    You are by far my favourite ASL teacher on RUclips! I'm hearing and I don't even know anyone who's deaf personally, but I've always been interested in sign language. So I decided it's just the right time to start learning it, who knows, maybe I'll need it one day. Your explanations are very clear, I immediately memorize what you show. Thank you!

    It helps me learn when you do similar signs. Mentally I group them together and then can remember them much easier. Thanks for doing these videos!

    My daughters use some signs at their daycare. Our 1.5 year old still doesn’t vocally speak. I noticed her doing something with her hands whenever I said the word “clean”. I had a suspicion it was the sign, and here I am. Sure enough. After watching your clip, I have subbed and watched quite a few. You do a great job. I am even more impressed with your use of facial expressions. Such a talent.

    I'm new to the channel. I'm curious if you have videos that would help me with my job at the airport? I would love to be able to sign with passengers. "Do you have a computer in your bag"
    "Can you take your shoes off"
    I am meeting more and more people who sign and I want to learn as much as I can

    what is the difference between the signs for dessert and divorce?

    • @ASLMeredith
      @ASLMeredith  4 года назад +4

      DESSERT has the fingers tap together. DIVORCE uses a different movement - the fingers start together, and then move apart. One movement.

    Hi Meredith, I love your videos! They're so clear and helpful. One thing that confuses me in ASL is why some signs like the noun "teacher" is done once, where as the verb "teach" is done twice. On the other hand, the noun "chair" is done twice, but the verb "sit" is done once.

    • @ASLMeredith
      @ASLMeredith  2 года назад +2

      Hi Catherine, great question! You're very observant! These are indeed grammatical patterns in ASL that apply to many words. You're confounding two different patterns though, so let me clarify (buckle in! here we go...): Many ASL words follow a noun-verb pattern of 2-movements vs 1-movement. That's like the CHAIR example you give, where CHAIR is a double-movement of the action SIT. The same can be seen in other sign pairs like PHONE/CALL, TRAIN/GO-BY-TRAIN, FOOD/EAT, BOOK/OPEN-BOOK, SCISSORS/CUT, DOOR/OPEN-DOOR, and so on. This is a pattern -- it is not a rule; while many ASL nouns and verbs follow this pattern, it's not the case that all verbs and nouns work this way. (This is normal of language. For example, English, too, has many general patterns (or even 'rules') that have plenty of of exceptions!) Now, with that in mind, let's look at TEACH and TEACHER. The verb "to teach" can be signed with *either* a single or double movement. Generally, "to teach" would be a single movement, actually, and a double movement connotes more the process of teaching -- "teaching" (which, in essence, is actually a noun! (In English, this would be a 'gerund' -- you can look it up; it's when a verb functions as a noun.). So TEACHING/TEACH can sort of also be thought of as following the noun-verb pattern discussed above, too. BUT in any event, you may see it signed with a single or double movement. Then TEACHER is a noun, of course, and it follows the pattern of other person-marker signs that use the AGENT suffix. The two flat hands, facing one another, movement downward indicate a PERSON, and many roles/professions are indicated by adding that as a suffix to a sign. So TEACH+PERSON becomes TEACHER. Similarly, LEARN+PERSON becomes STUDENT, ART+PERSON becomes ARTIST, ENGINEERING+PERSON becomes ENGINEER, and SCIENCE+PERSON becomes SCIENTIST. So this is a different type of pattern. I hope this helped clarify! Great queston; I may cover this in an upcoming email newsletter and/or RUclips video :) thanks for asking!
