#Batman #BenAffleck is returning to the DCEU not just in Zack Snyder's Justice League Director's Cut, but in the upcoming The Flash movie. Despite the criticisms toward Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman, why is Affleck's performance as Bruce Wayne much worthier of appreciation? And what is the actual reason some viewers disconnect from the film, despite amazing attention to detail and well structured fight choreography? Erik Voss breaks down the extended Ultimate Edition of Zack Snyder's controversial Batman v Superman for the many details hidden throughout the film's visuals, production design, music, and sound design that make it a film that, despite its flaws, packs a hell of a punch and rewards attentive rewatches with deeper layers of meaning that might go missed the first time. What is Affleck Batman's true history with the Joker and past Robin sidekicks Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, and Tim Drake? Where in Batman v Superman are hidden cameos by Joker, The Riddler, and even Harvey Dent Two-Face? What was Zack Snyder's real intention for the cryptic Knightmare sequence and time-traveling cameo by The Flash, and how could it tie into Batfleck's future in the Justice League Snyder Cut and the Flash / Flashpoint film being announced at #DCFanDome?

Erik here! Thanks for joining us on this rewatch of Batman v Superman! I've been wanting to revisit this movie since it came out in 2016, and watching Zack Snyder's Ultimate Edition was so rewarding with interesting, hard-to-find details. My favorite new thing was the World Engine sound effects mixed into Bruce's dreams... what was your favorite new detail from this breakdown?
What happened to the X-men rewatch? Can you do X-men the official game before X3? It’s basically X-men 2.5.
He!!!!!!! Took ‘is durg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey, Erik! Just made a comment below about Snyder's 300 reference in BvS. We're you able to find it? 🤔
Dam hearing it be dick hits deeper for some reason. A bit more personal than if it were jason. ...
Everytime the mudic starts playing and the dirt rises at the end I always get goosebumps!
Diana rolls her eyes at Lex's story of Prometheus, because Lex gets the story wrong.
“You dont know my dad you mortal” id imagine that’s what Diana thought lol
People can hate this movie all they want but they can’t call it lazy, there is so much detail that goes into Snyders films it’s amazing.
You're right that it's not lazy, it just isn't coherent.
yeah it just ends up being muddled and confusing
You guys just need to piece it together like a puzzle, then you'll see it in full glory.
The Cyborg origin story and football game tie-in is genius.
i agree. great but subtle storytelling of the life that cyborg lost.
The Martha scene actually makes sense from a certain point of view, Bruce realises that he and Clarke aren’t so different, both human with mothers, and Bruce can finally save “Martha”, giving him closure for his mother’s death
It sounds sooooo good on paper, I just wished the execution was better. Or if there was time to breathe after it. It could have worked. But instead became...well, sadly meme’d to death.
The intention is perfect, it's just the dialogue that's jarring. I still love it, but just a few different words would have changed it hugely.
Bruce has also said the way to distract him is to bring up family so that's why he froze when clark said martha
@@grilly1986 yeah it's jarring but I think Bruce is angry because he things Clark is manipulating him.
To stupid to understand zack 😂😂😂
Ben affleck was hands down the best part about this movie.
Have you foresaken wonder woman!?
I really love Afflecks portrayal of a Batman who has broken after all his years of crime fighting and the losses that came with it, turning down a darker path
ItchyPilauBoto808
He’s back in the flash movie
Abe The Egyptian Pharaoh But maybe that’s it?
I really liked Batfleck! But I also really dug Jesse's Lex Luthor. I know he's not like the comics or other versions of Lex but that's exactly what made me like him. He was really refreshing :) Really trying to do something new and original.
The final heartbeat at the end of the movie is a nod to the ending of Frank Millers Dark Knight Returns when at the end of Batman's funeral Superman can hear Bruce's heartbeat start again
Poh yesh i just noticed that
It reminded me of the ending of x-men 3 with magneto slightly moving that chess piece. I love that kind of tease !
I’m ready, I have my cherry jolly ranchers and granny’s peach tea ready
Don’t drink the tea ☺️
Ready to get bombed
Haha
Lol
Granny’s peach PISS
I've always looked at Lex's hyperactivity as a public facade, subterfuge to hide from the outside world who he really is.
After he is captured, the mid-credit scene of him on his yacht with Deathstroke is who he truly is. No need for a facade any longer, we have a colder, calculating, subdued Luthor.
Honestly hes a billionaire, he's probably on some hard ass drugs too. Or has been for a while, which makes people crazy in the head
@@ther3aper561 i like that
BvS: Save Martha!
Civil war: Bucky killed my mom
Godzilla vs Kong: Save Mothra!!!

