I think he was actually smart. His job was the stop them he doesn’t know how to fight so he was trying to intimidate them by Lying about the knife being poisoned and with weird moves and then faked his death because they didn’t fall for the intimidation. So this way he failed his mission but at least didn’t actually lose his life. That’s how I see it anyways. (I haven’t watched the movie though)

Yoshihiko: I was already dead anyway. Just resurrected by God's will. Merub: Yoshihiko, you're really..... Yoshihiko: Glad to meet all of you once again. Murasaki, you must seal the sacophagus. After that, let the world be a better place where there's no need for us to be resurrected. (Merub accepted Yoshihiko's impending death) Merub: Leave it to us. Damn, I was dropping man's tears in a supposedly silly comedy.

Rolling only changes the outcome, it doesn't change the past so the poison would still be poison even with a nat 20, unless your DM is an idiot.
