I was born and raised in Georgia, and I love boiled peanuts. So I grew them for the first time last year, although my family always grew them. I'm growing them again this year. Just be aware that we generally pick the variety of peanuts to grow based on what you plan to do with them, e.g. roasting versus boiling. They were truly a breeze to grow. I did not pre-sprout them and grew them in pure compost in a raised bed. Not fussy at all. I'm in Maryland zone 7b. I grew Red Valencia peanuts. You're going to love doing this!!!
I’m in Tucson and I grew peanuts from migardener last year. It was a great success in my extremely dry climate. I saved seeds and I already planted a birdie bed of peanuts under my eggplants this year.
I am so excited to watch you grow peanuts! They really are the most fun to watch grow and go to sleep at night. I am so looking forward to the first time you see them close their leaves at night.
I'm in Dothan Alabama the Peanut Capitol of the World! Red clay soil, high humidity and long hot summers. Farmers rotate planting peanuts with planting cotton here
Then I am sure you are familiar with the boll weevil statue in Enterprise, Al. .......thanks to that little critter the farmers diversified from cotton to peanuts.
I grow peanuts every year by accident (sort of). I put peanuts out for the blue jays and crows and they love to hide the nuts in the garden. Always fun to find them.
When I was a school kid, we had community vegetable garden in the schoolyard. We mostly grew dill, parsley, carrots, beets, and potatoes, but some of us, including me, were insane and tried growing the funky things, including peanuts. We tried a few years and only succeeded once. They were nice and very tender, much better than the awful ones sold in Soviet stores. I think you will have much better success though. Where I grew up, we had a very short growing season (sometimes there was snow in June) and extreme temperature variations between seasons - down to minus 52 C in the winter and up to plus 48 C in the summer, with 90% humidity. I wish you the best of luck with your peanuts and look forward to seeing you harvesting them when they grow :)
Probably about 10 years ago I bought a pack from Baker Creek seeds and planted them. At the time I knew nothing about peanuts, but later in the season I pulled up the plants and had peanuts! Haven't planted them since, but I am interested. to do so. Virginia, zone 7.
I tried growing peanuts once, many years ago (PA zone 6). I just sowed them in my ordinary garden soil, no special treatment. My plants produced a bumper crop of peanuts, but the cold weather set in too soon, and most of them were immature. If I were to try them again, I would start them indoors. It was fascinating to see how they grow.
I WILL be following this Very Closely. I've wanted to grow peanuts for a while now, but being in a short season area I didn't think it was remotely possible. Definitely checking out her videos
This Paula Wells tried growing peanuts in the Pacific Northwest last year. We had an unusually hot and dry summer last year but still not enough to get a good harvest. Good luck and can’t wait to see how you and Paula do.
Just had to tell you, I am growing peanuts for the first time here in N California. Not because I wanted to but because we have squirrels and apparently someone gave them peanuts and they buried them on our property. I dont have the heart to kill them (the peanuts) so I have 6 plants in my greenhouse and 3 in my garden area. Very interesting plant and I look forward to your videos! Thx
Just got some peanuts and started germinating today, but to late in the season for where I live in Canada for an outdoor harvest, but I will try a couple in pots and bring in over the winter. Start the rest next year is the plan.
I grew peanuts from Baker Creek in raised last couple years, the Fastigiata Pin Striped, in zone 9b Sacramento. They grew well and the peanut pods were huge . The peanut itself has purple stripes and very sweet. The only experience I would add to your planting tips is spacing. They need a lot of space so they can extend out the branches and touch the soil to form peanuts, 8 inch spacing might be too close, especially the rows by the edges of your raised bed.
Good luck Brian. I bought some seed peanuts once and was going to give it a try, I misplaced the seeds and by the time I found them it was too late to plant them. I live in a short growing season but I was still going to give it a shot. Maybe I’ll try again next year because it sure would be fun to grow them and my husband LOVES peanuts. 🌸💚🙃
My first year growing peanuts and I only have three plants. Sprouted indoors and planted outdoors about 04.01.22. Sprouted quickly, but slow-growing now, but look healthy. Waiting for the first blooms. In Metro Atlanta.
Great video! Thank you for letting me know about the Valencia variety. Our growing season is so short. A melon video would be incredibly helpful as well. 🍈
I literally decided to grow peanuts yesterday, I put raw peanuts from the store in moist paper towels last night to sprout. I live in Colorado at 7000ft, it gets hot during the summer but it's very dry here and cooler at night. the growing season is basically June through mid Sept which may not be long enough/ we'll see.
I grew peanuts a couple of years ago. I did it in a pot. Peanuts need space. I had a handful of peanuts from one plant. It is really cool to watch the flower. At first it's a regular flower then the center starts growing into a needle like thing and then it falls into the ground.
We live in Nevada, hot and dry. Our experiance with peanuts came from feeding our ground squirls (this may be a way for you to plant your Peanuts) They got them and then hid them away for the winter the next spring our neighbors were wonderiing about the plants growing in their yards . Pulled up a couple and sure enough there were the peanuts growing. Going to try to do the planting in the right way some time.