Mothra will not show up in Godzilla Vs Kong because she’s currently dead
And whats your point ??
@@joseppburritohernandez007 that vs movies have something to do with mom

These movies were actually good man. Sux they’re clouded by hate. Excited for the new JL
In other words, people don't like them but you do.

Nah... they clouded by Warner bros

I actually really like this movie. The Ultimate Edition is obviously the superior cut of the film, but I like the theatrical cut too. And each time I watch it, I like it a bit more and something always draws me back to the film.
Unpopular opinion: I would say that the Ultimate Edition isn’t better, maybe even worse than the original. Let me explain: All it adds is the further development of plot lines that go absolutely nowhere by the end of the movie, the Africa-CIA thing, the Lois investigation, and the fact that Clark was trying to investigate the Batman by going to Gotham. The last two piss me off since it shows that Lois and Clark did more detective work, than “the world’s greatest detective”. You could say the Lois storyline helped incriminate Luthor, but that becomes irrelevant when the police find him bathing in tomato sauce, at the site where the monster emerged.
@@hectordoblado4987 get the hell out of here, marvel butthurt fanboi
arjun tt Wow, I actually believed for a second that someone would try to address the criticism. But I should’ve expected the typical Snyder fanboy response. What else you got? Are you gonna pull the “yOu DidN’t uNdeRstanD tHe mOvIe” card or what?
@@arjuntt2604 Hectors critism makes sense to me. I don't share it, but I understand it. But your argument is invalid. It suggest somebody can't like both (Marvel and DC). And if you are thinking that, you shouldn't argue in a comment section about movies, because you have much bigger problems than that. Sadly I can't recommend a psychologist in your region.
@PhoeFlame exactly my thoughts! I mean it’s ok to like one more but at-least respect the both of them!
The Injustice dream was so great. I really wish we could get a full AU movie in that Universe
We were gonna get that but Wb are just a horrible company.

The ultimate edition is seriously one of my favorite movies ever made.
💯
Same, I fight with people over this all the time
💯
I think you were just desperate for the movie to make sense and were overjoyed when it did. Nonetheless the extended still dropped the ball when it comes to every major story beat or character. It ruined Lex. It ruined doomsday. It ruined the name “Batman vs Superman” it was still nonsensical. But when compared to the original it looks a lot better
Snyder cut on the other hand is up there with the best comic movies of all time easily
@@phillyphilly__lii5653 not for me, ive only seen the extended cut and i still love it
I’m pretty sure Zorro is a poster on the wall right? And Excalibur is “showing Wednesday”
Oh shit good eye
I adore this movie, a genuine cult classic and a masterpiece for me. I think it failed with critics for all the wrong reasons
It was ahead of its time
David Ayer did confirm that Geoff Johns added the "harley quinn as an accomplice in the murder of robin" thing that broke timeline
i generally think this is one of the Batman films ever, it brought back the dark side of the Bat not the silly and goofy batman.Despite all its flaws i'd love to sit down and watch this different and experimental
art
I remember the time when i went to see bvs and at the end of the movie, the whole audience stood up and clapped. But then the whole world seemed to be against it because it chose to be different from the mainstream cinema and ridiculed for the martha scene which they failed to understand. No matter what people say, its a visually crafted masterpiece.
Batman reminds me of scarecrow when he's talking about fear and spraying green kryptonite gas
People might say it wasn’t the best movie, but I enjoyed. Am I the only one?
No, I enjoyed it as well. Obviously there are some complaints but I thought it was entertaining.
Same, it's not really a good movie, but I kinda enjoyed it
I also enjoyed it
It isn't the best but I enjoyed it too
this movie is perfect Lex's plans throughout this movie were amazing yet nihilistic perfect movie imo one of my all time favorites
Say what you want about batfleck, but that warehouse fight scene was the best on screen Batman fight of all time. Definitely exceeds Nolan’s slow punchy action
110%. It was like seeing an Arkham game IRL.
Okay, true, but the single 'fight' in the trailer for The Batman was honestly better. But the warehouse scene was still really good
Ryan McDowall that’s hilarious it was cool but it doesn’t even compare
@@thatjoshwright5577 I still think what Batfleck has is the best, but if any of the fights are like the one in the trailer, Battinson will be better.
The pearl falling into the hole with the young boy Bruce is the first clue that what we are seeing is a dream sequence and not what actually happened - the beautiful lie; it is stuff like this that makes me really enjoy Snyder's work and makes it always worth viewing at least a second time.
That makes perfect sense! I was hoping NRS would’ve addressed that scene specifically & broken it down for us but thankfully *you did* 🦇
WHY DID YOU SAY THAT NAME!!!!
you read that in Ben Afflecks vocie
ah damn lol
If you don’t understand the Martha scene you’re dumb
@@tomsiebert155 okay?
BBTJD just stating facts
I think the 'who watches the watchers?" Quote might of not been dent but could be one Harvey bullock considering he isn't so keen about batman
Aah. Might be.
Plus, Affleck's Batman has been active for 20 years. So it'd be weird if Harvey Dent was still around.
5:25 now *THAT* is how batman should look
ItchyPilauBoto808
Unfortunately :(
I’ll still wait and see before i make any judgements. I was against Affleck when he was announced to be batman, then i took back everything since he became the best batman ever.
We’ll see what Robert has to offer. I trust Matt reeves.
Harsh
Robert was F*cking phenomenal in that trailer!!
Honestly, i just love both actors.
ItchyPilauBoto808
I take it back. Pattinson impressed me!
So glad you've gone for the ultimate edition. Only way to watch the movie in my opinion
Did anyone catch "The end is nigh" graffiti on the billboard? Zack loves referencing Watchmen ☺
There's a Comedian smiley face logo in one of the scenes too.
Can we all agree the shot of Lex approaching the Kryptonian ship was beautiful.
Alfred line about “the fear that your powerless” is a reference to how lex is fearful that he’s not controlling Superman.
*"The feeling of powerlessness"
It also reflects when Lex says it's paradoxical to have knowledge without power
This movie has very interesting details that I never noticed, thank you for sharing them
10:57 sneaky little devil hiding in plain sight 😅 I like how he’s behind a camera just looking like a director aswell, it’s a nice touch👌🏽
I feel like new rockstars and film theory should work on one of the movies.
I hope they retcon Richard Graysons death and swap it for Jason so we can get a live action red hood
Tim Drake was the third Robin. Jason Todd was the second and Dick Grayson was the first.
Same red hood is my favourite dc character I think
No i love nightwing
Loyal to the fish I like nightwing it would be cool if they actually did more with Batman than just batman
The Shanaman yeah
The theatre says Zorro is now playing and Excalibur starts Wednesday. That means they watched Zorro. Why does nobody notice that?
Also I always thought that the pearl dropping was the first implication that the moment in the cave was a dream. I don’t think he kept the pearls. Hence he starts to fly and then says “in the dream...”
8:10 "Who watches the watchmen" is also a line said by Lex Luthor in Young Justice: Outsiders, released in 2019, about how the U.N. has satellites to monitor The Justice League's "Watchtower".
Unpopular opinion: I actually liked Lex Luthor in this movie.
You can. He’s from the Superman birthright comic. It’s fine.
My disappointment was quickly resolved at the end with the reveal of his iconic bald head.👨🏻🦲
You missed one, when Batman is making his smoke grenades he labels them Pb which is Lead on the periodic table and that is the element Superman cannot see through in the comics
Still the best super hero movie I ever saw. Still getting goosebumps with that amazing soundtrack.

