  • The REAL Reason Maui Was Thrown Into The Sea...| Moana Backstory
    Maui’s backstory in Moana may have been briefly glossed over, but it still proved to be one of the more tragic moments throughout the entire movie. It turns out that Moana’s telling of Maui’s origin was pretty accurate when compared to the Maori myth that the character was based on. And thanks to that myth it was easy to learn more about the circumstances around Maui’s tragic birth and why his origin story was one of the darkest in Disney's history even though he made it sound impressive in the film.
    In today's video we look at The REAL Reason Maui Was Thrown Into The Sea...Keep watching to see this Moana backstory of Maui, and where Maui came from. Including who Maui's really parents were, why Maui was thrown into the sea in the first place, and how Maui became the demigod we all know him to be today!

      Moana doesn't portray Maui realistically. I am from NZ and Maui is part of our history. He was actually a real historical figure and one of our ancestors.. look up stories on Maui.. this movie says nothing about his life. Only the beginning.. they don't even tell his ending. Anyone who hasn't looked into him and is not of pacific nationality won't know that Maui has 3 brothers. Ones the were extremely jealous of him. He had a mother that was afraid of him.. Maui isn't called The Trickter for nothing. He was actually very arrogant, prideful and overtime he became very angry. Just like any person he had trauma and in his adult life, that effected him and his choices and they way he conducted himself with himself and those around him...
      Fun fact..
      He killed his brothers and took their wives as his own against their will.
      Another fun fact. Before he died he believed himself so special and apart from the rest of his tribe, he thought he could cheat death. He was wrong

    Well, it's no surprise that things be different. IT is the way Disney writes. All they do is get the basics of stories or legends and write their own off that. Most all movies they've done were done so in that way. It's what caused big uproars in the Disney crews before he passed away and even after so much that many Artists and Writers leave Disney due to how much they don't like that they change stories. Is this bad practice? It's matter of opinion. I don't think it is cause it makes for more creative worlds, but that's my opinion.

      I think I liked the Disney better, in the sense that their movies seem to encourage getting to know more about others, not just go off some superficial thing, like in Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, Moana. The old stories remind us of where we failed to come together as one, and the new ones why* it is important to remember the strengths we have when we come together.

      @rainvictorious1857 Год назад +8

      I’m Māori and he’s got it a bit mixed up from other legends from similar cultures like Hawaiians. So basically maui’s parents were one of the first humans to be made from the god tumatauenga so a human hadnt died at this point in history and after having 5 children who were healthy and fine, Maui was born premature and his parents were unhappy with this outcome and wanted strong children only to carry on the legacy.
      (So they weren’t immortal)
      They wrapped him up in her hair to make sure he wouldn’t be able to somehow swim(it’s actually much darker then this)
      Maui then dies but the other gods saw good and potential in him and felt sorry for what had happened that they granted him the powers of a demigod.
      He then goes home after being looked after by the gods/uncle and is very cheeky so he showed off how strong he is now to his family and rubbed it in 🤣 it’s much funnier when you grow up reading and learning about him through your whole life.
      -some people have different recollections of his history due to them being myths and legends changed through out time and cultures.

    In the video it was mentioned that maui became the first being to ever die, but he was trying to gift humanity with immortality.
    But if he was the first being to die, doesn't that mean that everything else was effectively immortal until that point anyway?
    If no one had ever died until maui, but then after that humanity "remained mortal", and that somehow gave them shorter lives?
    Lots of contradictions there.

      they said that before maui was born there was no death in the world, he was born pre mature then thrown into the ocean, then later in life hes trying to get immortality back for the ppl. im not sure whats so hard to get about the story

    • @czyionemendoza6149
      @czyionemendoza6149 Год назад +19

      @@soulsreaper7145 that means before Maui was born, everyone was immortal. So where did the concept of mortality come from?
      Then, let's assume that they became mortal after Maui's birth. How did they verify? It wasn't explained in the video of how they knew they were mortal.
      If there was no divine intervention, someone had to die to verify mortality, but that contradicts the statement from the video that states that "Maui was the first to die".
      In short, the video never really explained how humanity became "mortal" because based on the topics tackled in the video, humanity was pretty much immortal prior to Maui's death. Or you could say their mortality was proven Maui died but that doesn't explain Maui's goal of "making humans immortal" unless his father or some divine entity said that humanity was mortal.

    The original legend goes like this. When he was born, he was so small that his mother thought he was dead. Devastated, she cut off her own hair, her topknot (tikitiki), and wrapped him in it. She set him down in the sea, in this craft of hair, and let him drift out into the ocean.

    Maui's backstory is probably the darkest in Disney history up until his point...No other hero/sidekick/mentor character was forged in FAILED INFANTICIDE. In the movie it's heavily implied his parents were ordinary humans and he was granted demigod status by the gods themselves, AND there was no indication he reconciled with them.

    they're supposed to be pronounced "maow-ri" and "keh-reh-roo"
    i'm from new zealand, i'm part maori and it's bothered me a lot as i was watching, also seems they were drawing the story from Maori mythos rather than the other Polynesian stories of Maui, he's not strictly to us new zealanders, there's the other islands where the story also originates, like with all myth and legends as groups move around to different places, those myths and legends said by word of mouth change over time, so everyone's stories are different but can have some cross over where it all connects to the same story
