What a great idea- I'm going to be growing some peanuts in containers as a project with my kids this year after watching this. Thanks for sharing this information!
I planted one peanut at the end of my 4x8 raised bed back in June after i harvested my spring crop and was planting my summer crop. I found the peanut in my yard, coutesy of the neighborhood peanut delivery squirrel who's always leaving peanuts everywhere. Thought I'd throw it in to see what it does. That one single peanut has grown to take over half of my raised bed. Probably over 250 pegs or more by a rough count and rough multiplication. It's continually growing and putting out new flowers.
Hey, that peanut you uncovered was wearing a monocle! So these remind me a lot of potatoes; when they yellow up and start to die back, it's time to harvest.
All I did was soak a whole bag of raw peanuts overnight in a ziplock bag (no salt added to the soak) to make boiled peanuts and took the ones that had fallen out of the shells and stuck them in dirt, 3 out of the 5 I stuck in the dirt are now plants that just started to flower today 2 1/2 weeks later
Someone threw a peanut in the shell into my friends flower pot. The nuts busted through the shell and began to sprout, and made their way to the soil. Now the peanut shell is on the tip top of the peanut plant as he left it there and the plant is about 4 inches tall.
Thanks for that video I know have a idea what to do. When I got my seeds in the mail and they were peanuts in the shell I was beyond confused. I am going to attempt to grow them in North Dakota so it’s more of a experiment if I can grow them up north. I believe I am going to have to put a screen over ten to protect them from the birds.
Well to really, really amaze you, what about cashews???!!!! They grow in apple trees! Google or RUclips that one!!! Your jaw will be on the ground!!! Mine was! And they almost impossible to get out of their shell, which is partly why they are expensive. It is mostly done by hand. There is no machine that can do it.
I grew peanuts once before years ago. I don't normally like raw peanuts, at least the commercial chemically grown ones, but my raw peanuts, grown on humus were exceptionally delicious. Is there some reason that you said not to eat them raw? I am growing them this year and they are doing very well, and I was planning to eat most of them raw. Peanuts fold their leaves at night, abseil and then dig themselves in, and the flowers are unreal in their brightness - an amazing plant, the old Goober Bean!!
Thanks for the info! My kiddos got to pick their own seeds this year and my son picked peanuts as one of his. I'm considering filling a plastic kiddie pool with soil and letting his peanuts do their thing in there. It's definitely wide enough, is about 6 to 8 inches deep enough?
@@ianjimenez9769 Got it covered 😊. I'm not new to gardening in general, just peanuts. I like to do a little research to make sure the new things I'm trying have what they need. I wasn't sure how deep reaching their roots were. But we got them planted this past week. Fingers crossed, my little dude is so excited to try and share them.
Help what do I do with my peanuts after harvesting them I've just put them in the fridge for now but I don't know what to do with them how to cure them or do I roast them first I'm not sure plz help...
@@BestBudsGardeningdetailed info on curing, preparing for consumption and storing would be helpful. You jist said 'be sure to dry and cure properly' which isnt very helpful 😅
I'm not 100% sure I understand your question. Do you mean make the soil higher so the pegs reach the soil easier? NO! You won't want to bury any part of the plant under more soil.
The job of a flower it to make seeds! But with peanuts the process is very unusual! The seeds grow under ground! Not in or near the flower. Are there any other plants like this that you know of??? Thanks
Hello Julie😊 it's good I came across your channel. Let's grow together. My name is Julie too and I planted peanuts in containers yesterday though mine were big to provide space for pegging.
Well, you're only going to be able to do one in a 5 gallon bucket, because it doesn't have much surface room for the way the plants like to spread. Think "wide", not "deep". Go get a kiddie pool at the dollar store, drill some holes for drainage, and put 10 in there.
In great conditions, each plant will produce 25-50 peanuts. In less than great conditions, 15-25 peanuts. Bigger plants will equal more peanuts. Let me know how it goes.
If they're raw... you sure CAN!! Usually, in my supermarket, I cannot find raw peanuts. Everything is in a package, and roasted/salted. So, I guess I said that, thinking of my own situation.
Doesn't seem like much of a harvest for that big of a pot. Doesn't seem worth it in my opinion... Rather use that space for potatoes... All that soil and they only use a few inches down and only produce a few peanuts? The cost of the soil and pot etc is more expensive then buying some.... Peanuts are NOT expensive
If you live in a warm area, like KS, you won't have much luck growing potatoes in pots. I think I mentioned in the video, peanuts don't need a very deep space, and if you already have the pot, and a local compost site, the cost is nothing. Homegrown peanuts have about 10 times more "peanut-y" flavor than their stale, store-bought cousins. Kind of the same reason people choose to grow sweet corn, which takes a whole lot of space, and only provides one ear per 2 square feet. It just tastes better. Whatever you decide to grow, I hope it turns out well. Happy gardening.
I try to stay away from telling people how to cure, store, or preserve their food. If someone did it improperly and got sick, I'd feel responsible. And, peanuts can harbor some pretty nasty mold if not cured properly. So... I just stick to "how to GROW it."

