straight it would have pierced my eyeball and I could have been blinded. So I learned to always be very alert and never throw too close to the target without safety glasses.

I had a similar experience with a rebound. I was throwing on pressure treated lumber and had a rebound. The rebound hit my neck...was lucky. I took the butt of the knife, not the blade, otherwise it could have pierced my carotid.
Definitely a good set of tips. On the proper targets for sure, and also tutorials. Back when I started, same for you I'm sure, there really wasn't any tutorials available, so I had to learn on my own.
I started with rotational throwing, and wasn't overly impressed, left it off for years. I eventually figured out no flip, and really fell in love with it.

I tell people to treat knife throwing like using guns or archery. Because they are all fun but can be Very lethal if not respecting the equipment. And remembering they are not not toys. But instruments and tools.

One suggestion I wear highly rated safety glasses when I throw. Also if throwing close I throw at an angle so if it bounces it bounces away from me.
Paint your knives florescent colors if you don't want to loosing them.

Many of the tips were good, over thinking is one of the things i remind myself of, when i empty my mind and relax i am throwing better. I also decided at the beginning to concentrate on no spin technique at 10', now i toss in step back drills every so often going back to 20'.

I am a beginner and I have already made a lot of these mistakes because I hadn’t watched a tutorial like this one yet. Had a ricochet and a slice to the forehead. Thank God it didn’t hit my eye. I would add it couldn’t hurt to wear eye protection, at least, especially when new at close distances. I actually wear a face shield now! This video will help many people.

Your comment on targets reminded me I know a guy in the tree removal service. I'll ask him to get me a cut from a softwood tree. I have a few knives that are mid-level quality but I'll get three that are the same to start with.

4:27 i lost one of my relatively new acejet stingers for over a summer, it ricochet off the board i threw it at and disappeared not even a large magnet could find it, later in the cooler months my step dad found it buried in the garden as he was about to till it, covered in rust but hey still found it