Cool intro to starting to setup growing peanuts. I was trying to grow dragon fruit and frost caused them to die. Then I noticed some strange plant with smooth round leaves. It was a peanut plant. Later two more pots have peanut plants growing. Some crazy squirrel planted them and forgot. Now I have 3 pots with peanut plants in New York City heat weather.
We moved from a zone 4-5 to a 7a. Trying peanuts for the first time. I planted them in buckets. Kind of a try it for grins and giggles. :) Will see what happens.
Blue Jays planted peanuts all over my yard this year, so I am just letting them go. I may not be successfull because our temp ranges are more extreme, but I am willing to give it a shot.
I planted spanish peanuts for the summer crop in my raised bed. Looking forward to watching them grow and harvesting home grown peanuts! I'm not sure if I missed it, did you use any inoculant? I'm not sure if peanuts really need it or not, but I read that they should be inoculated if you have not grown them before. They are a legume, but require a different inoculant than beans and peas. Maybe they are naturally inoculated being that they grow underground?
Good idea about the fleece! I’m growing peanuts for the first time and the blue jays and the squirrels got all but one of my first planting🙄- lesson learned!
I already have a peanut / squirrel problem in my garden. My neighbor feeds the neighborhood squirrels and they come and plant their peanuts in my garden. So far none of their peanuts have sprouted. Maybe they need to view your video :)
I grew TN Red Valencia last year and had great success. Basically, I planted them, kept them weeded until the plants were big enough and harvested about 4 months later. Best boiled peanuts ever! I forgot to order more seed this year, but next year.... Brian, Try getting your seed peanuts from Southern Exposure Seed Exchange. They have a lot of varieties!
I see those corner pipe let you extend the pipe upward to easily be able to put bird netting all around the bed so no animals get to whatever your growing. This looks like a good option for me having groundhog issues. And birds eating my stuff
we grew peanuts once when i was a kid and they were so cool. but i have no memory of ever harvesting them. i plan to grow them next year after i expand my garde.
Grew up in Visalia, CA and my great uncle grew peanuts! I love eating them raw! So very excited to watch your process!! Might have to try some too! 🥜🥜🥜🥜🥜🥜🥜
the nursery i frequent had peanut plants this year so i bought one. i'm growing it in a deep container pot like my potatoes. we'll see how it goes! I already had the shrimp/crab and kelp fertilizer so added that when i transplanted it!
One year I bought peanut hay from a local farmer to use for mulch. Well you probably guessed that I ended up with peanuts sprouting all over my garden. I had Sandy loam soil and the peanuts sprouted like crazy!
Can't wait to see how peanuts grow and fingers crossed you can get the time lapse! Unfortunately it's far too cold in the UK (even in the heat of summer) to grow peanuts were lucky if it regularly hits 28°C (82°F I think)

Just a note about my experience with Grassroots. I ordered a fabric container from them. At no point did they provide the shipping cost until after the order placed. It was more than the cost of the container. They were great about processing the cancelation and refunding my money. I was bummed but just could not afford to spend that much at that moment.
Is it safe to assume that you will not be using a mulch cover on the soil? I would assume that would impede the stems hitting the ground. A time-lapse video would be awesome!
I live in zone 5b/6a and love to grow peanuts, forgot this year, however last year I did well (for me), but a squirrel stole them, lol…. Maybe next year? Under cover 100%.
Ooh! I've been checking the Asian veggie booth at our Farmer's Market. They don't have raw peanuts yet - but I'll definitely buy some. I've been wanting to try peanuts for awhile. Now you've inspired me (the same farmers also sell fresh sugar cane - I want to try that too)! Oh, I left you a message on IG about my experience with my Timelapse PlantCam. It's definitely do-able - although I never uploaded my videos to YT!
The squirrels have been leaving peanuts all in my yard, some have germinated with the shell on them, I never thought about growing peanuts I may try it some day.
Great to know. I was always wondering how I could grow them. I live in a dry climate. I am going to try it. I hope I win. I have a squirrel infestation this year. I am trying the raised bed product you are showing. By the way, what's the great reveal???
xlnt! i'll be a couple of days behind you in almost identical conditions, so it will be invaluable to compare what's happening here with what's going on there. i tried peanuts last year with seeds from a catalog and they did very well for a while then suddenly died with a sparse harvest. this time around i will use raw peanuts from winco and/or an organic market.
I'd love to try growing peanuts because I love peanut butter . Where can I get a few seeds. Can I grow them from raw peanuts sold at the supermarket ? Zone 9A Florida.
5 species of peanuts. Only the Virginia (larger seeds) and runner (smaller seeds) genus give peanuts seeds. The Virginia genus has 11 current-industrial use - while there are 16 out of former production. The runner genus has 18 current-industrial-use - while there are 19 out of former production.
