    This video teaches how to sign BUT in American Sign Language for beginner learners. Not as straightforward as you'd think! Here are a few different signs that might be used in place of English "but" -- you might use the generic BUT/DIFFERENT sign, the lexicalized fingerspelling version of BUT as in "however...", or the WRONG handshape sign at the chin to indicate something went unplanned.

    I knew only 1 of these 4 alternatives! The fact that some can be used only in certain contexts underscores that you often cannot translate directly from one language to another.

    Awesome, fun learning the same signs for different words, depending on context. Seems to be alot, "stay," with one hand and the word " that."

    I love your videos! You always take your time, show how the sign looks from front and side and then the review. Much appreciated!

    You’re a wonderful teacher and definitely helps learning different ways of saying 1 word multiple ways or in different context. Showing the front and side view, the overhead voice of exactly what’s going on and the slow motion is wonderful and makes learning ASL more understandable and also confident knowing I’m learning the correct ways. Having an on the go ASL app is great, but I’ve learned I’ve learned something’s incorrectly, or they’re too fast even with slow motion option so I cannot see the hand movement. Thanks so much!

    I love going back to these videos to learn more receptivity. This time I learned the words often, translates, and that the word "However" is exactly the same as But, with the two index fingers. ❤

    The first one and finger spelling were the only ones my teacher taught us years ago. Maybe I would have learned the rest if I had continued the other levels of ASL.
    Thanks for sharing.👍

    What about a "hmm" like one does to give a little time to think or consider options? Would tapping on the chin and showing a face of concentration work, or maybe there is a sign for I'm thinking without an explicit "I'm thinking", more conversational

    Thank you! I've seen that fourth sign before. It looked kinda like "wrong", but clearly wasn't, and when I asked and was told it meant "but" I was like... 0_o "I know what but looks like. That wasn't it." BUT I was mistaken.

    I like that new review page you put in! Makes it look more professional. But seriously, my brother heard the video say “but” over and over again until he came over to see, thinking it was “butt.”

    How would you signs but if you wanna say "but" as an exception for example "I like all insects but mosquitoes"

    • @ASLMeredith
      @ASLMeredith  2 года назад +1

      Great question! That use of "but" in English really means the concept "except" -- talking about an exception. So you can use the sign for EXCEPT! Here's a video showing it: ruclips.net/video/BItTZ47uio4/видео.html
