- Curious about growing peanuts at home? Many folks are surprised to learn that peanuts CAN successfully be grown in more Northern climates. Today I share how I grow peanuts in my own Zone 6, Ohio garden- as well as a few things I'll be changing to improve my crop for next year. Growing peanuts at home is surprisingly easy & rewarding! I remember years ago, (in central Ohio) I was in the third grade, I ask my dad if I could grow peanuts, so he got some and we planted them in the spring and sure enough in the fall we dug some. When my teacher found out she wanted me to plant some in the classroom, so everyone could see want kind of plant They were. It was a wonderful experience my dad gave me that I will never forget even at the age of 72.

Schronce's Black do amazeballz in the Cincinnati area. Try to plant by first week of June. No need to start indoors. We direct sow last week of May/ first week of June. Harvest when tops are frost killed in October. They grow just fine in clay as long as there's plenty of water. Just difficult to dig/harvest

if you soak the peanut a few hours, you don't need a heat mat. they'll germinate in a few days.

I have just found your channel and really enjoy the way you lay everything out. My dad used to grow peanuts every few years as he had room when I was younger. I'm in south east ohio. My parents never roasted them, ate them raw which always tasted weird to me. Now that I am starting my own family we are getting back to homesteading and your videos are so helpful in doing better with the crops most do grow in ohio

A Vole! How hysterical! I rewound it several times to make out what critter that was visiting your garden. 😂 I always here noises and wonder if a snake, rodent or really big bug is nearby when gardening in the warmer weather. Great to catch it on video!

Charlie Hoos - I did the same! A plump vole! I caught (and released) one once in the melting snow when their tunnels were exposed & it had the densest most velvety fur I’d ever beheld 😊

That's a very informational video about growing peanuts, although I never grew that before and I only bought raw peanuts for cooking at Chinese stores. Now I have strong desire to plan to grow peanuts next April. Thank you for your inspiration. 😉

I definitely want to try growing some! As a kid I remember along the fence line in our back yard, there were volunteer peanut plants, grown from the peanuts squirrels left. I thought it was super cool. At the time, I didn't know much about gardening so never realized that peanuts could just grow like that.
I'm in eastern Washington state, zone 7 looks like. Hopefully I can do this too.
Oh that's fun! I've heard from a few other folks saying that their squirrels planted peanuts for them too 😆. As far as growing them successfully, I'm sure your season is long enough- I think the biggest factor will be the amount of heat you get during your summers, as peanuts like warm weather. I'm guessing being in Eastern Washington though, you should be just fine!
i grew peanuts when i was a kid one time...had a nice harvest of them...my dad had a piece of land outside of east Dayton Ohio where we lived, and we would go there and raise a garden...great memories...

after 4 months, mine are still green and still producing flowers. flowers started about 3 months ago.

I’m just received 3 American varieties of seeds from Urban Farmer and I can’t wait to start them germinating this weekend. I live in zone 9b SoCal, but my soil is still in the Low to mid 50’s. By the time they are ready to transplant out I’m sure the soil will be warm enough to grow some nice peanuts. I sure would like to find some of those super special cool striped peanuts from Ecuador or the Black skinned variety… I guess there are some very yummy & tasty varieties of peanuts out there, just difficult to find. 2 weeks ago I didn’t know I could grow peanuts, so I’m super stoked as I love watching Ice Hockey and eating salty salty roasted peanuts & drinking beer. This will be fun!

I hope you do! They can be grown in containers as well- the trick is just getting a container that's wide enough so they can spread out & put their pegs down.

I'm trying peanuts this year (in 9b, SC). First time growing them, but I have high hopes! I love peanuts, it will be fabulous if I can grow them successfully.

I am aware of a peanut grower here in Ontario, they market them locally, they have a good product (I have tried them).
@@pseudopetrus I am in Southern Ontario as well. I believe Valencia is the best variety to try here. It has a shorter growing season and can tolerate cooler temps than other varieties. OSC seeds carries the seeds

Grandma used to boil them for granddaddy. Absolutely discussing, like boiled okra ( brb - gagging ). I do, however, enjoy the raw peanuts, roasted and salted, and even a can of planters party peanuts from time to time. I tried this year, to start peanuts from seed (nut?), but they all just rotted in the soil. I'll try again in a couple of months. ( near Lancaster Pa - zone 6b)
I'm just not a fan of boiling much of anything! I hope you haver better luck with the peanuts next time!
Hello Jenna..great video, I'm in zone 2B, planning to grow peanuts next year for the first time. I spend at least $10 a week on peanuts feeding the hungry northern birds here all year round! LOL! Will have the room since I'm moving my potatoes into grow bags next year. Great tutorial video as always! I'll let you know how they turn out...I'm excited to give it a go! I'm intrigued by the "hardy, short season" description and it seems like it might be a good option as far north as you are!

Our local Wild Birds Unlimited in Sandusky has sourced peanuts from Ashland so they definitely do grow in zone 6. And our squirrels like to bury them in our yard. They sprout but never get far enough along to produce.
How cool- I didn't realize they were being grown on a commercial scale in Ashland!