@@kalesukangwa3746 the fact that you say you've never seen anything like it just tells how unique this movie is. So many people are still talking and making video's about it
I love this movie, no apologies. And now that we've gotten Zack Snyder's Justice League, it's lent further subtext and meaning.
Both movies are so awesome.
What I took away from the "Martha" scene is that the entire movie it shows bruce struggling with who he is (at 65+) and that was always fueled by his parents death, then Thomas Wayne's last words were "Martha" which bruce heard. THEN! Superman first said "you're letting him kill Martha" BOOM, Bruce thinks its him killing the memory of everything he devoted himself to. I thought this was a great story cause moms are pretty great.
3:03 one of the best comic book issue references, nice find 👏🏽
When I first saw this movie I thought Eisenberg was being set up to be the Joker, something about the way he moved and talked idk it just gave me big Joker set up vibes reminding me of Ledgers Joker. I think he would’ve made nice Joker. I also wasn’t listening well when someone called him “Lex” and didn’t realize he was playing Lex Luthor once he was bald😅
Very controversial... But that's the best conspiracy theory I've heard all day!
It's so nice to hear positive things said about every film you guys break down. Love this channel!
Real pearl necklaces have little knots in between each pearl so they don't rub up and scratch one another therefor the pearls would not fly all over unless fake pearls were used and if that's the case the Wayne's are a lot cheaper than they appear
2:47 ohhh Erik 😅you big geek😂
The level of detail is astounding. I always watch closely but damn, I missed alot of this. Great vid thanks!👍🏻
It’s really nice that you’ve gone over all these movies again. You have come a long way since your first breakdown
Batman fighting above and then from below is great how it mirrors the painting of angles and demons. 15:18
I never ever noticed until watching this video, the ruins of Wayne Manor behind Batman in the Knightmare sequence. That’s a cool detail they put in there, I always thought Bruce and his team would’ve stayed within the confines of the Batcave.
Well the omega symbol is where the lake was. He stays in the lakehouse normally and underneath is where the batcave is. So they are staying around.
BVS is so underrated...
In Captain America: Civil War, shortly after Zemo confronts the Winter Soldier, Bucky says to Steve "Your mom's name was Sarah..." and Sam responds, "So it's cool just like that?". To me I feel like this was a subtle nod/jab towards this scene 14:31
No
I doubt it, both movies came out within weeks of each other so it's unlikely but not impossible.
The heart beat at the very end was another call back to the dark Knight Returns. When Superman is at Bruce's funeral he hears it. Oh and kgbeasts clock was also a nod to Batman's timer in the dark Knight Returns . It even looked the same. You guy got some I missed but you missed those 2
2:46 to 2:50 is the weirdest thing I’ve ever watched
Lol “Superman says the safe word.” Fantastic
Love your channel for bringing up such amazing details.. 😊👍🏼