THE BEST video of how to grow peanuts I've seen. I have watched so many that leave out needed info ,thanks.
You explained this PERFECTLY. This was so helpful! I love it!
Glad you liked it!!
This was the most pleasant video I have ever heard. Your voice was sweet and almost like you were telling us a story. I enjoyed this video very much.
Thank you so much. I hope you check out my other gardening videos.
I definitely will check out your other videos. Thank you.
Same here, excellent presentation!
Great info video.
Not a lot of peanuts for 1 container.
Must need about 20 of them to make a full jar of PB.
Yes you do. :) But only one or 2 for some nice chocolate covered treats.
Hey, that peanut you uncovered was wearing a monocle! So these remind me a lot of potatoes; when they yellow up and start to die back, it's time to harvest.
I think it's absolutely adorable how my peanuts close their leaves and go to sleep once my grow lights turn off.
They are amazing plants!
❤you sound so soothing..I think you would be a great storybook reader for children's book or anything really!! Thanks for sharing!❤

Awesome, thank you!
Thanks! This really helped!
Great! Thank you!
Could I know what kind of compost we need to ensure the growth? Thank you.
I usually just get mine from the compost site.

It is possible for raw peanuts to be contaminated with mold called Aspergillus flavus.
You can bake them

That's minimum, but I think that will be ok. Try for the 8 inch depth.
@@BestBudsGardening thank you so much for the reply. I'm fairly sure I can make it at least 8. 😊

And leave the plug OUT!!!
Bought a packet of seeds from the seed store, one germinated... Bought a bag from the grocery store, 90% germinated and cost about 100x less 😂
As long as they're not roasted and salted, you'll be fine!
Nice video, Is a problem if it has a Lot of sun but no direc one, Is in a Green house, can it grow there?
This plant needs at least 6 hours of sunlight per day. You should be able to grow in a greenhouse.

Just let them dry. A week or two should be enough.

The plants go into my compost pile.

Very informative , I guess its late to try it now right , since winter is coming . Which is the best month to start pls , I live in warm country

Sounds great!
New to growing peanuts, and I’m interested to know if I can grow multiple plants in, say, a 5 gallon bucket, or should I limit I to one?
Well, you're only going to be able to do one in a 5 gallon bucket, because it doesn't have much surface room for the way the plants like to spread. Think "wide", not "deep". Go get a kiddie pool at the dollar store, drill some holes for drainage, and put 10 in there.
Why not eat them raw? Cured? Wow!! I really need to learn about peanuts.
Peanuts aren't usually eaten raw in the United States.
How many peanuts does each plant produce normally?
In great conditions, each plant will produce 25-50 peanuts. In less than great conditions, 15-25 peanuts. Bigger plants will equal more peanuts. Let me know how it goes.
I done the damp paper towel method in a bag and the paper towel became soggy and so did the peanuts, did i do it right?
Well, if the peanuts become soggy... the paper towel might have been a little too wet.
Also... were you using viable "peanut Seed"?
Is it ok to plant it in the ground? Also, will it grow if its always sunny?
Perfectly fine to grow in the ground. They love sunshine!
So why can i not use raw peanuts from supermarket ?
If they're raw... you sure CAN!! Usually, in my supermarket, I cannot find raw peanuts. Everything is in a package, and roasted/salted. So, I guess I said that, thinking of my own situation.
Can you put them into organic soil?
Absolutely.
Do I need to let the peanuts dry if I'm going to boil them?
No. If you dry them first, it will require much more time to boil.
The harvest was from just those 2 peanuts?
Yes. I actually thought the harvest was a little smaller than it should have been.
Hazelnuts please .. from a-z
I have never grown hazelnuts.
Can you grow peanuts indoors?
If your grow lights are strong enough... absolutely!
Ive grown a peanut but when I harvested it i got 28peanuts the others went to rot
Might have watered a little too much.

Why did you not say anything about curing/drying peanuts.

that's not much for 5 months of work :)
Nature did the work. Also, the taste of home grown peanuts is FAR beyond the old, dried out ones you get at the store.