I bought those 3 varieties from SESE last year, I'm try and grow a few of them. What I'm going to focus on is the type of soil peanuts prefer; sandy loam like you said but I read they prefer slight acidic soil. I'm going to add a bit of sulfur. Wish me luck!
You are correct- Peanuts grow best in slightly acidic soils with a pH of 6.0 to 6.5, but a range of 5.5 to 7.0 is acceptable. I believe the soil in the bed I was growing in falls right around 7.0. Best of luck!

I've been teaching a gardening class to developmentally delayed kids and I couldn't figure out how the flowers could be on top, and the fruits underground. What a fascinating plant! One question. When we were growing new vegetables from old, such as celery stalk bottoms, I told the kids to be sure not to cook the food first. I'm wondering if dehydration would make the seeds "unviable" for replanting. Have you tried it? Do you know?
Peanuts really are fascinating! Regarding the viable seed- if the seed is dried in the dehydrator with heat it will quickly lose its viability. If you dry with 'unheated air' (such as a fan blowing on them or just let them air dry), those will remain viable.
So want to grow them!! Im zone 6b-7 since the maps cant agree…. Im gonna try one day

Wow! DIdn't know there was a cold climate peanut. Maybe too wet here at harvest time tho and as you know I have bunnies a'plenty. Thinking of growing something for the local food bank and I might have to try these. Potatoes and turtle beans are a bit boring for that purpose.

You didn't mention which variety was your favorite or if one worked better for you than another. I'm in zone 6 KY and have tried the valencia variety. I bought a single plant at the nursery and experiented with it last year. I got 2 nuts for seed and planted those this year. Again enough for the seed but not enough to eat. I will put them in better soil next year and see what happens.
Shoot- I should have done that! I got ZERO production on the Texas Red & White. The Schronce's Deep Black and Tennessee Red were about even in terms of production. I liked the flavor of the Tennessee Red a little better. I did just notice on Southern Exposure site they mention that Tennessee Red is "easy to grow even without hilling" which explains why I had success with it!
I am thrilled to have run across your channel. I'm in Cleveland. Question about the peanut plants. How big to the plants themselves get? Are the comparable to potato plants in size? I think my kids would get a kick out of growing them this year.
Hi Nikole- my kids definitely enjoyed seeing them grow! The plants themselves are shorter and more low-growing than potato plants- about 12-18" tall and maybe 18-32" wide at maturity (it depends a bit on which variety you're growing and how fertile your soil is).

I'm growing peanuts for the first time. Using two 10 gallon grow bags. I may have started my seeds too early bc my seedlings are still quite short but already flowering so wanted to transplant them before the pegs go down. I made a wire cage for each grow bag and added crab and lobster meal to the soil.
Will the dehydrated peanuts be viable to sprout next spring or does that ruin them for planting?

Hi Jen, it's Ken , I have loved gardening sense I was old enough to plant my first tomato plant , im now 71 and the wife and I still try to grow about an acre of raised bed garden plus growing giant pumpkins , each year seems to get a little bit harder to keep up with it , and the wife and I grow a little bit slower each year ... lol !!! .... anyhow love your approach to gardening, so keep up the good work ..... Those look like some interesting peanut varieties, did they taste different than 'normal' peanuts?
They did actually! The flavor was stronger than peanuts I typically get from the grocery.

Hi Nina- I dried them at around 115° F for approx. 4 hours. It'll depend somewhat on their moisture content after harvesting, so I would recommend checking on them every couple of hours.

What fertilizer would u recomand for peanuts

Ive tried to do research but I cant find any info on it. Can you grow garlic after peanuts?

You didnt happen to weigh them? In shell or shelled? Is that a 4×8 bed? Im curios how the yield compares in the north, to southern conventional farms that usually get about 0.1 pounds per square foot (i think shelled) which is very good compared to most other crops considering the energy/caloric density of peanuts. So like 3.2 pounds in a 4'×8'.

I like them raw; sort of chewy. I had never had raw peanuts until I ordered a bag to use for seed, and ended up eating most of them.
To each their own! They are definitely sort of chewy 😄
@@GrowfullywithJenna At least they're not boiled! I had an issue with something digging them up in my grow room. Must have been a mouse. Took bait out of the traps without setting them off. I finally encouraged my cat and her rambunctious kitten to spend time out there. The kitten is worse than the mouse!

I can grow peanuts in zone 3b which has nothing to do with growing any plant. It's all how you grow.

Can you plant your peanuts, the ones you grew??
Great question, Brenda! I've not done this, so I consulted the book 'Seed to Seed' (a great reference to have on hand if you're interested in saving your own seed). To save seed peanuts you harvest once the plants start to yellow and then cure (or thoroughly dry) the peanuts (pod & all). Peanut seed will remain viable for up to 4 years if stored at 35F and 5% moisture.

Where in Ohio are you? I am North West Ohio. I don't believe we are zone 6. I believe we are zone 5. Isn't zone 6 in southern Ohio?
Midwestern Ohio. Most of Ohio changed to Zone 6 some years back (2012- planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/) when the USDA updated their zone maps- you can check yours by typing in your zip code here: garden.org/nga/zipzone/