Thank goodness someone gets it.
Yay. People aren’t dumb anymore
Those who didn't like it were streets behind.
Period.
Kings of Cydonia or they were just used to watching the mcu
The Snyder cut needs to be Dceu cannon I won't accept anything else in fact upon it's release I'm burning my DVD of the theatrical cut
Eric, you explain things so well.
very well explained I really loved this movie :) thanks for explaing this movie and telling us about what comic book certain scenes are from :)
The Martha moment was confusing, but if you watch the CinemaWins video on BvS, it really dives deep into what it means and how it’s perfectly set up throughout the movie
It's not really that confusing. The real issue is general audience's short attention span and the need to have everything explained to them.
There's no room for subtext anymore.
It’s basically foreshadowed in the intro scene when Thomas Wayne utters his last (and only) word: *Martha*
And some call this movie "Style over substance" LOL
Omg did the actor for Alfred play as Scar from the lion king? He sounds like him...
Yep
Definitely
12:33 love the lowkey shots
Wow I never stopped to think or ask what dc was the abbreviation for detective comics. Thanks Voss!
The how many good guys stayed that way line is definitely a reference to Harvey Dent.
We must have the same mindset because I am literally watching that right now no way😂🤔😶
I was eagerly waiting for this.
yay something to watch
Well done
I was looking for this video yday and you did it today maddness
Awesome work. surprised there was no mention of the card when the fight club scene fight ends and Bruce hands the bartender a Joker card (hence why the bartender gives him a concerned look before walking away), my theory is that is how Bruce got into this underground fight club but there are quite a few nods to the joker via card in the movie. It's a fast glimpse so be quick. :)
Very interesting find, thanks!

11:05 Erik did you just term what Jared did on the Suicide Squad set ?😂 “Lex somehow Leto’s a jar of granny’s peach piss on the desk” 🤣🤣
Jokers favourite bath-house, Ace chemicals 😂 I like it
Man, I'm really gonna miss Ben Affleck as the Bat. I really wish he got his due with his own stand alone movie
Nice
The thing about martha scene is quite lovely and emotional. You see bruce is an orphan who lost his mother and father. He for 18 months thought that Superman is a threat to this world. But when the time came to kill him. He heard the name Martha and that made him realise that this Alien also has a mother who is going to die. That's what snaps bruce out of his rage. He realises that he cannot let another boys mother die. So he went and helped Superman. I don’t understand why people make fun of this scene. It’s about mother. Who Won't try to save his mother the person who hugged us when we were sad, scared, lost all hope, cry. It is mother. Zack is a genius who filled this scene with soo much love. Bruce just realised how much of a human Superman is❤️❤️❤️
I also thought that the horses may be a reference to batman riding a horse at the end of the dark knight returns, which was Snyder's main influence for the film. I may be grasping at straws there but who knows.
I liked the first 2/3 of this movie a lot
"caves in wayne manor" holy fookin shit lex isnt messing around straight down to business!
with the lines (streams or tire marks I cant tell) that loop the bottom of the Omega symbol it makes it form the symbol of Fate hinting towards Dr Fate but also that Darkside's invasion is part of batman's Fate
I like how in the ultimate version, Batman’s brutalism is reduced when it comes to possible deaths of criminals except for the scene when he flings a box at a criminal
8:28 YES you do Erik, as I’ve said before 👏🏽
This is great
This movie is amazing. So underated and criticized.
Favorite line: mountain ghost dad lol 😅
I don’t think a single person even knew their mothers had the same name 🤷🏾♂️ why do people diss that so much
Maybe that is the reason why they diss it. Just like Batman, they're finding out at that point and are too surprised so they didn't think about the actual intention.
I did get it the first time I saw it and maybe because I realized watching it halfway that their mother's have the same name. I hope people actually understand the intention. Just my opinion.
6:33 I DID CATCH THE SOUNDS OF THE WORLD ENGINE AND ALL OF THE OTHERS AND IM GLAD I DID BECAUSE IT SOUNDS AWESOME!!!
